LKMT:Linguistics Knowledge-Driven Multi-Task Neural Machine Translation for Urdu and English

Thanks to the strong representation capability of pre-trained language models,supervised machine translation models have achieved outstanding performance.However,the performances of these models drop sharply when the scale of the parallel training corpus is limited.Considering the pre-trained language model has a strong ability for monolingual representation,it is the key challenge for machine translation to construct the in-depth relationship between the source and target language by injecting the lexical and syntactic information into pre-trained language models.To alleviate the dependence on the parallel corpus,we propose a Linguistics Knowledge-Driven MultiTask(LKMT)approach to inject part-of-speech and syntactic knowledge into pre-trained models,thus enhancing the machine translation performance.On the one hand,we integrate part-of-speech and dependency labels into the embedding layer and exploit large-scale monolingual corpus to update all parameters of pre-trained language models,thus ensuring the updated language model contains potential lexical and syntactic information.On the other hand,we leverage an extra self-attention layer to explicitly inject linguistic knowledge into the pre-trained language model-enhanced machine translation model.Experiments on the benchmark dataset show that our proposed LKMT approach improves the Urdu-English translation accuracy by 1.97 points and the English-Urdu translation accuracy by 2.42 points,highlighting the effectiveness of our LKMT framework.Detailed ablation experiments confirm the positive impact of part-of-speech and dependency parsing on machine translation.

A Few Important and Original Aspects of Carlo Cattaneo’s Philosophical-Linguistic Ideas

The essay has two main purposes.The first is a general reconstruction of Cattaneo’s linguistic thought,highlighting the most important aspects of both his reflections on the connection between language and the community of speakers,and his study of the functions and properties of language.The latter includes an analysis of the influence Cattaneo’s philosophy had on the sphere of Italian linguistics at the turn of the 20th century.

Linguistic landscape and its impacts on place-making in mountain destination:A case of Mogan Mountain Town of Huzhou City,China

The place and placeness are believed to be a crucial perspective for comprehending the transformative dynamics of tourist destinations in the context of globalization and the rapid development of the tourism industry.As the material carrier of language,linguistic landscape is an intermediary for people to endow emotions and personalities into the place,becoming an effective path for exploring the place-making in a certain area.Mogan Mountain is a famous national tourist resort,which is located in Mogan Mountain Town,Deqing County,Huzhou City,China.This is a good case area for studying the relationship between linguistic landscape and placemaking in tourist destinations.There are two theories that form the theoretical foundation of the study,namely the place and the geosemiotics.Firstly,the results showed the overall style of the linguistic landscape.Multilingual labelling(52.7%),official signs(55.3%),and standardized Chinese characters predominantly shaped the linguistic landscape,with English and other languages being complementary.Secondly,from the perspective of three dimensions of the geosemiotics framework,such as inscription,language preference,and placement position,we conduct a comprehensive semiotic analysis of the linguistic landscape,which encompasses diverse facets such as fonts,materials,shifts in state,text vectors,and symmetrical arrangements.Finally,we explore the influence of linguistic landscapes on the place-making of Mogan Mountain through the dimensions of location,locale,and sense of place.The information on linguistic landscapes indicates the geographical location.These linguistic landscapes play an important role in constructing the language order,nostalgic atmosphere,exotic atmosphere,and elegant and tasteful lifestyle of the public space in Mogan Mountain.Readers of linguistic landscapes,including tourists and residents,generate and identify with the unique sense of place in Mogan Mountain.These linguistic landscapes construct the destination placeness of Mogan Mountain that combines both foreign and nostalgic styles,and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures.It will help promote the image positioning of tourism destinations and have practical guiding significance for the tourism planning,landscape-making,language management,and other aspects of tourism destinations.

An Evidence-Based CoCoSo Framework with Double Hierarchy Linguistic Data for Viable Selection of Hydrogen Storage Methods

Hydrogen is the new age alternative energy source to combat energy demand and climate change.Storage of hydrogen is vital for a nation’s growth.Works of literature provide different methods for storing the produced hydrogen,and the rational selection of a viable method is crucial for promoting sustainability and green practices.Typically,hydrogen storage is associated with diverse sustainable and circular economy(SCE)criteria.As a result,the authors consider the situation a multi-criteria decision-making(MCDM)problem.Studies infer that previous models for hydrogen storage method(HSM)selection(i)do not consider preferences in the natural language form;(ii)weights of experts are not methodically determined;(iii)hesitation of experts during criteria weight assessment is not effectively explored;and(iv)three-stage solution of a suitable selection of HSM is unexplored.Driven by these gaps,in this paper,authors put forward a new integrated framework,which considers double hierarchy linguistic information for rating,criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation(CRITIC)for expert weight calculation,evidence-based Bayesian method for criteria weight estimation,and combined compromise solution(CoCoSo)for ranking HSMs.The applicability of the developed framework is testified by using a case example of HSM selection in India.Sensitivity and comparative analysis reveal the merits and limitations of the developed framework.

