The influence of rare earth metals and heat treatment on the microstructure and performance of M42 steel has been investigated by means of an optical microscope OM scanning electron microscope SEM energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS transmission electron microscope TEM electron back-scatter diffraction EBSD and X-ray diffraction XRD . The results show that M2 C is the prevailing type of eutectic carbides in M42 steel. After modification with rare earth metals M2 C eutectic carbides change from the ordered lamellar structure into a circular structure.Despite different morphologies the two carbides present the same characteristics of microstructure and growth orientation.Compared with lamellar carbides M2 C carbides with the circular structure are much easier to decompose and spheroidize after heating which remarkably refines the carbide dimensions. The refined carbides improve the supersaturation of alloying elements in martensite and increase the hardness of M42 steel by 1.5 HRC. 展开更多

The performance of LiNi/γ-Al2O3 catalysts modified by rare earth metal oxide (La2O3 or CeO2) packed on BCFNO membrane reactor was discussed for the partial oxidation of methane (POM) in coke oven gas (COG) at 875 ℃. The NiO/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with different amounts of La2O3 and CeO2 were prepared with the same preparation method and under the same condition in order to compare the reaction performance (oxygen permeation, CH4 conversion, H2 and CO selectivity) on the membrane reactor. The results show that the oxygen permeation flux increased significantly with LiNiREOx/γ-Al2O3 (RE = La or Ce) catalysts by adding the element of rare earth especially the Ce during the POM in COG. Such as, the Li15wt%CeO29wt%NiO/γ-Al2O3 catalyst with an oxygen permeation flux of 24.71 ml·cm^-2·min^-1 and a high CH4 conversion was obtained in 875 ℃. The resulted high oxygen permeation flux may be due to the added Ce that inhibited the strong interaction between Ni and Al2O3 to form the NiAl2O4 phase. In addition, the introduction of Ce leads up to an important property of storing and releasing oxygen. 展开更多

A Cu/Al galvanic couple was established to study the influence of the oxidantKMnO_4 on the film-forming process of rare earth metal (REM) conversion coating on LY12 aluminumalloy. It is found that the galvanic couple simulative experiment accords with the actual immersion, and it can be substantially used to simulate the behavior of LY12 aluminum alloy in thefilm-forming process. It is showed that the formation of the coating is quickened in CeCl_3 solutioncontaining KMnO_4 compared with that not containing KMnO_4. XPS results reveal that the coatingformed on cathode is composed of oxide or hydroxide of Ce and Mn, so the mechanism of formation ofREM conversion coating changes when KMnO4 is added. 展开更多

The studies were made on the preparation processes of the rare earth metal and alloy target materials and their characterization. In this work the rare earth metals were prepared by electrolysis of the oxide in molten salt for Nd metal and metallothermic reduction of the fluorides for Gd, Tb, Dy metals. After vacuum refining and distillation purification these rare earth metals were used for manufacturing the element targets, mosaic targets and as the starting materials of preparing the rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloy targets. The four kinds of Dy-FeCo, NdDy-FeCo, Tb-FeCo and GdTb-FeCo alloy targets with diameter of 100 mm and thickness of 3 mm were prepared using powder metallurgical technique. The oxygen content and microstructure of the prepared RE-TM cast alloys and sintered targets were analyzed. The features and requirements of the RE-TM alloy sputtering target materials were also discussed. 展开更多

The microstruetural transformation of steels:20SiMn2V,20SiMn2VRE,40SiMn2V and 40SiMn2VRE during quenching and tempering have been examined by TEM,X-ray diffraction and dilatometer. It was shown that the addition of rare earth metals not only can refine the austenite grains of the low or medium carbon steels and packet of lath martensite and lath size, lower the M_s temperature, but can also raise the relative percentage of disloca- tion substructure of martensite in medium carbon steel, but there is little effect on volume frac- tion and thermal stability of retained austenite quenching and tempering structure of low or medium carbon steels. The rare earth metals may remarkably inhibit the decomposition of low carbon martensite during low temperature tempering, retard the precipitation of cementite plates in lath grains and delay the spheroidization of carbides. They may also restrain obvious- ly the precipitation and spheroidization of cementite in medium carbon martensite during high temperature tempering. 展开更多

