Developing a modernized economy from the perspective of ecological civilization

The construction of ecological civilization is to firmly grasp the core purpose of harmonious coexistence between human and nature, and realize the sustainable coexistence and development of human and nature. In the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, first, we should put the ecological civilization in a prominent position while building a modernized economy facing the deteriorating ecological environment. Second, we should correctly understand the dialectical relationship between the ecological civilization and the modernized economy. On the one hand, there is a contradictory relationship between the ecological civilization and the modernized economy. On the other hand, they are mutually unified. Therefore,we should put the ecological civilization construction in a prominent position, build a modernized economy under the guidance of the concept of ecological civilization, and alleviate the impact of economic development on the balance of ecosystems. Thus, it can promote a new leap in the harmonious development of human and nature. Third, if the economic development is not coordinated with ecological protection, there must be an unknown human crisis behind the prosperity of economy. Therefore, we should integrate the ecological civilization into the modernized economy and develop the economy on the premise of protecting ecological environment. What's more, there are three aspects needed to pay attention to. First, the establishment and improvement of eco-economic system with modern green development should be accelerated to provide a green development impetus for modernized economy. Next, the establishment and improvement of sci-tech innovation system with modern green development should be accelerated to provide scientific and technological support for the modern green economy system. Finally, the establishment and improvement of institutional constraint system with modern green development should be accelerated to provide institutional guarantee for the modernized economy.

Is Chinese industry modernized?——Analysis of modernization in China’s 15 key industries

Based on the construction of an evaluation indictor system, this paper analyzes the modernization levels of 15 industries included in China’s five industry categories: energy, high-tech, medium high-tech, medium low-tech and low-tech industries. Our research reaches five conclusions. First, the level of modernization of the shipbuilding, iron and steel, and petroleum industries has achieved 50% of the advanced level globally, and these three industries have covered half of the modernization process. Second, the level of industrial modernization of the electric power, computer manufacturing and textile industries has exceeded the overall level in China, and now approaches 50% of the advanced level globally. Third, the level of industrial modernization of the chemical industry is also higher than the whole level in China. Fourth, the modernization level of the cement, coal mining and lathe industries is the lowest. This level is under the Chinese overall level of industrial modernization, and has not achieved 30% of the advanced level globally, which is to say that these three industries have not covered a third of the modernization process. Lastly, the industrial modernization level of the pharmaceutical, telecommunication equipment, automobile, food and papermaking industries is equivalent to the whole level of Chinese industrial modernization, and has basically finished a third of the modernization course.

Modern technologies and solutions to enhance surveillance and response systems for emerging zoonotic diseases

Background:Zoonotic diseases originating in animals pose a significant threat to global public health.Recent outbreaks,such as coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),have caused widespread illness,death,and socioeconomic disruptions worldwide.To cope with these diseases effectively,it is crucial to strengthen surveillance capabilities and establish rapid response systems.Aim:The aim of this review is to examine the modern technologies and solutions that have the potential to enhance zoonotic disease surveillance and outbreak responses and provide valuable insights into how cuttingedge innovations could be leveraged to prevent,detect,and control emerging zoonotic disease outbreaks.Herein,we discuss advanced tools including big data analytics,artificial intelligence,the Internet of Things,geographic information systems,remote sensing,molecular diagnostics,point-of-care testing,telemedicine,digital contact tracing,and early warning systems.Results:These technologies enable real-time monitoring,the prediction of outbreak risks,early anomaly detection,rapid diagnosis,and targeted interventions during outbreaks.When integrated through collaborative partnerships,these strategies can significantly improve the speed and effectiveness of zoonotic disease control.However,several challenges persist,particularly in resource-limited settings,such as infrastructure limitations,costs,data integration and training requirements,and ethical implementation.Conclusion:With strategic planning and coordinated efforts,modern technologies and solutions offer immense potential to bolster surveillance and outbreak responses,and serve as a critical resource against emerging zoonotic disease threats worldwide.