Examining Zhang Peiji’s Translation of Beiying:A Study on the Representation of Zhu Ziqing’s Linguistic Style

Based on Yan Fu’s translation norms of“faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance”and Liu Miqing’s concept of aesthetic representation in translation,the present study employed a combined method of qualitative and quantitative analysis to investigate the linguistic styles employed by Zhu Ziqing in his renowned prose Beiying.Then,using relevant corpora and self-designed Python software,we investigated whether Zhang Peiji,as a translator,has successfully reproduced the simplistic,emotional,and realistic linguistic characteristics in Zhu Ziqing’s prose from the perspectives of“faithfulness,expressiveness,and elegance.”The findings of the research indicate that by employing a dynamic imitative translation approach,Zhang Peiji has successfully enhanced the linguistic aesthetic qualities of the source text,striving to reflect the distinctive linguistic style of Zhu Ziqing.

Exploring Nominalization in English Abstracts of Applied Linguistics Research Articles:A Comparative Study Between Chinese and International Journals

Researchers around the world strive to communicate new knowledge,primarily via publication,with the abstract being crucial in conveying core insights.Previous research has generally analyzed the discourse features of abstracts from a macro perspective and often employed either outdated texts,such as those over a decade old,or papers written by authors with lower English academic writing proficiency as research material.In this study,we analyzed forty abstracts from leading journals in applied linguistics,evenly split between Chinese and international journals.It revealed that the use of nominalization in abstracts by Chinese and international scholars showed similarities due to the universal academic requirement for conciseness.However,due to cultural and educational differences,each group differed in their respective language choices and nominalization usage.By analyzing the application of nominalization in different cultural contexts,the results of our study offered practical suggestions for crafting abstracts that effectively convey information,thereby,contributing to the broader academic community.

Accessing Academic Discourse:Systemic Functional Linguistics and Legitimation Code Theory,was edited by J.R.Martin,Karl Maton and Y.J.Doran and published by Routledge in 2020.This volume explores the dialogue with Legitimation Code Theory(LCT)from the viewpoint of systemic functional linguistics(SFL).“Systemic functional linguistics(SFL)is a long-established and widely known approach to understanding language.Legitimation Code Theory(LCT)is a younger and rapidly growing approach to exploring and shaping knowledge practices”(p.1).They have become widely used to access academic discourse by a growing number of systemic scholars and educators.

为了及时跟进国际研究前沿,以充实和完善我国听障儿童康复干预体系,本研究选择国际权威学术期刊《Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics》,选取其中59篇聚焦于听障儿童语言习得与康复干预的核心文献,以期通过对期刊总计1194篇文献进行深入可视化处理后,探究听障儿童相关研究在二十年期间内的主要聚焦点。根据研究领域的变迁,将听障儿童语言习得与康复干预的研究分为三个阶段:阶段一(2002~2008年),该阶段的研究主要以语音学为核心;阶段二(2009~2015年),语音学研究依旧占据主导,但非语音学研究开始逐步增多,显示听障儿童语言康复研究的初步拓展;阶段三(2016~2022年),非语音学相关研究的数量和影响力显著超越语音学研究,标志着听障儿童语言康复研究进入了多元化发展阶段。In order to follow up the international research frontier in time, so as to enrich and improve the rehabilitation intervention system of hearing-impaired children in China, this study selected the international authoritative academic journal Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics, and selected 59 core literatures focusing on language acquisition and rehabilitation intervention of hearing-impaired children, in order to explore the main focus points of related research on hearing-impaired children in 20 years after in-depth visualization of a total of 1194 literatures in the journal. According to the changes of research fields, the research on language acquisition and rehabilitation intervention of hearing-impaired children is divided into three stages: stage 1 (2002~2008), which mainly focuses on phonetics;In the second stage (2009~2015), phonetic research still dominates, but non-phonetic research begins to gradually increase, showing the initial expansion of language rehabilitation research for hearing-impaired children;In the third stage (2016~2022), the number and influence of non-phonetics-related research significantly surpassed that of phonetics research, marking that language rehabilitation research for hearing-impaired children has entered a diversified development stage.

