The Narrator's Pangs in Pangs of Love : Uncertainty of Cultural Identity

Pangs of Love tells the experiences of Chinese American immigrants, and especially the pangs the narrator, as a second generation, feels in family, love and social affairs. Based on the analysis of the narrator's pangs, this paper argues that it is mainly the uncertainty of cultural identity that leads to the pangs of the narrator, and of the second generation Chinese Americans. This paper shows that the second generation can take advantage of their dual but conflicting cultural heritages to develop a renewed and specific cultural identity.

The Incarnated Narrator as a Character in Middlemarch

Sympathy is one of the essential themes that George Eliot discusses in her novels. She uses various effective narrative strategies for the emergence of that theme. This paper, based on a close reading on the passage from Middlemarch, explores one of them——the incarnation of the narrator as a character. In Middlemarch, the narrator, as a character, both shows sympathy to the characters and asks for sympathy from the readers. To show his sympathy to the characters, he provides his comprehensive analysis of the characters and authorizes his characters to present their opinions. To ask for the sympathy, he directly addresses to the readers, uses free indirect speech in the narration, and expresses his own emotions. By the strategy of incarnation of the narrator as a character, Eliot clearly presents the readers her purpose of writing.

Narrator,Anti-hero and Tragedy:A Comparative Reading of American Pastoral and Lord Jim

American novelist Philip Roth demonstrated admiration for and intimacy with Joseph Conrad’s works.Testimonies abound of Roth’s direct and oblique references to Conrad’s novels.A close and comparative reading of Roth’s American Pastoral and Conrad’s Lord Jim reveals the intertextuality between the two novels in three aspects:narrative techniques,characterization and the protagonist’s tragedy.By incorporating Conrad’s Lord Jim into the fabric of American Pastoral through intertextuality,Roth rewrites Jim’s story in a new historical and social context,throwing new light on the canonical work and revealing the dilemma and tragedy of American Jewish immigrants in their pursuit of American Dream.

An Analysis of the Unreliable Narrator in The Tell-Tale Heart

This paper aims at identifying the speaker"I"as an unreliable narrator through analyzing the motivation, process and confession of the crime. It is found out that the narrator symbolizes man of evil, while, the old man's vulture eye symbolizes virtue. It's a story about the conflict between evil and virtue.

An Analysis of the Role of the Narrator in Cranford:The Transition from“I”to“We”

Mrs.Gaskell carried an excellent reputation in the Victorian era for her quality works in depicting the many strata of society and social changes[1].Among her classic works,Cranford is said to be the only book that she would reread again in her aged years[2].The unique standing of the novel may be ascribed to its careful use of the narrative strategy,specifically the role of the narrator.However,most of the studies on the narrator focus on the feminist point of view,and very few are concerned with the changes of the narrative voice between“I”and“we.”This paper attempts to explain the purpose of this transition by analyzing the role of the narrator and her interactions with other characters.It is concluded that the change of narrative voice is an illustration of the transition of the narrator’s role and emotion,which evokes the readers’emotional response and helps them better understand one of the themes-feminist utopia.This paper is divided into three sections.The first section looks at the social milieu of the novel.The second section discusses two major roles of the narrator,Mary Smith as a reporter and a mediator,respectively.The third section talks about the narrator’s growth from a minor character to a leading participant,and the implied theme is discussed as well.

人工智能生成内容(AI Generated Content,简称AIGC)电影包括内涵丰富的多种维度,从编剧角度可以分为AI生成故事(AI Generated Storyline,简称AIGSL)与AI生成剧本(AI Generated Screenplay,简称AIGSP)。AIGSL研究始于20世纪60年代初,按照创作模式可以分为基于结构模型的故事生成、基于规则的故事生成和基于机器学习的故事生成三类程序。2022年底以来,以Chat GPT为代表的大语言模型将AIGC的内容从简单的AIGSL拓展到了AIGSP领域,同时催生了基于大语言模型的专用故事与剧本生成工具。大语言模型的故事和剧本生产存在事实错误、陈词滥调以及主观偏见等天然缺陷,但AIGSL与AIGSP已经开始实现产业化。目前的人工智能编剧创作绝大多数并不完全由AI创作,属于弱人工智能领域。中国电影工作者与软件工程师有必要利用机器学习等AI技术,学习中国传统叙事文本并总结其叙事风格,为具有中国叙事特色的编剧创作提供智能助力。

Nursing effect of narrative nursing intervention on postoperative patients with severe lung cancer

BACKGROUND Lung cancer is a common disease with high mortality,and psychological support is very important in the diagnosis and treatment of postoperative patients with cancer pain.AIM To explore the application effect of the narrative nursing method in postoperative lung cancer patients in the intensive care unit.METHODS A total of 120 patients diagnosed with lung cancer and experiencing cancer-related pain were randomly allocated into two groups:an observation group and a control group,each consisting of 60 cases.The control group was given routine analgesic and psychological care,while the research group applied the five-step narrative nursing method based on routine care,comparing the visual analogue scale scores,sleep status,anxiety and depression status,and quality of life of the two groups of patients before and after the intervention.RESULTS The pain scores,anxiety scores,and depression scores of the study group were lower than those of the control group after the intervention using the narrative nursing method,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Using narrative nursing methods to intervene in patients with lung cancer combined with cancerous pain can help patients to correctly recognize their disease,adjust their mentality,establish confidence,alleviate patients'subjective pain feelings,and improve their adverse emotions.

