Recently, the use of natural immunopotentiators, such as plant extracts,is predicted to offer high disease-prevention potential in aquaculture. However, few reports on the immunomodulatory impacts of olive extract(OE)on teleost are available. Therefore, the effects of dietary intake of triterpene-enriched OE on black sea bream(Acanthopagrus schlegelii)were investigated in this study. Our data showed that total blood cell counts,in vivo content of lysozyme, activities of antiprotease and myeloperoxidase, and contents of IL-4 and IL-6 were significantly up-regulated by dietary intake of triterpene-enriched OE.Additionally, the hampered immune response induced by cadmium exposure was significantly mitigated by the administration of OE as were indicated by partially or completely rescued immune-relating parameters.Furthermore, the expressions of immune-related genes encoding NF-κB inhibitor alpha(IkBα),tumor necrosis factorα(TNFα),cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2),and proto-oncogene protein c-fos(FOS)were found to be significantly up-regulated by the dietary intake of OE.In general, the results suggested that the dietary intake of triterpene-enriched OE has immune enhancing effect in black sea bream.Such effect may be realized by 1)increasing the total counts of diverse blood cells;2)activating nonspecific immune biomolecules;and 3)affecting signaling pathways such as IKK and ERK and subsequently inducing IL-4 and IL-6 biosyntheses. 展开更多

In order to study the mechanism of immunopotentiator, the quantity of T lymphocyte was observed. Total 240 1-day chikens were divided into 3 groups randomly: one contrast group and two groups being drunk immunopotentiator according to the concentration 10 mL·L^-1 and 5 mL·L^-1 lasting for 48 d. The number of T lymphocyte in blood was measured by E-rosette when the chikens were at 12-, 24-, 36-, and 48-day. The results showed that the percent ofT lymphocyte in the trial group was obviously higher than that of the contrast, and the 10 mL·L^-1 group was higher than that of the 5 mL·L^-1 group; the quantity distribution of T lymphocyte in intestinal mucosa lymphoid tissue of 14-day, 21-day chiken was surveyed in the contrast group and the10 mL·L^-1 group with the method of routine histology-slices and ANAE, the results showed that the quantity of T lymphocyte in the 10 mL·L^-1 group was significantly higher than that of the contrast, which indicated that immunopotentiator increased markedly the quantity of T lymphocyte, and the 10 mL·L^-1 group was higher than that of the 5 mL·L^-1 group. 展开更多

To investigate the mechanism of action of Chinese herbal medicine, the immunocells of Harder's glands were observed. The healthy Hy-Line Brown chickens of 12-day-old were divided into three groups randomly. The chickens in group 1 and 2 drank the water with 0.5% and 1% Chinese herbal medicine immunopromoter every day. The chickens in group 3 as control drank pure water. The Harder's glands of the chickens from 0.5% group, 1% group and control group at 24, 36 and 48 d after drinking medicine respectively were made into histological section. And then the histological sections were observed histologically. The results showed that Chinese herbal medicine could increase the quantity of the immunocells in glandular organs conspicuously. Immunopotentiator of Chinese herbal medicine could promote the amount and growth of secreted immunoglobuline and elevate the immune level of the orgamsm, and the effect of 1% group was higher than that of 0.5% group. 展开更多

Bacillus anthracis is the causative agent of anthrax, a bacterial infection with a high mortality rate [1-3]. Although anthrax infection can be cutaneous, gastrointestinal or pulmonary, the pulmonary form is the most deadly [2,3]. Thus, the release of Bacillus anthracis spores that can be inhaled represents a potent bioterrorism threat;the capacity of B. anthracis spores to act as a bioterrorism weapon was demonstrated in 2001, with the intentional infection of 22 persons in the U.S.A. [2,4]. Until recently, the available vaccines were developed to confer protection against cutaneous infection;despite this, these vaccines demonstrated experimental efficacy against pulmonary infection in multiple animal models [1,2]. Nevertheless, there are many limitations for these vaccines to be considered successful and effective vaccine, including the intensity of the required vaccination schedule, the administration route and the presence of local adverse effects experienced after vaccination [1,3,5,6]. To develop more efficient vaccines against pulmonary anthrax, intranasal formulations with adjuvant have been studied. These formulations have advantages because they are easy to administer and because they are expected to induce both systemic and respiratory tract mucosal immune responses. Therefore, the main goal of this review is to compare the different experimental adjuvants used with anthrax antigens and the different approaches regarding the vaccination schedule and consecutive boosters. 展开更多

[Objective ] The study aimed to provide a theoretical basis for the clinical application of collagen peptide from Cyanea nozakii. [ Method] After acute toxicity test on mice, collagen peptide from C. nozakii were given to mice by continuous intragastric administration for 30 d at the doses of 25, 50, 100 mg/kg, and then the phagocytosis of macrophage, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) and serum hemolysin level were determined. [ Result] Collagen peptide from C. nozakii was atoxic or low toxic, and the three immune indices of experimental groups were signifi- canUy higher than those of the control group (treated with same volume of normal saline) at 0.05 or 0.01 level. E Conclusion] Collagen peptide from C. nozakii has a certain immunopotentiation. 展开更多

Objective: To investigate the effect of lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented mustard on immunopotentiating activity Methods: One hundred and fifty nine strains of lactic acid bacteria isolated from traditional Taiwan fermented mustard were evaluated for their immunopotentiating activity on a murine macrophage cell line RAW 264.7.Results: Of the strains, pronounced increases in the levels of nitric oxide(NO), tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 were observed in strains B0040, B0110 and B0145. Among them, strain B0145 had the highest NO and tumor necrosis factor-α generation in RAW 264.7 cells;strains B0040 and B0110 were also superior to that of Lactobacillus casei. These results demonstrated that NO and cytokines were effectively induced when the bacterial stimulants were treated with macrophages. In addition, strains B0040 and B0110 were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, and B0145 as Weissella cibaria using 16 S rDNA analysis. Conclusions: The results implicated selected strains may be regarded as a biological response modifier and had a broad application prospects in exploiting new functional food or as a feed additive. 展开更多

Long-term treatment with Cs-4 or CE at equivalent human doses improved antioxidant status in various tissues, as evidenced by the enhancement of mitochondrial glutathione redox status in the brain, liver, heart, and kidney of mice. Cs-4 or CE treatment also produced an immunomodulatory action, as indicated by the potentiation of Concanavalin A-/lipopolysaccharide-induced proliferation of mouse splenocytes ex vivo. While doubling of the equivalent human doses of Cs-4 and CE did not further enhance their antioxidant or immunopotentiating effects, the combined treatment with Cs-4 and CE at their respective equivalent human doses produced an additive effect, with the extents of stimulation being larger than those produced by Cs-4 or CE alone. The results have demonstrated for the first time that the combined use of Cs-4 and CE can produce an additive effect on both antioxidation and immunopotentiation that cannot otherwise be achieved by increasing the equivalent human doses of Cs-4 or CE alone. 展开更多
