BACKGROUND Hematological tumors are common malignant tumors, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Most patients with hematological malignancies develop sleep disorders that seriously affect their life and health because of acute onset of disease, rapid progression, high recurrence rates, complex treatment methods, and treatment costs.AIM To explore the mediating effect of resilience on fear of disease progression and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies.METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of 100 patients with hematological malignancies, treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinzhou Medical University between August 2022 and August 2023,was conducted.Patients were assessed using a general data survey,a simplified scale for the fear of progression(FoP)of disease,a resilience scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.Statistical analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between various patient characteristics and FoP,resilience, and sleep quality.Spearman’s correlation analysis was used to examine the correlations between mental resilience,FoP,and sleep quality.RESULTS The total FoP score mean value in patients with hematological malignancies was 38.09±5.16;the total resilience score mean value was 40.73±7.04;and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score mean value was 10.72±1.90.FoP,resilience,and sleep quality of the patients were associated with family per capita monthly income and patient education level(P<0.05).Spearman correlation analysis revealed that FoP was negatively correlated with resilience and sleep quality scores(r=-0.560,-0.537,P<0.01),respectively,and resilience was significantly associated with sleep quality scores(r=0.688,P<0.01).Mediation analysis showed that the mediating effect of resilience between FoP and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies was-0.100 and accounted for 50.51%of the total effect. This indicated that FoP directly and indirectly affected sleep quality through the mesomeric effect of resilience.CONCLUSION Resilience is an intermediary variable between FoP and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies.Medical staff should evaluate and follow-up FoP and resilience to implement measures to improve sleep quality. 展开更多

During the rapid spread of COVID-19,first responders are at risk of being exposed to COVID-19 due to their role in providing first aid and responding to an unspecified number of people. This uncertainty can have adverse mental health effects, such as increased anxiety and fear. This study aimed to investigate the degree of association between fear of COVID-19,obsession with COVID-19,and post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)in emergency rescue firefighters. The participants were 150 emergency rescue firefighters working in Region S,Korea. They filled out self-report questionnaires:The data obtained through the Fear of COVID-19 Scale,Obsession with COVID-19 Scale, and Impact of Event Scale-Revised Korean version were subjected to nonparametric statistical analysis using SPSS WIN 25.0.The study found a significant correlation between emergency rescue firefighters’fear of COVID-19,obsession with COVID-19,and PTSD.Fear and obsession with COVID-19 were higher among first responder firefighters who were directly involved in COVID-19-related tasks.Furthermore,a one-point increase in obsession was associated with a 2.837-point increase in PTSD.Based on the results,we found that there is a need for effective control of obsessions and fears among first responder firefighters during COVID-19,and we suggest that there is a need for mental health care for first responder firefighters during the pandemic through the development and support of programs to prevent and mitigate obsessions. 展开更多

In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey model incorporating fear effect and prey refuge are investigated. We delve into the construction of the model and its biological significance, with preliminary results encompassing positivity, boundedness, and persistence. The stability of the system’s boundary and positive equilibrium points is proven by calculating the real part of the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix. At the positive equilibrium point, we demonstrate that the system’s unique positive equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable by using the Dulac criterion. Furthermore, at this equilibrium point, we employ the Implicit Function Theorem to discuss how fear effects and prey refuges influence the population densities of both prey and predators. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to validate the above-mentioned conclusions and explored the impact of Predator-taxis sensitivity αon dynamics of the system. 展开更多

Lumbar curvature may lead to the occurrence of lumbar disc degeneration. Fear of movement may worsen their disc herniation and cause further pain and injury. LDH conditions impact the individuals’ quality of life, to explore the relationship between lumbar curve, muscle strength, fear of movement and functional disability among patients with LDH. Methods: An electronic search was conducted on PubMed, Medline, Science Direct, Springerlink, Google Scholar and a hand search from reference lists was reviewed. Publications were included in human studies, patients 25 - 85 years of age, original studies and published in English language journals from January 2002 to December 2023. Result: In total, 64 articles were researched through the online search engines, and 9 papers were found through manual searches of reference lists. As a result, a total of 11 articles were included for the purpose of this review. The comprehensive analysis revealed the presence of eight cross-sectional studies, two retrospective studies and one experimental study. A minimum of 25 participants and a maximum of 360 participants were included. Ten studies included both genders, only one studies included healthy adults and patients with LDH but these studies didn’t mention gender. Results showed that the factors influencing LDH can be categorized into non-modifiable factors, such as gender, age, height or others. Modifiable factors included increased BMI, DM, smoking, alcohol, employment status, lifestyle and health problems or psychology. Conclusion: Females with greater VASC may be at risk of LDH. The lumbar extensor muscles indicated a localized disc herniation or nerve root pathology in patients with LDH. The fear of movement may lead to psychological consequences and reduce functional disability among patients with LDH. 展开更多

Fear of missing out(FoMO)is a unique term introduced in 2004 to describe a phenomenon observed on social networking sites.FoMO includes two processes;firstly, perception of missing out, followed up with a compulsive behavior to maintain these social connections. We are interested in understanding the complex construct of FoMO and its relations to the need to belong and form stable interpersonal relationships. It is associated with a range of negative life experiences and feelings, due to it being considered a problematic attachment to social media. We have provided a general review of the literature and have summarized the findings in relation to mental health, social functioning, sleep, academic performance and productivity,neuro-developmental disorders, and physical well-being.We have also discussed the treatment options available for FoMo based on cognitive behavior therapy. It imperative that new findings on FoMO are communicated to the clinical community as it has diagnostic implications and could be a confounding variable in those who do not respond to treatment as usual. 展开更多