Professor LUO Guoan,a professor at Tsinghua University,is the director of the Network Center(Ministry of Education,PRC)for Collaborative Study of TCM Modernization.His main research areas include pharmaceutical analysis,modernization of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),and systems biology for TCM.Currently,his research focuses on organ-on-a-chip,organoid-on-a-chip,and drug sensitivity screening and automated platform for tumor organoid.As one of the pioneers of microfluidic technology in China,Prof.Luo has led his research team in conducting research on microfluidic technology in the field of biomedicine for more than 20 years.They have successfully established a highly integrated and automated bio-mimetic microfluidic chip experimental platform,and developed various new models of microfluidic organ-on-a-chip.These contributions have provided reliable experimental platforms and in vitro models for the evaluation of drug efficacy and safety.Prof.Luo is also dedicated to applying modern pharmaceutical analysis techniques and multidisciplinary approaches from life sciences to the study of complex systems of TCM.He has founded and developed a series of theoretical and technical frameworks for the analysis of TCM and the modern research of TCM formulas,including fingerprints of traditional Chinese medicines,Chemomics,and TCM integrative systems biology,thereby advancing the modernization of TCM research.His research achievements have been awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Second Prize four times,and multiple provincial and ministerial-level science and technology progress or natural science awards.

Human impact gradients via anthropogenic pollen indicators:insights gleaned from a case study in the Rif Mountains(Northern Morocco)

Understanding the relationship between modern pollen and vegetation is crucial for interpreting fossil pollen records and assessing human impact on the environment,both of which are essential for effective environmental management strategies.Despite numerous studies on fossil pollen records in the Rif landscape,research specifically focusing on modern pollen and its implications for understanding human impact on the natural landscape is notably lacking.This paper presents novel anthropogenic pollen indicators for the Rif Mountains and seeks to evaluate the gradients of human impact on the southern Mediterranean landscape.We employed a combination of modern pollen analysis,vegetation survey,and ordination techniques,incorporating various environmental and land-use variables.Canonical correspondence analysis(CCA)allowed us to evaluate the relationships between pollen types and environmental variables,helping us identify key anthropogenic pollen indicators associated with land use and human activities:Poaceae,Cannabist,Olea-t,and Asteraceae for cultivation;Brassicaceae,Genista-t,Poaceae,Asteraceae and Plantago-t,for grazing;Apiaceae,Urtica-t and Genista-t for slashing and burning.Additionally,an anthropogenic index score(AIS)was calculated for each sampled location.Correspondence analysis(CA)was then used to correlate each specific pollen type with levels of human impact as follows(a)low(e.g.,Cedrus atlantica-t,Quercus canariensis-t),(b)moderate(e.g.,Erica-t,Arbutus unedo-t,Eucalyptus-t),and(c)high(e.g.,Cannabis-t,Brassicaceae,Olea-t,Nicotiana-t).This paper enhances our comprehension of land-use dynamics and impact levels,providing essential insights for evaluating anthropogenic impact trends and human-induced changes in the Rif Mountains landscape.

Modern pollen-vegetation relationships along altitudinal vegetation belts in the Leigong Mountain of southwestern China

