This study proposed a random Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method for analyzing the post-failure behavior of landslides, which is based on the Karhunen-Loeve(K-L) expansion, the non-Newtonian fluid model, and the OpenMP parallel framework. Then, the applicability of this method was validated by comparing the generated random field with theoretical result and by simulating the post-failure process of an actual landslide.Thereafter,an illustrative landslide example was created and simulated to obtain the spatial variability effect of internal friction angle on the post-failure behavior of landslides under different coefficients of variation(COVs) and correlation lengths(CLs).As a conclusion, the reinforcement with materials of a larger friction angle can reduce the runout distance and impact the force of a landslide. As the increase of COV,the distribution range of influence zones also increases, which indicates that the deviation of influence zones becomes large. In addition, the correlation length in Monte Carlo simulations should not be too small, otherwise the variation range of influence zones will be underestimated. 展开更多

A calamitous landslide happened at 22:00 on September 1,2014 in the Yunyang area of Chongqing City, southwest China, enforcing the evacuation of 508 people and damaging 23 buildings. The landslide volume comprised 1.44 million m^(3) of material in the source area and 0.4 million m^(3) of shoveled material. The debris flow runout extended 400 m vertically and 1600 m horizontally. The Xianchi reservoir landslide event has been investigated as follows:(1)samples collected from the main body of landslide were carried out using GCTS ring shear apparatus;(2)the parameters of shear and pore water pressure have been measured;and(3)the post-failure characteristics of landslide have been analyzed using the numerical simulation method. The excess pore-water pressure and erosion in the motion path are considered to be the key reasons for the long-runout motion and the scale-up of landslides, such as that at Xianchi, were caused by the heavy rainfall. The aim of this paper is to acquired numerical parameters and the basic resistance model, which is beneficial to improve simulation accuracy for hazard assessment for similar to potentially dangerous hillslopes in China and elsewhere. 展开更多

The recognition, repetition and prediction of the post-failure motion process of long-runout landslides are key scientific problems in the prevention and mitigation of geological disasters. In this study,a new numerical method involving LPF3D based on a multialgorithm and multiconstitutive model was proposed to simulate long-runout landslides with high precision and efficiency. The following results were obtained:(a)The motion process of landslides showed a steric effect with mobility, including gradual disintegration and spreading. The sliding mass can be divided into three states(dense, dilute and ultradilute)in the motion process, which can be solved by three dynamic regimes(friction, collision, and inertial);(b)Coupling simulation between the solid grain and liquid phases was achieved, focusing on drag force influences;(c)Different algorithms and constitutive models were employed in phase-state simulations. The volume fraction is an important indicator to distinguish different state types and solid‒liquid ratios. The flume experimental results were favorably validated against long-runout landslide case data;and(d)In this method, matched dynamic numerical modeling was developed to better capture the realistic motion process of long-runout landslides, and the advantages of continuum media and discrete media were combined to improve the computational accuracy and efficiency. This new method can reflect the realistic physical and mechanical processes in long-runout landslide motion and provide a suitable method for risk assessment and pre-failure prediction. 展开更多

Coal pillar design has historically assigned a factor of safety(Fo S) or stability factor(SF) according to their estimated strength and the assumed overburden load acting on them. Acceptable Fo S values have been assigned based on past mining experience or a statistical link between Fo S and probability of failure(Po F). Pillar width-to-height(w/h) ratio has long been established as having a material influence on both pillar strength and its potential failure mode. However, there has been significant disagreement on using both factor of safety(Fo S) and w/h as part of pillar system stability criterion, as compared to using Fo S in isolation. This paper will argue that there are valid technical reasons to bring w/h ratio into system stability criteria(other than its influence on pillar strength), as it is related to the post-failure stiffness of the pillar, as measured in situ, and its interaction with overburden stiffness. When overburden stiffness is also brought into pillar system stability considerations, two issues emerge. The first is the width-todepth(W/D) ratio of the panel and whether it is sub-critical or super-critical from a surface subsidence perspective. The second relates to a re-evaluation of pillar Fo S based on whether the pillar is in an elastic or non-elastic(i.e., post-yield) state in its as-designed condition, as this is relevant to maintaining overburden stiffness at the highest possible level. The significance of the model is the potential to maximise both reserve recovery and mining efficiencies without any discernible increase in geotechnical risk, particularly in thick seams and higher depth of cover mining situations. At a time when mining economics are, at best, marginal, removing potentially unnecessary design conservatism is of interest to all mine operators and is an important topic for discussion amongst the geotechnical community. 展开更多

The cohesion weakening and friction strengthening(CWFS)model for rock reveals the strength components mobilization process during progressive brittle failure process of rock, which is very helpful in understanding mechanical properties of rock. However, the used incremental cyclic loading−unloading compression test for the determination of strength components is very complicated, which limits the application of CWFS model. In this paper, incremental cyclic loading−unloading compression test was firstly carried out to study the evolution of deformation and the strength properties of Beishan granite after various temperatures treated under different confining pressures. We found the axial and lateral unloading modulus are closely related to the applied stress and damage state of rock.Based on these findings,we can accurately determine the plastic strain during the entire failure process using conventional tri-axial compression test data.Furthermore,a strength component(cohesive and frictional strength)determination method was developed using conventional triaxial compression test.Using this method,we analyzed the variation of strength mobilization and deformation properties of Beishan granite after various temperatures treated. At last,a non-simultaneous strength mobilization model for thermally treated granite was obtained and verified by numerical simulation, which demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed strength determination method. 展开更多

The collapse of the tunnel face is a prevalent geological disaster in tunnelling. This study employs a three-dimensional(3D)material point method(MPM)to simulate the dynamic collapse process and post-failure mechanisms of the tunnel face. The specific focus is on the scenario where the auxiliary air pressure balanced shield with a partially filled chamber is shut down.To assess the suitability of the 3D MPM,numerical solutions are compared with the results from small-scale experimental tests.Subsequently,a series of large-scale numerical simulations is conducted to explore the dynamic collapse characteristics of the tunnel face induced by the shutdown of the EPB shield under various support air pressures and cutter head conditions. The temporal evolution of the accumulated soil masses in the soil chamber and ground responses under different support air pressures, cutter head types and opening ratios are discussed. In particular, the associated surface subsidence due to the tunnel face collapse is determined and compared with empirical solutions.Numerical results confirm the applicability of the 3D MPM for simulating the large-scale tunnel face collapse scenarios, spanning from small to large deformation analysis. 展开更多