Isoflurane and sevoflurane are both inhalation anesthetics, but in clinical application, sevoflurane has been considered to be less suitable for long-term anesthesia because of its catabolic compounds and potential nephrotoxicity.Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that these two inhalation anesthetics are similar in hepatorenal toxicity, cost, and long-term anesthetic effect. Moreover, sevoflurane possibly has less cognitive impact on young mice.In this study,C57BL/6 mice aged 8–10 weeks were exposed to 1.2%isoflurane or 2.4%sevoflurane for 6 hours.Cognitive function and memory were examined in young mice using the novel object recognition, contextual fear conditioning, and cued-fear extinction tests.Western blot assay was performed to detect expression levels of D1 dopamine receptor,catechol-O-methyltransferase,phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-3β,and total glycogen synthase kinase-3βin the hippocampus. Our results show that impaired performance was not detected in mice exposed to sevoflurane during the novel object recognition test.Contextual memory impairment in the fear conditioning test was shorter in the sevoflurane group than the isoflurane group.Long-term sevoflurane exposure did not affect memory consolidation, while isoflurane led to memory consolidation and reduced retention.Downregulation of hippocampal D1 dopamine receptors and phosphorylated glycogen synthase kinase-3β/total glycogen synthase kinase-3βand upregulation of catechol-O-methyltransferase may be associated with differing memory performance after exposure to isoflurane or sevoflurane. These results confirm that sevoflurane has less effect on cognitive impairment than isoflurane, which may be related to expression of D1 dopamine receptors and catechol-O-methyltransferase and phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3βin the hippocampus. This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee,Nanjing University,China on November 20,2017(approval No.20171102). 展开更多

In the present experiment, Pavlovian fear conditioning was adopted to study the effects of different early rearing environments on fear conditioning in adult rats. Weaned rats were reared in three manipulable environments (enriched, social and isolated conditions). After 8 weeks, fear conditioning (characterized by percentage of freezing) was observed and analyzed, and rats' weight, locomoter activity and foot-shock sensitivity were operated too. The results showed that: (1) Compared with control group, the level of conditioned fear was significantly increased in enriched group, but significantly decreased in isolated group; (2) Enriched and isolated conditions influenced rat's weight significantly; (3) Different rearing conditions have no effect on locomoter activity and foot-shock sensitivity. These results indicated that early enriched condition could improve the tone-evoked fear conditioning response, while isolated condition impaired the response. 展开更多

Objectives:To describe and compare fear of childbirth and in-labor pain intensity between primiparas and multiparas and explore the association between the amount of actual pain relief and fear of childbirth. Methods:A convenience sampling method was used.A total of 260 women undergoing spontaneous or induced labor, including 97 primiparas and 163 multiparas, were recruited in a large academic specialized hospital in Guangzhou,China, from February 2018 to August 2019.The clinical data of maternal and neonatal were extracted from a structured electronic medical record system.Other demographic information, such as employment and family monthly income, was collected by a questionnaire. The Numeric Rating Scale(NRS)and the Chinese version of the Childbirth Attitude Questionnaire(C-CAQ)were applied to assess maternal in-labor pain intensity and fear of childbirth. The analgesic consumption and the frequency of manual boluses as rescue analgesia were stored and collected from the analgesia pump.Results:Eighty-two(84.5%)primiparas and ninety-nine(60.7%)multiparas received epidural analgesia(P<0.001).In the epidural subgroup, the primiparous average fear of childbirth(36.46±10.93)was higher than that of the multiparas(32.06±10.23)(P¼0.007).However,multiparas reported more intense in-labor pain[8.0(8.0,9.0)vs.8.0(7.0,8.0)],had more successful manual boluses per hour[2.68(1.65,3.85)vs.1.77(0.90,2.47)],more hourly analgesic consumption[23.00(16.00,28.25)vs.17.24(11.52,21.36)mL]and more average analgesic consumption[0.35(0.24,0.45)vs.0.26(0.19,0.35)mL/(h$kg)]than the primiparas(P<0.05).Spearman’s correlation analysis showed that the maximum in-labor pain was weakly positively correlated with fear of childbirth(r¼0.09)(P<0.05),hourly analgesic consumption(r¼0.16)(P<0.01)and average analgesic consumption(r¼0.17)(P<0.05).No statistically significant association was uncovered between analgesic consumption and maternal fear of childbirth. Conclusions:Fear of childbirth is a potential predictor of labor pain intensity.Further study is needed to explore its role and value in pain management during delivery.Parity is not a determinant of pain relief use and should not be a preconceived preference of obstetric care team members to determine the distribution of epidural analgesia, especially when analgesia resources are insufficient. 展开更多

The current corona virus disease 2019 outbreak caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 started in Wuhan,China in December 2019 and has put the world on alert. To safeguard Chinese citizens and to strengthen global health security,China has made great efforts to control the epidemic. Many in the global community have joined China to limit the epidemic. However, discrimination and prejudice driven by fear or misinformation have been flowing globally, superseding evidence and jeopardizing the anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 efforts. We analyze this phenomenon and its underlying causes and suggest practical solutions. 展开更多