Understanding the distribution,dispersal,and correlation of modern pollen with vegetation in mountainous regions is essential for establishing accurate modern analogs for fossil pollen records.This study,conducted in Leigong Mountain on the YunnanGuizhou Plateau of southwestern China,involved the collection of 35 surface soil samples from diverse vegetation communities along an elevational gradient ranging from 1210 to 1875 meters.The results reveal a close correspondence between modern pollen assemblages and vegetation zones.Principal Component Analysis(PCA)results indicate that pollen assemblages can effectively distinguish between subtropical montane evergreen broad-leaved forest(SEBF)and subtropical montane deciduous broadleaved forest(SDBF).However,both SEBF and SDBF show significant overlap with subtropical montane evergreen-deciduous broad-leaved mixed forest(SEMF).Detrended Correspondence Analysis(DCA)results clearly distinguish the three vegetation zones,and the first axis of DCA shows a significant positive correlation with elevation(p<0.01,R=0.48).Discriminant Analysis(DA)successfully assigns 94.4%of the modern pollen samples to their respective vegetation zones.Pollen taxa such as Impatiens,Astertype,and Rosaceae exhibit significant indicative capabilities for the SEBF zone,effectively distinguishing this vegetation zone from others.Pinus and Alnus display overrepresentation in the Leigong Mountain region,while Quercus(D,deciduous-type)and Poaceae exhibit high representation in the SEBF zone.In the SEBF zone,both pollen diversity and richness are the lowest.Our study reveals the complex relationship between the richness and diversity of pollen and vegetation.The diversity and richness of tree and shrub pollen are found to be lower than those of the corresponding plants.The pollen-vegetation relationship elucidated in this study serves as a critical reference for reconstructing ancient environments from fossil pollen retrieved in this region.

Traditional medicine has garnered significant global recognition,with an estimated 80%of the global population using it.Therefore,it is essential to fully understand the integration of traditional medicines into current healthcare systems.This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the standard process to modernize traditional medicine scientifically in the context of modern biomedicine,further termed here as“scientization”.Specifically,we aim to summarize the advancements made in understanding the efficacy,effectiveness,and underlying mechanisms of herbal medicine.We also examined the transition from experience-to evidence-based medicine during acupuncture.Furthermore,we explore the development of universal safety and quality control standards.Finally,we discuss international trade and export markets for Chinese medical products.The development and integration of traditional medicine have allowed it to further improve human health,resulting in a more comprehensive health solution for the global population.

New Industrialization: Characteristics, System Development and Implementation Pathway

New industrialization in China, different from its past economic development pattern or patterns in developed nations, is the country’s theoretical innovation based on the positive and negative experiences of industrialization at home and worldwide. New industrialization has various novel characteristics, including new sources of efficiency, new factors of production, new organizational forms, and new constraints. In addition, it has certain particularities arising from modernization with Chinese characteristics. This article summarizes the characteristics of new industrialization from the perspectives of people-centered approach, quality-first concept, independent innovation, green low-carbon economics, digital-real integration, and open circulation. There are four systems for promoting new industrialization: A self-sustained scientific and technological system, a high-end advanced manufacturing system, a green low-carbon circular system, and a division of labor system with domestic and international circulation. The Chinese new industrialization proposes the pathway and policy measures considering the new global situation and the requirements of new goals of strengthening organization and leadership, reducing factor cost, accelerating independent technological innovation, smoothing domestic and international circulation, and optimizing competition environment.

Deepening National Security Reforms to Guarantee Consistent Advancement in Chinese Modernization

Persistent efforts are needed to fully implement the guiding principles of the third plenary session of the 20th Communist Party of China(CPC)Central Committee and advance the reform of China's national security work on the new journey that lies ahead.All of us in the Party should never forget our original aspiration.Since the advent of the new era,China has pushed forward and made remarkable achievements in reforming its national security work,undergoing a process of constant evolvement and continuous improvement.The third plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee could be deemed the starting point of comprehensively deepening reform in the new era,opening a new epoch for reforming and innovating China's national security work.It identified modernizing China's system and capacity for governance as the overall goal of further deepening reform comprehensively and,most significantly,made a historic decision to establish the National Security Commission,having far-reaching impacts.General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed pursuing a holistic approach to national security,which provides us with fundamental guidance for further reform.The new version of the National Security Law of the People's Republic of China fully covers China's national security system and will guide the improvement of its legal system for national security in the new era.The fourth plenary session of the 19th CPC Central Committee called for improving China's national security system in efforts to modernize the country's system and capacity for governance.The 20th CPC National Congress clarified the Party's central task on the new journey and made strategic plans for safeguarding Chinese modernization through modernizing the country's national security system and capacity.The third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee carried forward the spirit of the above meetings,from the third plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee to the 20th CPC National Congress,reiterating the importance of further deepening reform comprehensively on the new journey,emphasizing national security as the foundation for advancing Chinese modernization,and setting out the road map and agenda for modernizing China's national security system and capacity in the next five years.Therefore,we must study and implement the guiding principles of the third plenary session of the 2Oth CPC Central Committee.