Proton ligand stability constants of hydroxybenzoic acid containing nitro group (2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid and 3-Hydroxy-4- nitrobenzoic acid) were determined through lrving-Rossoti pH titration technique. The stability constants of rare earth metal chelates containing 2-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid and 3-Hydroxy-4-nitrobenzoic acid as ligands were studied in aqueous medium at different ionic strength (p=0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 mol/L) and temperatures (298, 308 and 318± 0.1 K). The values of stability constant were evaluated through different computational methods like successive approximation, least square treatment, correction term method, and convergence method. The observed value of thermodynamic parameters (△G°, △H° and △S°) favors the complex formation between metal and ligands. The order of stabifity constant was found to be Pr(III)〈Nd(III)〈Sm(III)〈Tb(III)〈Ho(III)〈Er(III) as reported by Stagg and Powell. 展开更多

The effects of rare earth metal salts (REMs), cerium(IV) salt and lanthanum (III) salt, on the property of anodized coating of LD10 aluminum alloy are studied by corrosion tests including neutral salt spray test and copper accelerated acetic acid immersion test, polarization curves measurement, energy dispersion analyzer of X-Ray(EDAX) analysis, and in situ ellipsometry. The results show that the addition of either of the two REMs in anodizing solution hardly changes the composition of an anodized coating, while increases the thickness of barrier part and reduces the porosity of porous part, which contributed to the improvement of the corrosion resistance of the anodized coating. The results also demonstrate that the effect of cerium salt was better than that of lanthanum salt. 展开更多

The slow tensile tests, dynamic hydrogen charging tensile tests and hydrogen evolution tests after hydrogen charging were used to study the effects of rare earth metal(REM)on hydrogen behaviour in a steel 16Mn(St.52).The ratios of RE/S were chosen as 0,0.7,2.2 and 7.7,respectively.It was shown that the steel with RE/S = 2.2 give a lower hydrogen embrittlement susceptibility than others. The steels without REM can adsorb much more amount of hydrogen than that with REM under the same hydrogen charging conditions. And the amount of adsorbed hydrogen for the foriner can be evolved easier than that for the latter at room temperature,50℃ and 80℃,respectively.The experimental results were explained by the trap theory of hydrogen, the short-circuit diffusion paths in the interfaces between the elongated MnS inclusions and the matrix, and strong ability of REM to adsorb hydrogen. 展开更多

Five types of KNO_3-NH_4VO_3-rare earth metal nitrate(K-V-rare earth metal) catalysts supported on a-porous alumina ceramic substrates were prepared by a coating method. All the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry. Catalytic activities were evaluated by a soot oxidation reaction using a temperature-programmed reaction system. The experimental results show that the addition of rare earth metal compound could obviously improve the catalytic activities of the K-V-based catalysts. The proper ratio of K-V-rare earth metal catalysts can not only lower the soot onset ignition temperature, but also quicken the soot oxidation rate. The processes of mixed rare earth metal (REM) conversion coatings on 2024 alloy and Al6061/SiC p metal matrix composites (MMC) were introduced. The coatings were examined to be honeycomb like feature by scanning electron microscope. X ray diffraction analysis revealed that the coatings are amorphous structure. The results of X ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the mixed REM conversion coatings consist predominantly of Ce and O, the contents of other rare earth elements (such as La, Pr) are relatively low, the coatings are about 2~4 μm thickness with excellent adhesion and wearability. The results of mass loss test showed that the mixed REM conversion coatings produce corrosion resistant surface of 2024 alloy and Al6061/SiC p. [ 展开更多

