Communicative, Learner-centered Approach in EMP

This paper discusses communicative approaches in order to help the teacher effect an orderly transition from general English teaching to English for specific purposes. Language, considered as a tool of communication, no longer appears as a separate subject but as an aspect of other subjects. What is needed, therefore, is a different orientation to college English teaching and to find out an approach, which departs from what is generally taken. The approach aims at developing skills and ability to use language in the performance of different communicative acts. Sociocultural Theory on Interaction between Teachers and Learners in a Second Language Classroom

近几年来,大学公共英语课教学内容与方法的改革与研究呈现百家争鸣的状态,笔者在自身课堂教学实践和与学生交流调查的基础上,从教师、教学大纲和学生三者的角度对现在大学公共英语教学改革在当今课堂上实践的可行性提出几点看法。

Service Learning at National Taipei College of Business, 2012-2013＂ New Perspectives on Community, Peer-Based Education

Service learning （also known as peer learning） has received increased attention in tertiary education. By linking learning with authentic volunteer work experience, service learning bridges the gap between theoretical study and practical reality. This practice can increase students＇ professional knowledge, educational development, self-esteem, and awareness of social responsibility. Service learning became a mandatory requirement for all students at National Taipei College of Business （NTCB; now National Taipei University of Business） in 2011, and this is the focus of this study, extending into the 2012 school year. This course-based program allows undergraduate language majors to put their language skills into practice by teaching peers, and also through other volunteer work. This program has greatly benefitted undergraduate students at the school. This study will examine course data, student reports, and interviews with student teachers. The researchers have documented the implementation of the peer-mentor program at NTCB, and the learning gains experienced among students and the professors who assisted in these processes.

Popular Presumptions and their Fallacies in Teaching ESL Writing： Reflections on my First-year Experience as an English Writing Teacher

This paper makes in-depth reflections on the writer＇s first year experience as an ESL writing teacher at a Chinese college. In this paper, the author reflects on four popular presumptions about ESL writing teaching he held at the outset of the course and the problems he encountered during the course, and critically points out fallacies and dangers rooted in the presumptions, arguing that without conscious understanding of them, inexperienced writing teachers could be trapped and end up in a failure of teaching. The author therefore highlights some new developments of ESL writing and their significance for the situation in China, and proposes an integrated approach for the green ESL teachers to create leaner-centered L2 writing ：classes in their own classroom practice.

Vocabulary Teaching Strategies Focusing on Language Learner

As we enter the 21st century, acquisition of vocabulary has assumed a more important role, and as some would argue, it has assumed the central role in learning a second language. On one hand, students have a strong desire to improve their English level in order to make them more adaptable when they step into this competitive society after graduation. On the other hand, most students are facing a great difficulty in learning a large number of vocabularies though they do spend a lot of time and energy on it. Also, recent researches show that students don＇t like the classroom that is still teacher-centered and lecture-based. They want to be more involved in class and more responsible for their own studies. Hence, it is important to equip students with necessary strategies for dealing with vocabulary learning activities. In this paper, three strategies are recommended： extensive listening ＆ reading and contextual guesswork, communicative activities and group-work and the use of dictionary.