Determinants of Modern Contraceptive Uptake among the Youth in Akuse Township in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, Ghana

Background: Access to safe and effective contraception is crucial for sexual and reproductive health to be at its best. This allows improved pregnancy results and the avoidance of unintended births. Teenagers’ views on using contraceptives are influenced by the information available at their disposal. The study assessed the influential factors affecting the utilization of modern contraceptives among the youth in Akuse in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Methods: The data for the study were gathered from 378 consented youth aged 15 - 24 years using a quantitative cross-sectional study design and a well-structured questionnaire. Person’s Chi-Square test was adopted to measure the association between the outcome variable and selected independent variables. Logistic regression models were utilized to measure the odds of the factors influencing modern contraceptive use among the respondents. Results: The results of the study suggested a high knowledge level of contraceptives;however, the prevalence of utilization was low. The level of education and age were factors found to influence the uptake of contraceptives. A bivariate analysis to examine the association between selected socio-demographic variables revealed that educational level (p = 0.044), religious affiliation (p = 0.002), and ethnicity (p = 0.016) were statistically associated with modern contraceptive use among the respondents. All other tested demographic variables including the age groups, gender, marital status, and residential status proved otherwise at the observed p-values greater than the 0.05 threshold. Respondents who indicated staying with partners were 6.79 times more likely to use contraceptives compared to their counterparts staying with a parent, after controlling for all other covariates. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that high contraceptive knowledge influences the choice of contraceptive preferred by the youth, and contraceptive use is also influenced by the advancement in age and educational level of the youth. It is however recommended that parents, guidance, and teachers be entreated to offer relevant and timely sexual information or education as these will most likely improve the uptake of modern contraceptives among the targeted population.

Theword“cancer”is associated with terrifying situations,and there is often an aggressive intent to cure.Uncertainty about survival and fear of disfigurement cause major turmoil in the minds of patients and relatives.Teamwork with multimodal care is the key to achieving satisfactory outcomes.Advanced imaging modalities have aided in early detection and derivation of optimal treatment plans.Although radical excision of tumors with neoadjuvant or concurrent chemotherapy/radiotherapy has long been the best management option,we have moved froma radical to a conservative approach.In advanced disease,the plan should be to provide supportive care and improve quality of life.Compassion and counseling play important roles.Nutritional support for correcting cancer cachexia is equally important during tumor excision.Newer therapies such as targeted therapy,stem cell therapy,and chemodynamic therapy are all focused on ensuring safe and efficient outcomes;however,the war against cancer continues to oscillate between hope and despair.

Rationale and Pathway for New Industrialization in the Context of Chinese Modernization

The concepts of modernization and industrialization have different connotations that are specific to their historical backgrounds,and their theoretical innovation and development may benefit from China’s experiences.Industrialization is the cornerstone of modernization,and holds the key to its success.China’s experiences in blazing a new trail of industrialization are challenging the traditional Western theory of industrialization and deepening the connotations of Chinese modernization.New industrialization is a key entry point for steering China’s modernization drive and theoretical innovations.This paper offers an overview of the theory of Chinese modernization and its evolving trend along China’s socialist industrialization path,as well as the rationale and pathway for new industrialization in the context of Chinese modernization.As our findings suggest,the new industrialization concept has taken hold in every key aspect of Chinese modernization.When combined with the theory of Chinese modernization,the theoretical implications of new industrialization play a crucial role in propelling Chinese modernization forward along a new journey in the new era.
