Active tuning of anisotropic phonon polaritons in natural van der Waals crystals with negative permittivity substrates and its application in energy transport

Phonon polaritons(PhPs)exhibit directional in-plane propagation and ultralow losses in van der Waals(vdW)crystals,offering new possibilities for controlling the flow of light at the nanoscale.However,these PhPs,including their directional propagation,are inherently determined by the anisotropic crystal structure of the host materials.Although in-plane anisotropic PhPs can be manipulated by twisting engineering,such as twisting individual vdW slabs,dynamically adjusting their propagation presents a significant challenge.The limited application of the twisted bilayer structure in bare films further restricts its usage.In this study,we present a technique in which anisotropic PhPs supported by bare biaxial vdW slabs can be actively tuned by modifying their local dielectric environment.Excitingly,we predict that the iso-frequency contour of PhPs can be reoriented to enable propagation along forbidden directions when the crystal is placed on a substrate with a moderate negative permittivity.Besides,we systematically investigate the impact of polaritonic coupling on near-field radiative heat transfer(NFRHT)between heterostructures integrated with different substrates that have negative permittivity.Our main findings reveal that through the analysis of dispersion contour and photon transmission coefficient,the excitation and reorientation of the fundamental mode facilitate increased photon tunneling,thereby enhancing heat transfer between heterostructures.Conversely,the annihilation of the fundamental mode hinders heat transfer.Furthermore,we find the enhancement or suppression of radiative energy transport depends on the relative magnitude of the slab thickness and the vacuum gap width.Finally,the effect of negative permittivity substrates on NFRHT along the[001]crystalline direction ofα-MoO3 is considered.The spectral band where the excited fundamental mode resulting from the negative permittivity substrates is shifted to the first Reststrahlen Band(RB 1)ofα-MoO_(3) and is widened,resulting in more significant enhancement of heat flux from RB 1.We anticipate our results will motivate new direction for dynamical tunability of the PhPs in photonic devices. 展开更多

Improved Algorithm for Efficient Extraction of Relaxation Parameter Values from Wideband Permittivity of Baijiu

The complex permittivity of baijiu varies with frequency,and dielectric spectroscopy has been used to evaluate the quality.To simplify the analysis and reduce the number of the parameters,a dielectric relaxation model is often used to fit the permittivity data.However,existing fitting methods such as the least squares and particle swarm optimization methods are often computationally complex and require preset initial values.Therefore,a simpler calculation method of the relaxation parameters considering the geometric characteristics of the permittivity spectrum is proposed.It is based on the relationship between the Cole-Cole relaxation parameters and the Cole-Cole diagram,which is fitted by a geometric method.First,the concepts of the Cole-Cole parameters and the diagram are introduced,and then the process of obtaining the parameters from the complex permittivity measurement data is explained.Taking baijiu with 56%alcohol by volume(ABV)as an example,the fitting is better than the least squares method and similar to the particle swarm optimization.This method is then used for the parameter fitting of baijiu with ABV of 42-52%,and the average error is less than 1%,demonstrating its wider applicability.Finally,a prediction model is used for baijiu with 53%ABV,and the error is only 1.51%.Hence,the method can be applied to the measurement of ABV of baijiu. 展开更多

This study explores an alternative to the classical use of direct methods, as water content and dry density measurements, for compaction quality control. For this purpose, the dielectric properties of lateritic materials are determined by radar method and are compared with the permittivity determined from the Topp formula and from the CRIM model. This approach allowed to establish a relationship between the geotechnical properties determined during compaction such as dry density, water content or porosity with dielectric permittivity. The obtained results made it possible to determine an optimum dielectric permittivity corresponding to the optimum dry density and the optimum water content that could be used for non-destructive in situ compaction testing. Such an approach should improve the implementation and effectiveness of in situ compaction quality control of geotechnical infrastructures. 展开更多

The pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coatings were fabricated on A1203 fiber fabrics by the method of chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The microstructures of A1203 fibers with and without PyC coatings were characterized by SEM and Raman spectroscopy. The influence of deposition time of PyC on the DC conductivity (ad) of A1203 filaments and complex permittivity of fabrics at X band (8.2-12.4 GHz) were investigated. The values of Crd and complex permittivity increase with increasing deposition time of PyC. The electron relaxation polarization and conductance loss were supposed to be contributed to the increase of ε' and ε", respectively. In addition, the reflection loss (RL) of fabrics was calculated. The results show that the microwave absorbing properties of Al2O3 fiber fabrics can be improved by PyC coatings. The best RL results are for 60 min-deposition sample, of which the minimum value is about -40.4 dB at about 9.5 GHz and the absorbing frequency band (AFB) is about 4 GHz. 展开更多

We take a finite dielectric photonic crystal as a homogeneous slab and have extracted the effective parameters. Our systematic study shows that the effective permittivity or permeability of dielectric photonic crystal is negative within a band gap region. This means that the band gap might act as ε-negative materials (ENMs) with ε 〈 0 and μ 〉 0, or μ-negative materials (MNMs) with ε 〉 0 and μ 〈 0. Moreover the effective parameters sensitively rely on size, surface termination, symmetry, etc. The effective parameters can be used to design full transmission tunnelling modes and amplify evanescent wave. Several cases are studied and the results show that dielectric photonic band gap can indeed mimic a single negative material (ENM or MNM) under some restrictions. 展开更多

Graphite oxide(GO) was prepared by the pressurized oxidation method and incorporated into polyimide(PI) matrix to fabricate high-k composite films by in-situ polymerization and subsequent thermal treatment. The results show that the as-prepared GO had good dispersion and compatibility in PI matrix due to the introduction of abundant oxygen-containing functional groups during the oxidation. The residual graphitic domains and the thermal treatment induced reduction of GO further enhanced the dielectric permittivity of the resulting GO–PI composites. The dielectric permittivity of the GO–PI composites exhibited a typical percolation behavior with a percolation threshold of 0.0347 of volume ratio and a critical exponent of 0.837. Near the percolation threshold, the dielectric permittivity of the GO–PI composite increased to 108 at 10~2 Hz and was 26 times that of the pure PI. 展开更多

This paper reports that amorphous magnetic microwires (Fe79Si16Bs) have been fabricated by a melt-extraction technique and have been annealed at 600℃ and 750℃ respectively. Differential scanning calorimeter measurements show that nanocrystalline magnetic phase (α-Fe) has been formed in the amorphous matrix when it was annealed at 600℃. Hard magnetic phase (Fe2B) was formed in the microwires annealed at 750℃, which increases the magnetic coercivity. Microwave permittivity and permeability are found to be dependent on the microstruetures. The permittivity fitting results show that multi Lorentzian dispersion processes exist. For microwires annealed at 750℃, their resonance peaks due to the domain wall movements and natural resonance are found higher than those of microwires annealed at 600℃. The microwave absorption performance of microwires annealed at 600℃ is found better than microwires annealed at 750℃. 展开更多

A broadband and ultra-thin absorber for solar cell application is designed. The absorber consists of three layers, and the difference is that the four split ring resonators made of metal gold are encrusted in the gallium arsenide (GaAs) plane in the top layer. The simulated results show that a perfect absorption in the region from 481.2 to 684.0THz can be obtained for either transverse electric or magnetic polarization wave due to the coupling effect between the material of GaAs and gold. The metamaterial is ultra-thin, having the total thickness of 56nm, which is less than one-tenth resonance wavelength, and the absorption coefficients at the three resonance wavelengths are above 90%. Moreover, the effective medium theory, electric field and surface current distributions are adopted to explain the physical mechanism of the absorption, and the permittivity sensing applications are also discussed. As a result, the proposed structure can be used in many areas, such as solar cell, sensors, and integrated photodetectors. 展开更多

