The measurement technique is based on the measurement of relative Fresnel reflected light intensity in a test fiber. Time delayed optical reflected pulses are obtained from a single nanosecond pulse injected at the input due to the difference in lengths of the reference and test fibers. The lengths of the different optical fibers have been measured with this technique with high resolution and fast response time. The measured results show that, the proposed technique has a comparable performance with the well-known length measurement systems.展开更多

The surrounding refractive index from a long distance away can be measured easily by using this sensor system, which operates based on testing the Fresnel reflection intensity from the fiber-sample interface. This system is a simple configuration, which is easy to handle. Experimental results showed that the range of this measurement could reach about 100.8km, and the refractive index sensitivities were from 38.71 dB/RIU to 304.89 dB/RIU in the refractive index (RI) range from 1.3486 to 1.4525.展开更多

The boundary problem was solved using a Fourier series decomposition of the radiation field as a function of the azimuth. For the case of a rough ocean surface, the decomposition was obtained by developing both the Fresnel reflection matrix and the probability distribution of the water facet orientation as Fourier series. The effect of shadowing by ocean surface waves was also considered in the boundary condition. The VRT model can compute the intensity and degree of polarization of the light at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), the ocean surface, and any level of the atmosphere in the ocean-atmosphere system. The results obtained by our model are in good agreement with those computed by Ahmad’s model. The simulated results showed that the shadow effects of wave facets on the intensity and the degree of polarization are negligible except at the ocean surface near the grazing angle, possibly because we did not consider the effect of white caps.展开更多

The F-P sensor is made by two face to face single-mode optical fibers and their surfaces have been polished. Due to the low reflectivity of the fiber surfaces, the sensor is described as low Fresnel Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). The working principle is analyzed using twobeam optical interference approximation. To measure the temperature, a certain temperature sensitive material is filled in the cavity. The slight changes of the reflective intensity which is induced by the refractive index of the material was caught by OTDR. The length of the cavity is obtained by monitoring the interference spectrum which is used for the setting of the sensor static characteristics within the quasi-linear range. Based on our design, a three point sensor array are fabricated and characterized. The experimental results show that with the temperature increasing from -30℃ to 80℃, the reflectivity increase in a good linear manner. The sensitivity was approximate 0.074 dB℃. For the low transmission loss, more sensors can be integrated.展开更多
