A new type of electrical prefabricated vertical drain (ePVD) and a new electroosmotic drainage system are suggested to allow the application of the new method. This combined method is then field-tested and compared with the conventional vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method. The monitoring and foundation test results show that the new method induces a settlement 20% larger than that of the conventional vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method in the same treatment period, and saves approximately half of the treatment time compared with the vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method according to the finite element prediction of the settlement. The proposed method also increases the vane shear strength of the soil significantly. The bearing capacity of the ground improved by use of the new proposed method raises 118%. In comparison, there is only a 75% rise when using the vacuum combined with surcharge preloading method during the same reinforcement period. All results indicate that the proposed combined method is effective and suitable for reinforcing the soft clay ground. Besides, the voltage applied between the anode and cathode increases exponentially versus treatment time when the output current of power supplies is kept constant. Most of the voltage potential in electroosmosis is lost at electrodes, leaving smaller than 50% of the voltage to be effectively transmitted into the soil.展开更多

The graphite tiles are mounted on the heat sink using screw bolts which have been preloaded to produce a clamp force. The clamp force is very important to keep the graphite tiles tightly on the surface of the heat sink so that the heat flux crosses this contacting surface in a small thermal resistor. Without the clamp force, the small gap between the graphite tiles and the heat sink will make it impossible for thermal power to be carried away by cooling water. Some bolts may even fall off with the loss of clamp force. From the mathematical models, the loss process of the clamp force has been studied. Research results explain how the different thermal expansions of three members of the screw joint makes the clamp force decrease to zero under temperature rise and external force, and how the stiffness affects the relation between the clamp force and temperature. The research also gives the critical temperature at which the clamp force can remain above zero. Analysis results indicate that the current screw joints are almost destined to lose their clamp force during the running time of EAST, so the bolt joints should be redesigned in order to improve its reliability.展开更多

A laboratory test cell was designed and applied to evaluate the vacuum preloading combined electroosmosis. Several factors were taken into consideration, including the directions of the electroosmotic current and water induced by vacuum preloading and the replenishment of groundwater from the surrounding area. The results indicate that electroosmosis together with vacuum preloading improve the soil strength greatly, with an increase of approximately 60%, and reduce the water content of the soil on the basis of consolidation of vacuum preloading, howeve~ further settlement is not obvious with only 1.7 mm. The reinforcement effect of vacuum preloading combined electroosmosis is better than that of electroosmosis after vacuum preloading. Elemental analysis using X-ray fluorescence proves that the soil strengthening during electroosmotic period in this work is mainly caused by electroosmosis-induced electrochemical reactions, the concentrations of Al2O3 in the VPCEO region increase by 2.2%, 1.5%, and 0.9% at the anode, the midpoint between the electrodes, and the cathode, respectively.展开更多

The axial preloading stiffness was treated as the sum of the spindle modal stiffness and the framework elastic stiffness, based on a novel concept that magnitude of preloads can be controlled by measuring the resonant frequency of a spindle system. By employing an example of a certain type of aircraft simulating rotary table, the modal stiffness was measured on the Agilent 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer by experimental modal analysis. The equivalent elastic stiffness was simulated by both finite element analysis in ANSYS? and a curve fitting in MATLAB?. Results showed that the static preloading stiffness of the spindle was 7.2125×107 N/m, and that the optimal preloading force was 120.0848 N. Practical application proved the feasibility of our method.展开更多

Three groups of tests were conducted on the silty clay from Qinhuai River in Nanjing, China. The model is able to apply vacuum pressure at the bottom of the soil layer and a direct current electric field simultaneously. It is also possible to measure the pore pressures at different depths of soil column, and the changes in settlement and volume with the elapsed time. In this study, the vacuum preloading method, vacuum preloading applied at the bottom (VAB method), was applied and the cathodes were installed beneath the soil layer. The results obtained indicate substantial reduction in water content, and increases in dry density and undrained shear strength in comparison with those obtained by the vacuum preloading only, particularly at the positions close to the anode. The combined method utilizes the vertical drainage flow created by the electroosmosis integrating the horizontal drainage flow created mostly by the vacuum pressure. The total drainage flow can be calculated as a result of the vertical drainage flow by electroosmosis only and the horizontal drainage flow by the vacuum preloading only. The way of placement of the cathode and the anode in the combined method also overcomes the disadvantage of EOM method itself, i.e. the appearance of cracks between the anode and the surrounding soil. Moreover, it is observed that the vacuum preloading plays a primary role in earlier stage in deduction of free pore water; meanwhile, the electroosmotic method is more efficient in later stage for absorbing water in the diffused double layers of soil.展开更多