In this paper, we present a new method to determine the relative permittivity of periodic stratified media using the iterative time-reversal method. Based on transmission line theory, the focal peak value of iterative time-reversal electro- magnetic waves, which contain information about the periodic stratified medium, is computed in pulse-echo mode. Using the relationship between the focal peak value and the relative permittivity of the periodic stratified medium, the relative permittivity can be obtained by measuring the focal peak value. Numerical simulations are conducted, and the results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach to the measurement of the relative permittivity of a periodic stratified medium. 展开更多

Early investigations of dielectric permittivity of rigid polyurethane foams at low frequencies were made on petrochemical-origin foams,mainly by means of parallel plate capacitors.In the present investigation biopolyol was synthesized from Latvia-grown rapeseeds’oil by the transesterification method with triethanolamine,in an environmentally friendly process,without emission of harmful substances,at temperatures 175℃±5℃.Rigid,closed-cell rapeseed oil polyol polyurethane biofoams and petrochemical foams were made ensuring content of the renewable rapeseed oil polyol in ready foams 27 wt.%–29 wt.%.Dielectric permittivity of the polyurethane foams and the underlying monolithic petrochemical-origin polyurethane and biopolyurethane was measured with a non-destructive dielectric spectrometer equipped with a capacitive sensor of one-side access type at 16 discrete frequencies distributed geometrically over the band 10 Hz,…,330 kHz.Permittivity value of the gaseous phase in the closed-cells was estimated to beεg≈1.001 that corresponds to the values,characteristic for the most of gases.Dielectric permittivity of petrochemical polyurethane foams and the mentioned biofoams was compared with permittivity of polyurethane foams from industrial producers Sika JSC and General Plastics Manufacturing Co.Polyurethane foams of the developed formulation exhibit competitive,low dielectric permittivity,not exceeding that of the foams from industrial producers:petrochemical foams up to 550 kg/m^(3) and the mentioned biofoams,comprising the renewable rapeseed oil polyol,up to densities 230–250 kg/m^(3).Considering petrochemical-origin polyurethane foams as a heterogeneous media“Polymer—gaseous phase”,the applicability of the rule of mixture and Maxwell–Garnett equation to model mathematically the dependence of effective dielectric permittivity on the volume fraction of phases was showed. 展开更多

For the first time,the effect of ions on complex conductivity and permittivity of dusty plasma at Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes(PMSE)altitude is analyzed.Because of ions higher mass and smaller thermal velocity,generally,their effects are not considered in the study of electromagnetic properties of dusty plasmas.In this study,we modified the equations of conductivity and permittivity by adding the effect of ions.In the PMSE altitude region between 80 and 90 km,a local reduction in electron density(i.e.,an electron biteout),is produced by electron absorption onto dust particles.The bite-out condition contains high dust density and smaller electron density.From simulation results in comparatively strong bite-out conditions,we found that the ion effects on conductivity become significant with smaller dust size,lower electron temperature,and lower neutral density.For comparatively weak bite-out conditions,the ion effects on conductivity become significant with larger dust size,higher electron temperature,and higher neutral density.On the other hand,for different dust sizes,electron temperatures and neutral density,the ion effects on complex permittivity become significant only in very strong bite-out conditions.Based on these simulation results,we conclude that,in the absence of electron bite-out conditions,the effect of ions on complex conductivity and permittivity is not significant and can be ignored.However,during bite-out conditions,the effect of ions becomes significant and cannot be ignored because it significantly changes the conductivity and permittivity of dusty plasmas. 展开更多

