First-in-China Sulphuric Acid Alkylation Unit Passed Technical Appraisal with Its Technology Reaching Internationally Advanced Level

On November 15,2018 the sulfuric acid alkylation(SINOALKY)technology,jointly developed by RIPP,SINOPEC’s Shijiazhuang Refining and Chemical Branch Company,and the Luoyang Engineering Co.Ltd.,had passed the technical appraisal organized by the SINOPEC Science and Technology Division.The experts attending the appraisal meeting have recognized that the said technology,featuring low reaction temperature,low acid consumption and good products distribution,has entirely on a par with the internationally advanced level.The successful commercialization of SINOALKY technology has symbolized that China does possess the first sulfuric acid alkylation unit with fully independent intellectual property right after breaking through foreign technical barriers.

Auxo-endocrinological features in a cohort of internationally adopted children in Italy

Background Internationally adopted children (IAC) can present growth impairment at arrival,which usually recovers over time.Moreover,a major prevalence of precocious puberty has been reported in this group.Methods All IAC referred to a tertiary level hospital in Italy from January 2016 to June 2017,underwent a standardized screening protocol and were prospectively enrolled in the study.The analyses of possible risk factors for growth impairment and precocious puberty were performed.Results Overall,422 children were included (males 59.5%),with median age of 6.5 years (IQR 9.4-3.9),29.9% adopted from Europe,26.8% from Asia,23.9% from Africa and 19.4% from Latin America.Children were in Italy from a median of 75 days (IQR 137.0-38.7).Stunting was observed in 12.9% of children,wasting in 4.3%,underweight in 12.9%.Precocious puberty was diagnosed in 2.2% of children.17.1% IAC had diagnosis of special needs.Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders represented the 41.7% of children with special needs and 48.1% of Russian children.Independent predictive factors for stunting were age < 5 years,a diagnosis of special need and having been living in Italy for < 60 days since the arrival.Conclusion Stunting among IAC is a frequent finding especially in children < 5 years and in those with special needs,independently from their geographical origin.

Intercultural Collaboration in Group Work at Chinese Universities

The empirical work on intercultural communication issues at university settings have mainly focused on the minority cul-tural groups and the majority groups are usually neglected.Most Chinese scholars are engaged in the development of cross-cultural communication competence of the Chinese EFL learners,the few researches on intercultural relations in Chinese universities are also on the international students.To compare the attitudes and motivations of both the International Students in China(ISCs)and the Chinese Home Students(CHSs)in intercultural collaboration(IC)in the group work,group discussion and questionnaire survey areemployed.Survey of the 445 CHSs and 87 ISCs show that the IC environment at Chinese universities is far from satisfactory.Those who have IC experiences find they have encountered difficulties in adapting to each other's language,race,religion,agenda,etc.Chinese students'language difficulty is regarded both groups as the first obstacle in their collaboration,but personality is the first concern in their choice of a workmate.Neither language proficiency nor IC courses are significant factor in their motivation for IC involvement.What they want most is the real collaboration opportunities and programs.The findings may provide some reference for Chinese universities in their construction of international and intercultural campus environment.

Current Status and Development Strategies of TCMM Exportation in China

Low market share, small scale, inappropriate product structure, relativelyhigh market concentration, and heavy dependence on Asian markets such as Japan and Korea are some ofthe characteristics of the current exportation status of traditional Chinese medicinal materials(TCMM). The profound reasons for these problems lie in the cultural, technological and informativebarriers between TCMM and the international market as well as the underdevelopment of TCMMmodernization. Therefore, measures should be taken to enhance the cultural exchange and strategiccooperation in TCMM marketing with international organizations, implement a standardization of TCMM,establish information sharing and other supporting mechanisms, and accelerate TCMM modernizationand innovation.

Integrating traditional Chinese (herbal) medicines into risk based regulation-With focus on non-clinical requirements to demonstrate safety

Within the public health sector of Hong Kong(China),there is a consensus around the important role of traditional Chinese medicines.For Hong Kong(China)to play a bridging role to bring Chinese medicines to the global market requires a concerted effort from the government,academic institutes and industries.The release of the final version of the European Medicines Agencies guidance document,which details the acceptance of minimum requirements to nonclinical package in bibliographical applications,grants the opportunity for well-established and traditional herbal medicines to demonstrate an‘acceptable safe’status for registration in the European Union.It is anticipated that this minimum nonclinical package can be applied to demonstrate the safe use of many traditional Chinese medicines regardless of their eligibility to be registered under the simplified procedure within the European Union.This paper conceptualizes an integration of a simplified evaluation route for eligible proprietary Chinese medicines(pCm)with long history of use into the existing drug regulatory framework in Hong Kong(China).Such integration utilizing the minimum nonclinical package,based on bibliographical data or expert report,as proof of evidence to demonstrate safety for pCm with long history of use requires less demand in scientific resources.With Hong Kong(China)conducting‘first hand’review for eligible pCm,it provides an option for overseas and local pharmaceutical companies to register their products in Hong Kong(China)without the need to rely on issuance of Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product from other countries.This could bring eligible pCm with long history of use to reach international risk-based standard and to be marketed globally as‘medicines’to reach their full therapeutic potential.An important process to positioning Hong Kong(China)to compete with other countries in promoting importation and exportation of pCm to better serve the global health.

Global trends in international research collaboration, 1980-2021

Purpose:The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of international research collaboration from 1980 to 2021.The study examines the main global patterns as well as those specific to individual countries,country groups,and different areas of research.Design/methodology/approach:The study is based on the Web of Science Core collection database.More than 50 million publications are analyzed using co-authorship data.International collaboration is defined as publications having authors affiliated with institutions located in more than one country.Findings:At the global level,the share of publications representing international collaboration has gradually increased from 4.7%in 1980 to 25.7%in 2021.The proportion of such publications within each country is higher and,in 2021,varied from less than 30%to more than 90%.There are notable disparities in the temporal trends,indicating that the process of internationalization has impacted countries in different ways.Several factors such as country size,income level,and geopolitics may explain the variance.Research limitations:Not all international research collaboration results in joint co-authored scientific publications.International co-authorship is a partial indicator of such collaboration.Another limitation is that the applied full counting method does not take into account the number of authors representing in each country in the publication.Practical implications:The study provides global averages,indicators,and concepts that can provide a useful framework of reference for further comparative studies of international research collaboration.Originality/value:Long-term macro-level studies of international collaboration are rare,and as a novelty,this study includes an analysis by the World Bank’s division of countries into four income groups.