Vacuum preloading combined with vertical drains has been proved to be an effective method in the treatment of soft foundation. A three-dimensional numerical analysis of the coupled methods was presented, in which the smear zone and the well resistance were taken into account. The variations of the basic soil parameters including the permeability coefficient and the coefficient of volume compressibility were considered in the numerical model. The result of the numerical model was then compared to the measured value. The results indicate that the decrease of coefficient of volume compressibility accelerates the consolidation of the soil while the influence of hydraulic conductivity is insignificant. A cube drain presents the closest result to the real situation compared to the other equivalent methods of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD). The case study indicates that the numerical model with variation of soil parameters is closer to the measured value than the numerical model without variation of soil parameters.展开更多

Previous studies demonstrated that propofol injection pain was alleviated by applying nitroglycerin ointment to the skin of injection site, which inspires us to test whether venous vasodilation induced by fluid preload could alleviate the pain. Different types or volumes of fluid preload were compared. 200 ASA Ⅰ-Ⅱ adult patients were randomly assigned to five groups of 40 each. A 20 G cannula was established on the dorsum or wrist of the hand. When fluid preload given with Plasma-Lyte A 100 m L(P100 group), 250 m L(P250 group), 500 m L(P500 group), 0.9% saline 500 m L(N500 group) or Gelofusine 500 m L(G500 group) was completed within 30 min, respectively, Propofol(0.5 mg/kg, 1%) was injected at a rate of 0.5 m L/s. A blind investigator assessed the pain using a four-point scale. Incidence of pain in P100, P250, and P500 groups was 87.5%, 57.5% and 35%, respectively(P〈0.05). The median pain intensity score was significantly lower in P500 group than that in P250 and P100 groups(P〈0.05 and P〈0.01, respectively). Comparison of the effect of different types of solution preload indicated that the highest incidence of pain was in N500 group(62.5%)(N500 vs. P500, P=0.014; N500 vs. G500, P=0.007). The median pain intensity score in N500 group was higher than that in P500 group(P〈0.05) and G500 group(P〈0.05). There was no significant difference between P500 and G500 groups. It is suggested that Plasma-Lyte A or Gelofusine preload with 500 m L before propofol injection is effective in alleviating propofol-induced pain.展开更多

The experimental parameters include rebar ratios, number of plies of CFRP laminates and preload level at the time of strengthening. Theoretical analysis was also carried out to explain the experimental phenomena and results. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that the preload level has more influence on the stiffness and deflection of the strengthened beam, both at post-cracking and post-yielding stage, than that on the yielding and ultimate flexural strength of the strengthened beam. The main failure mode of CFRP-strengthened beam is the intermediate crack-induced debonding of CFRP laminates, provided that the development length of CFRP laminates and shear capacity of the beam are sufficient.展开更多

This study presents the analytical solution of vertical drains with vacuum combined surcharge preloading. The surcharge was considered to be time-dependent preloading due to its reflection of the real situation. Moreover, the free strain, instead of equal strain hypothesis of the surface, was adopted for the mathematical rigor. Both vertical and horizontal drainages, along with the well resistance were considered.Besides, the time-dependent surcharge preloading was resolved with the impulse theorem which has been presented in the study, and the solutions for pore water pressure and degree of consolidation were derived by applying the approach of separation of variables.Furthermore, the solution is compared with previous solutions and numerical solutions, and the results verify the correctness of the proposed model.展开更多

文摘To assess the effectiveness of vacuum preloading combined electroosmotic strengthening of ultra-soft soil and study the mechanism of the process, a comprehensive experimental investigation was performed. Elemental analysis using X-ray fluorescence proves that the soil strengthening during electroosmotic period in this work is mainly caused by electroosmosis-induced electrochemical reactions, the concentrations of Al2O3 in the VPCEO region increase by 2.2%, 1.5%, and 0.9% at the anode, the midpoint between the electrodes, and the cathode, respectively.