Cultural symbols,a manifestation of cities’cultural resources,are not only signs that frame concepts but also forms that express meanings.Exploring the international communication of cities from the perspective of symbols,this paper analyzes in depth how cities create their cultural symbols in the dynamic process of international communication in an era of symbol-based digital media,and how they develop their narratives and explain meanings through the dissemination of symbols when telling their stories to international audiences,thus enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of their international communication efforts.

Narrative nursing for negative emotions in patients with acute pancreatitis:Based on model construction and application

BACKGROUND Acute pancreatitis(AP),as a common acute abdomen disease,has a high incidence rate worldwide and is often accompanied by severe complications.Negative emotions lead to increased secretion of stress hormones,elevated blood sugar levels,and enhanced insulin resistance,which in turn increases the risk of AP and significantly affects the patient's quality of life.Therefore,exploring the intervention effects of narrative nursing programs on the negative emotions of patients with AP is not only helpful in alleviating psychological stress and improving quality of life but also has significant implications for improving disease outcomes and prognosis.AIM To construct a narrative nursing model for negative emotions in patients with AP and verify its efficacy in application.METHODS Through Delphi expert consultation,a narrative nursing model for negative emotions in patients with AP was constructed.A non-randomized quasi-experimental study design was used in this study.A total of 92 patients with AP with negative emotions admitted to a tertiary hospital in Nantong City of Jiangsu Province,China from September 2022 to August 2023 were recruited by convenience sampling,among whom 46 patients admitted from September 2022 to February 2023 were included in the observation group,and 46 patients from March to August 2023 were selected as control group.The observation group received narrative nursing plan,while the control group was given with routine nursing.Self-rating anxiety scale(SAS),self-rating depression scale(SDS),positive and negative affect scale(PANAS),caring behavior scale,patient satisfaction scale and 36-item short form health survey questionnaire(SF-36)were used to evaluate their emotions,satisfaction and caring behaviors in the two groups on the day of discharge,1-and 3-month following discharge.RESULTS According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,a total of 45 cases in the intervention group and 44 cases in the control group eventually recruited and completed in the study.On the day of discharge,the intervention group showed significantly lower scores of SAS,SDS and negative emotion(28.57±4.52 vs 17.4±4.44,P<0.001),whereas evidently higher outcomes in the positive emotion score,Caring behavior scale score and satisfaction score compared to the control group(P<0.05).Repeated measurement analysis of variance showed that significant between-group differences were found in time effect,inter-group effect and interaction effect of SAS and PANAS scores as well as in time effect and inter-group effect of SF-36 scores(P<0.05);the SF-36 scores of two groups at 3 months after discharge were higher than those at 1 month after discharge(P<0.05).CONCLUSION The application of narrative nursing protocols has demonstrated significant effectiveness in alleviating anxiety,ameliorating negative emotions,and enhancing satisfaction among patients with AP.

The Impact of Storyline Complexity on L2 Learners’Written Performance

Task-based Language Teaching(TBLT)research has provided ample evidence that cognitive complexity is an important aspect of task design that influences learner’s performance in terms of fluency,accuracy,and syntactic complexity.Despite the substantial number of empirical investigations into task complexity in journal articles,storyline complexity,one of the features of it,is scarcely investigated.Previous research mainly focused on the impact of storyline complexity on learners’oral performance,but the impact on learners’written performance is less investigated.Thus,this study aims at investigating the effects of narrative complexity of storyline on senior high school students’written performance,as displayed by its complexity,fluency,and accuracy.The present study has important pedagogical implications.That is,task design and assessment should make a distinction between different types of narrative tasks.For example,the task with single or dual storyline.Results on task complexity may contribute to informing the pedagogical choices made by teachers when prioritizing work with a specific linguistic dimension.

In the Heart of the Country,the second novel by J.M.Coetzee,has been traditionally read as a disembodied writing that focuses on the problem of writing per se instead of the reality.This paper contends that the work is actually a body narrative that explores the visceral pain suffered by Magda whose infertile body impedes her being a qualified subject.As the heroine in a postcolonial novel,Magda is not just a body that is restricted and constructed by the politics of the body,but also a thinking and writing body that consciously questions and resists the gendered bodily norms under whose yardstick her subjecthood is barred.Written in the metafictional manner,Magda’s narrative of the body is not just a record of her corporeal experience,but also a self-conscious negotiation with,and challenge of,the bodily norms under whose yardstick her body has been debased or,in terms of Judith Butler,abjected.Taking her female bodily experience as the starting point,Magda writes a feminine text that values passion,fluidity and non-linearity to disrupt the patriarchal discourse underpinned with logical reasoning.The feminine body narrative endeavors to achieve a new way of communication through which a reciprocal cross race/gender relationship might be established.

This interaction has a substantial impact on society and culture, thereby aiding in their reconstruction.

Exploring the Impact of Narrative Nursing on Anxiety, Depression, and Quality of Life in Middle-aged and Young Dialysis Patients

Objective:To explore the impact of narrative nursing on anxiety,depression,and quality of life in middle-aged and young dialysis patients.Method:Eighty-six middle-aged and young dialysis patients admitted from January 2023 to December 2023 were selected and divided into a control group and a study group,with 43 patients in each group.The control group received general nursing interventions,while the study group received narrative nursing in addition to the general interventions.The levels of anxiety and depression before and after the intervention were compared,and the quality-of-life scores of the two groups were analyzed.Results:After comprehensive intervention,the scores of both groups significantly decreased(P<0.05).After intervention,the scores of the study group were more significant compared to the control group(P<0.05).Compared with the control group,the quality-of-life score of the study group showed a significant upward trend,and this difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion:Comprehensive narrative nursing can effectively reduce anxiety in middle-aged and young dialysis patients,further enhance their quality of life,and is worth promoting in clinical practice.