This rain water samples harvested for drinking and agriculture from Gaza collected in November 2012 were analyzed for different rare metals (Rb, Zr, Ti, Tl, Sb, Sc, Y), and rare earth metals (La, and Ce). These metals usually have no maximum acceptable limits as there is no sufficient data about their toxicity to human health. Their control should be therefore controlled in water to monitor their concentration in water (ground, harvested, etc.). This study was conducted to determine the water quality of harvested water which is used for drinking in the study area. 43 water samples were collected in November 2012 during the first rain from house wells and rain water pools. The concentrations of the metals detected in the collected harvested rainwater vary significantly between the 43 samples, and all of them were detected in all water samples analyzed in this study. The results obtained from this study suggest a possible risk to the population of the study area given the high concentration of some metals that have no maximum allowed concentration, and the fact that for many people in the study area, harvested rain water is a main source of their water supply. 展开更多

In this work,to study the phase structure effect, three groups of Cu/REO catalysts were prepared with cubic and monoclinic Gd_(2)O_(3),Eu_(2)O_(3)and Sm_(2)O_(3) supports for MSR reaction to produce H_(2).Based on CH3OH conversion and H_(2)yield,the reaction perfo rmance of the catalysts ranks as Cu/Sm_(2)O_(3)-M>Cu/Sm_(2)O_(3)-C>Cu/Gd_(2)O_(3)-M>Cu/Gd_(2)O_(3)-C>Cu/Eu_(2)O_(3)-M>Cu/Eu_(2)O_(3)-C.For the same kind of REO,Cu supported on the monoclinic support shows better performance than on the cubic one.Despite the phase structure difference,Sm_(2)O_(3) is the best support among all the three kinds of REOs.Compared with Cu/REO catalysts prepared with cubic supports, the corresponding catalysts prepared with monoclinic supports generally possess mo re surface oxygen vacancies, which can generate mo re surface active oxygen(O_(2)^(-)) and moderate basic sites. Moreover, the contents of Cu^(+) on the catalysts follow the same sequence. The reaction performance is positively related to the amount of these three types of surface sites. But metallic Cuo species is necessary to maintain the Cu^(+)■Cu^(0) redox cycle.Furthe rmore,on a catalyst with good perfo rmance, those vital surface reaction intermediates can be stabilized during the reaction.Cu/Sm_(2)O_(3)-M possesses the largest quantities of these surface sites, and has the appropriate amount of Cu^(+) and Cu^(0) after reduction, thereby displaying the optimal performance in all the catalysts. In conclusion, evident support crystal structure effect is observed for Cu/REO catalysts, and a monoclinic phase REO is a better support than the respective cubic phase one. 展开更多

Rare earth metals (REMs) are a series of 17 elements that have widespread and unique applications in high technology, power generation, communications, and defense industries. These resources are also pivotal to emergent sustainable energy and car- bon alternative technologies. Recovery of REMs is interesting due to its high market prices along with various industrial applications. Conventional technologies, viz. precipitation, filtration, liquid-liquid extraction, solid-liquid extraction, ion exchange, super critical extraction, electrowinning, electrorefining, electroslag ref'ming, etc., which have been developed for the recovery of REMs, are not economically attractive. Biosorption represents a biotechnological innovation as well as a cost effective excellent tool for the recovery of rare earth metals from aqueous solutions. A variety ofbiomaterials such as algae, fungi, bacteria, resin, activated carbon, etc., have been reported to serve as potential adsorbents for the recovery of REMs. The metal binding mechanisms, as well as the parameters in- fluencing the uptake of rare earth metals and isotherm modeling are presented here. This article provides an overview of past achievements and current scenario of the biosorption studies carried out using some promising biosorbents which could serve as an economical means for recovering REMs. The experimental findings reported by different workers will provide insights into this re- search frontier. 展开更多

Sorption characteristics of ion exchange resins 001 × 7, 005 × 8, D72 regarding rare earth metals (REM) during extraction from barren solution of uranium sorption in dynamic conditions were investigated. It was identified that D72 resin capacity on analyzed REM was 2.46 mg.cm-3 after passing 220 BV (bed volume) of initial solution with 95 % recovery of element of REM with the lowest affinity. Researches on REM desorption in dynamic conditions from investigated ion exchange resins by solution of 1.7 mol.L-1 HNO3 and 8.0 mol.L-1 NHnNO3 with 0.2 mol.L-1 HNO3 passing were carded out. It was identified that using desorption solution based on ammonium nitrate allows to achieve acceptable recovery degree of REM from the resin.