文摘Problems continue to be encountered concerning the traditional vacuum preloading method in field during the treatment of newly deposited dredger fills. In this paper,an improved multiple-vacuum preloading method was developed to consolidate newly dredger fills that are hydraulically placed in seawater for land reclamation in Lingang Industrial Zone of Tianjin City,China. With this multiplevacuum preloading method, the newly deposited dredger fills could be treated effectively by adopting a novel moisture separator and a rapid improvement technique without sand cushion.A series of model tests was conducted in the laboratory for comparing the results from the multiple-vacuum preloading method and the traditional one.Ten piezometers and settlement plates were installed to measure the variations in excess pore water pressures and moisture content, and vane shear strength was measured at different positions. The testing results indicate that water dischargeetime curves obtained by the traditional vacuum preloading method can be divided into three phases:rapid growth phase, slow growth phase, and steady phase.According to the process of fluid flow concentrated along tiny ripples and building of larger channels inside soils during the whole vacuum loading process, the fluctuations of pore water pressure during each loading step are divided into three phases:steady phase, rapid dissipation phase, and slow dissipation phase. An optimal loading pattern which could have a best treatment effect was proposed for calculating the water discharge and pore water pressure of soil using the improved multiple-vacuum preloading method. For the newly deposited dredger fills at Lingang Industrial Zone of Tianjin City, the best loading step was 20 kPa and the loading of 40-50 k Pa produced the highest drainage consolidation. The measured moisture content and vane shear strength were discussed in terms of the effect of reinforcement, both of which indicate that the multiple-vacuum preloading method has a better treatment effect not only in decreasing the moisture content and increasing the bearing capacity, but also in increasing the process uniformity at different depths of foundation.
文摘This paper presents a new theoretical model to determine the optimal axial preload of a spindle system, for challenging the traditional method which relies heavily on experience of engineers. Practical application proved the feasibility of our method.
文摘A laboratory test was performed to assess the effectiveness of vacuum preloading incorporated with electroosmotic (EOM) treatment on silty clay (combined method) for reclamation projects like new disposal ponds, where the horizontal electrode configurations beneath the soil layer were possible and the drainage pipes and the prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) system could be easily installed in advance before the sludge dragged from sea bed or river bed was filled into the site. Moreover, it is observed that the vacuum preloading plays a primary role in earlier stage in deduction of free pore water; meanwhile, the electroosmotic method is more efficient in later stage for absorbing water in the diffused double layers of soil.

文摘This study compares the strength characteristics of rocks anchored by NPR bolts and ordinary bolts with varied preloads, based on the mechanical properties of NPR bolts(with a negative Poisson’s ratio). The results show that the uniaxial compressive stress-strain curve of ordinary anchored rocks exhibits noticeable abrupt changes. After reaching peak strength, the bolt breaks, whereas the stress-strain curve of NPR-anchored rocks is smoother. The NPR bolt enters the stage of continuous resistance after reaching maximal strength and does not break. As the preload increases, the strength of the anchored rock grows linearly.A calculation equation for the strength of the anchored rock is proposed based on the preload. The theoretical equation fits the test results well, and the fitted parameters show that NPR bolts can better increase the strength of the rock. The concept of dynamic toughness UC of anchored rock is proposed to reflect the comprehensive mechanical properties of anchored rock, including strength and plasticity. As the preload increases, the UC of ordinary anchored rock first decreases and then increases, while the UC of the NPR anchored rock does not change significantly with the preload when the strain is small, and the UC increases with the increase of the preload when the strain is large.

文摘The rapid development of high-speed transportation infrastructure such as highway and high-speed railway has resulted in the advancement of soft soil improvement techniques. The case study indicates that the numerical model with variation of soil parameters is closer to the measured value than the numerical model without variation of soil parameters.
文摘Injection pain of propofol remains a common clinical problem. It is suggested that Plasma-Lyte A or Gelofusine preload with 500 m L before propofol injection is effective in alleviating propofol-induced pain.

文摘Eighteen reinforced concrete beams, including 16 beams strengthened with CFRP laminate at different levels of preload and 2 control beams, were tested to investigate the influence of preload level on flexural behavior of CFRP-strengthened RC beam. The main failure mode of CFRP-strengthened beam is the intermediate crack-induced debonding of CFRP laminates, provided that the development length of CFRP laminates and shear capacity of the beam are sufficient.