The relative permittivity and conductivity of tumor at 1.6 GHz were 17.5% and 16.2% higher than those of mammary gland tissue, respectively. In invasive ductal carcinoma of scirrhous type, 8 out of 64 had higher relative permittivity and conductivity of mammary gland than those of tumor. However, when evaluated by the Debye parameter considering the frequency dependence of the tissue, it is rare that </span><i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">ε</span></i><sub><span style="font-family:Verdana;">∞</span></sub><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> and Δ</span><i><span style="font-family:Verdana;">ε</span></i><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> of cancer are simultaneously lower than those of mammary gland. The relative permittivity and conductivity of fibroadenoma are almost the same as those of mammary glands. The relative permittivity and conductivity of each tissue showed strong linearity. The dielectric permittivity of cementitious materials during 24 hours hydration period at a frequency of 2.45 GHz using a network analyzer with open-ended probe technique was measured. Influences of water-to-cementitious ratios, cement types, pozzolans and aggregate types are taken into consideration. The results show that dielectric permittivity is strongly affected by initial water-to-cementitious ratio and the rate of hydration reaction which can be changed by fineness of cement (Types 1 and 3), pozzolan materials and aggregates (river sand with/without crushed limestone rock). Dielectric permittivity is relatively high and remains constant during the dormant period, after that it decreases rapidly when the hydration reaction resumes and continues to decrease during the acceleratory period. 展开更多

The cores from the Xinjiang oilfield were measured by using the frequency-swept method at different salinities and saturations. The effects of salinity, frequency, porosity and saturation on core permittivity were investigated. The relationship of core permittivity versus water saturation and the relationship of dry core permittivity versus porosity were obtained. The permittivity values of rock matrix and oil were obtained at a frequency of 47 MHz and 200 MHz, and would provide guidance for the interpretation of dual frequency dielectric logging data. 展开更多

An analytical model of the power metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor(MOSFET)with high permittivity insulator structure(HKMOS)with interface charge is established based on superposition and developed for optimization by charge compensation.In light of charge compensation,the disturbance aroused by interface charge is efficiently compromised by introducing extra charge for maximizing breakdown voltage(BV)and minimizing specific ON-resistance(R_(on,sp)).From this optimization method,it is very efficient to obtain the design parameters to overcome the difficulty in implementing the R_(on,sp)–BV trade-off for quick design.The analytical results prove that in the HKMOS with positive or negative interface charge at a given length of drift region,the extraction of the parameters is qualitatively and quantitatively optimized for trading off BV and Ron,sp with JFET effect taken into account. 展开更多

When x = 0, for LaMnO3 oxide, the complex permeability keeps a constant number, μ'τ≌ 0.8, μ"τ ≌ 1.0 in the frequency range of 50 - 1800 MHz; the complex permittivity decreases as frequency increases, the ε'τ decreases from 33 to 19 and the ε"τ decreases from 65 to 5. 展开更多

Based on polarization mechanisms, such as electronic, ionic and orientational polarizations, a new equation for dielectric permittivity of soil is proposed to interpret the dielectric behavior of a mixture like soil, in terms of polarization process of its components and the interactions between its components. The dielectric permittivity is expressed in terms of a fre-quency-dependent part and a frequency-independent part. These two parts correspond to polarizations occurred at different fre-quency range. It is a new volumetric mixing model with theoretical background. Based on time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements of saturated soil samples and test data from literature, comparisons of this model with some well established mixing models show that the curves for saturated sand soils and slurries resulted from the new equation, which agree well with TDR measurements, are close to those calculated from Birchak's model. 展开更多

Ni/Au Schottky contacts on AlN/GaN and AlGaN/GaN heterostructures are fabricated. Based on the measured current-voltage and capacitance-voltage curves, the polarization sheet charge density and relative permittivity are analyzed and calculated by self-consistently solving Schrodinger's and Poisson's equations. It is found that the values of relative permittivity and polarization sheet charge density of AlN/GaN diode are both much smaller than the ones of AlGaN/GaN diode, and also much lower than the theoretical values. Moreover, by fitting the measured forward 1-V curves, the extracted dislocations existing in the barrier layer of the AlN/GaN diode are found to be much more than those of the AlGaN/GaN diode. As a result, the conclusion can be made that compared with AlGaN/GaN diode the Schottky metal has an enhanced influence on the strain of the extremely thinner AlN barrier layer, which is attributed to the more dislocations. 展开更多