How Rustic Videos Influence Youth’s Linguistic Expression: An Analysis Based on Semiotics, Meme Theory and Media Spectacle Theory

The surge in popularity of rustic videos has spawned a great number of Internet memes, such as Internet trendy words growing from dialects and strange pronunciations, picture memes made from video screenshots, and mesmerizing music with a vernacular flavor. Due to their reproducibility, social interaction, and involvement, these rustic videos adhere to the fundamental logic of the propagation of online memes. Rustic videos are widely disseminated as online memes on TikTok (the Chinese version), are often reproduced and used by young people in social contact, and have become a unique linguistic symbol in modern internet culture. As a symbolic carrier that transports the consciousness of the video creator and viewer, it is widely employed in the communication and engagement of young people on a regular basis, progressively altering their linguistic expression. This specific semiotic interaction has deconstructed and recreated the conventional media culture spectacle. This research examines the influence of rustic videos on TikTok on the linguistic expressions of modern youth from the perspectives of meme theory and semiotics, as well as the impact of rustic videos on the media spectacle from the standpoint of media spectacle theory. It also examines in depth the effects of the popularity of rustic videos on China’s economy and culture.

The Determination Method of Product Engineering Features Based on Linguistic Variables

To overcome the problem of imprecise and unclear information in the development of quality functions,a method for determining the priority of engineering features based on mixed linguistic variables is proposed.First,the evaluation member uses the determined linguistic variable to give the correlation strength evaluation matrix of customer requirements and engineering features.Secondly,the relative importance of the evaluation member and customer requirements are aggregated.Finally,the priority of engineering features is obtained by calculating the deviation.The feasibility and practicability of this method are proven by taking the design of a new product of a long bag low-pressure pulse dust collector as an example.

Multiple attribute decision making based on different types of linguistic information

Distance measures between exact linguistic variables and between uncertain linguistic variables are introduced respectively. Based on exact linguistic variables and uncertain linguistic variables, the concepts of positive linguistic ideal solution and negative linguistic ideal solution of attribute values are defined. To rank and select alternatives, based on the distance measures of two types of linguistic variables and the linguistic ideal solutions, a method for multiple attribute decision making with different types of linguistic information is proposed, by which all alternatives can be ranked. The method can carry out linguistic computation processes easily without loss of linguistic information, and thus makes the decision result reasonable and effective. Finally, the implementation process of the proposed method is illustrated and analyzed by a numerical example.

An interpretation of J. C. Catford＇s A linguistic theory of translation

J. C. Catford is a world-renowned British linguist and translation theorist, and also an outstanding representative of the linguistic school of translation. His famous work A linguistic theory of translation was first published by Oxford University Press in 1965, and republished in 1967. It was among the list of the series of language and linguistic studies of Oxford University. This essay attempts to interpret this great book in five aspects, namely, definition of translation, types of translation, translation equivalence, transference, and limits of translatability, and tries to probe into the positive impact of its theories on the development of translation theory and its limitations.

A group decision making method based on double hesitant linguistic preference relations

A simple decision method is proposed to solve the group decision making problems in which the weights of decision organizations are unknown and the preferences for alternatives are provided by double hesitant linguistic preference relations. First, double hesitant linguistic elements are defined as representing the uncertain assessment information in the process of group decision making accurately and comprehensively, and the double hesitant linguistic weighted averaging operator is developed based on the defined operational laws for double hesitant linguistic elements. Then, double hesitant linguistic preference relations are defined and a means to objectively determine the weights of decision organizations is put forward using the standard deviation of scores of preferences provided by the individual decision organization for altematives. Finally the correlation coefficient between the scores of preferences and the scores of preferences are provided by the other decision organizations. Accordingly, a group decision method based on double hesitant linguistic preference relations is proposed, and a practical example of the Jiudianxia reservoir operation alternative selection is used to illustrate the practicability and validity of the method. Finally, the proposed method is compared with the existing methods. Comparative results show that the proposed method can deal with the double hesitant linguistic preference information directly, does not need any information transformation, and can thus reduce the loss of original decision information.

Enabling weakened hedges in linguistic multi-criteria decision making

A semantics-based model is proposed to enable weakened hedges, such as ＂more or less＂ and ＂roughly＂ in the context of linguistic multi-criteria decision making. First, the resemblance relations are defined based on the semantics of terms on the domain. Then, the hedges can be represented after the upper and loose upper approximations of a linguistic term are derived. Accordingly, some compact formulae can be derived for the semantics of linguistic expressions with hedges. Parameters in these formulae are objectively determined according to the semantics of original terms. The proposed model presents a more natural way to express the decision information under uncertainties and its semantics is clear. The proposed model is clarified by solving the problem of evaluation and selection of sustainable innovative energy technologies. Computational results demonstrate that the model can deal with various uncertainties of the problem. Finally, the model is compared with existing techniques and extended to the case when the semantics of terms are represented by trapezoidal fuzzy numbers.