文摘Vacuum combined surcharge preloading is an effective method which has been used in ground treatment. Both vertical and horizontal drainages, along with the well resistance were considered.Besides, the time-dependent surcharge preloading was resolved with the impulse theorem which has been presented in the study, and the solutions for pore water pressure and degree of consolidation were derived by applying the approach of separation of variables.Furthermore, the solution is compared with previous solutions and numerical solutions, and the results verify the correctness of the proposed model.

文摘Existing research on the competitive failure relationship, failure mechanism, and influencing factors of bolt loosening and fatigue under different preloads is insufficient. This study analyzes the competitive failure relationship between bolt loosening and fatigue under composite excitation through competitive failure tests of bolt loosening and fatigue under different preloads. The results indicated that the failure mode of the bolt is only related to the load ratio(R)and is unrelated to the initial preload and excitation amplitude, which only determine the failure life of the bolt. The small axial loads of composite excitation can restrain bolt failure, and the significant degree of this restraining effect is differ-ent for different preloads.Subsequently,a fracture analysis of the bolt was performed to verify the competitive failure relationship of the bolt from a microscopic perspective, and the competitive failure mechanism of the bolt was deter-mined.Based on the findings,we propose a calculation equation for the optimal preload of 8.8 grade high-strength bolts that can serve as a reference for engineering applications.

文摘The heat generation behaviors of fatigue crack are deeply investigated under different preload forces combing numerical simulation and experiment.Firstly,a multi-contact simulation model is applied to stimulate the crack surfaces contact and the horn-sample contact under ultrasonic excitation for calculating the temperature fields. Then, the ultrasonic infrared thermography testing and the microscope testing are carried out for the heat generation and the plastic deformation behaviors of crack region under different preload forces. On this basis,an indirect observation method based on dots distribution is proposed to estimate the plastic deformation on crack contact surfaces. The obtained results show that the temperature rise of crack region increases with the increase of preload force when the preload force is less than 250 N,while the temperature rise rapidly declines due to the plastic deformation on crack contact surfaces and the inhibition effect when the preload force is 280 N.Moreover, the plastic deformation does not lead to the crack propagation, but reduces the detection repeatability of fatigue crack. This work provides an effective method for optimizing testing conditions in practical testing processes, which will be helpful to the establishment of testing standards for batches of test objects in ultrasonic infrared thermography testing.

文摘To increase the machine accuracy by improving the stiffness of bearings,a preload was applied to bearings.A variable preload technology was necessary to perform machining processes in both low and high speed regions. An automatic variable preload device was fabricated using an eccentric mass.By installing the fabricated device on a spindle, the effect of the automatic variable preload device on the performance of the spindle was analyzed. In the results of the vibration measurement of the spindle, the vibration is increased by 20%-37% according to measurement points at the maximum rotation speed of 5 000 r/min.And,in the results of the noise measurement of the spindle, the spindle rotation speed is increased by about 1.9% and 1.5% at the front and side of the spindle, respectively.Based on the results of this analysis,an improved method that reduces such effects on the performance of the spindle is proposed.

文摘Vacuum preloading has been widely used to improve soft soils in coastal areas of China. An increasing amount of evidence from field operations has shown that conventional vacuum preloading is prone to clogging in prefabricated vertical drains(PVDs)and demands a large volume of sand fills. In recent years,air-boosted vacuum preloading has been developed to overcome these limitations;however, this method still requires more data to verify its performance. In this study,a field test for air-boosted vacuum preloading was conducted, and a large-strain two-dimensional(2D)finite element(FE)model was developed and validated against the field test data. Then,a series of FE parametric analyses was performed to assess key factors,i.e.the air injection pressure, the injection spacing, and the characteristics of cyclic injection, which affect the performance of the air-boosted vacuum preloading. The results showed that the ground settlement and lateral displacement of the soils increased due to an increase in the injection pressure,a decrease in the injection spacing,or increases in the number and duration of the injection cycles.Based on the parametric analyses,an empirical formula for ground settlement prediction was proposed and compared with a case history reported in the literature, showing good agreement.
