The aim of this study was to investigate the association between personality traits and the self-perceived health status, stratified by medical conditions in a representative sample of non-institutionalized elderly people in Chile. The data used for this study come from the fourth waves (2009) of the Chilean Social Protection Survey (SPS-2009). Included were a total of 2655 subjects aged 65 and over. The results showed that higher scores of all five personality factors were associated with good health. Those with the perception of poor health were more likely to be female, with lower education level and older than those with good health. With the exception of agreeableness, strong and significant associations with self-perceived health were demonstrated for extraversion, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness, among elderly with medical conditions. Among elderly without medical problems, significant associations with self-perceived health were demonstrated only for extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability. This study has shown that there is a consistent association between personality factors and self-perceived health throughout the older population. Our results suggest that extraversion and openness traits could be acting as “protector” factors and agreeableness and conscientiousness traits as “resilient” factors, facing to the health problems among elderly people.展开更多

On the contrary, elderly people whose self-perceived age is older than their chronological age were shown to experience negative health outcomes. This study investigated whether the self-perceived age (younger or older) relative to chronological age promotes social activity. The baseline data acquired from 3094 older adults as part of the Keeping Active across Generations Uniting the Youth and the Aged study was used in the current study. The participants completed a questionnaire that solicits information pertaining to sociodemographic factors, felt age, self-rated health, physical activity, depression, disease burden, fall history, fear of falling, level of instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and social activity. The discrepancy between felt age and chronological age was defined as the self-perceived age. Self-perceived age was calculated by subtracting the participant’s chronological age from the felt age, and the score for the difference was divided by the chronological age. The Japan Science and Technology Agency Index of Competence was used to evaluate social activity. Regression analysis results revealed that a younger self-perceived age was associated with higher social activity after controlling for sociodemographic factors, self-rated health, depression, physical activity, disease burden, level of IADL, fall history and fear of falling. Fall history was significantly associated with higher social activity in young-old participants (65 - 74 years) (p = 0.014) but not in old-old participants (>75 years). This study suggests that a younger self-perceived age in older adults would lead to a high-level living function. This finding may provide useful information for interventions aimed at the promotion of health and/or the prevention of frailty.展开更多

In total, 5887 subjects(2568 males, 3319 females) over 19 years old were enrolled in this study. Interviews were performed to obtain information on demographic characteristics and medical conditions. A self-administered questionnaire and medical examination were used to assess the smoking history, alcohol use, physical activity, sleep duration, and body weight of the subjects. Chronic hepatitis B was diagnosed based on detection of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag). The subjects were categorized into HBs Ag positive and negative groups, and a complex sampling analysis was conducted to compare the health behaviors between these groups.RESULTS Among males, the current smoking rate in the HBs Ag positive group was higher than that in the negative group(45.5% vs 38.5%). In the positive group, the rates of monthly and high-risk alcohol use were 70.4% and 17.6% in males and 45.9% and 3.8% in females, respectively. The rate of alcohol use was similar between the two groups [P = 0.455(males) and P = 0.476(females)]. In the HBs Ag positive group, 32.3% and 49.9% of males and 26.5% and 49.6% of females were overweight and physically inactive, respectively. High-risk alcohol consumption and physical inactivity were significantly associated with self-perceived health status.CONCLUSION Our data demonstrate that a large proportion of Korean adults with chronic hepatitis B have poor health behaviors. Further studies are needed to confirm our results.展开更多

文摘Objectives:Chronic renal failure affects the physiological, psychological, functional ability, and independent status of the patient, which might result in a burden to the family members caring for them. The objective of the study was to identify caregivers'level of burden and establish the impact of educational intervention programs on caregiving outcomes. Methods:This was a one-group pre-test post-test study conducted between April and August 2017 on family caregivers of hemodialysis patients.A convenient sample of 169 caregivers was used.A sociodemographic questionnaire, the OBCS,and BCOS were utilized for data collection, which occurred at baseline and two weeks post-intervention.The collected data were analyzed using SPSS where t-test determined the impact of the intervention. Results:Caregivers were found to be moderately burdened(M=2.73,SD=0.23)and their lives had changed for the worst as a result of caregiving(M=3.17,SD=5.89).There were significant differences in caregiving outcome scores before and after the intervention(P<0.05).Conclusion:Caring for patients receiving hemodialysis adds extra responsibilities to the caregivers'schedule thus leaving them substantially burdened.Educating caregivers on the required care eased their burden and improved caregiving outcomes.Recommendations are made that healthcare professionals should assess caregiver burden, and address their physical and mental health needs.Caregivers should also be regularly educated on the regular caregiving tasks to ease their burden.
文摘Objective:To understand the psychological process of patients with post-herpetic neuralgia(PHN)and provide references for the psychological management of PHN.Methods:The objective sampling method was used to conduct semi-structural in-depth interviews on 10 PHN patients, and Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis method was used for data analysis. Results:According to the different pain durations of PHN patients, the patients were divided into three stages and five themes were extracted:the need for strong pain relief, the helpless tolerance of pain, the self-feeling burden, the need for health education, and the positive response to pain. Conclusions:PHN has complex psychological activities,so it is necessary to pay attention to the psychological process of patients and take effective psychological measures to intervene negative psychology so that patients can actively cope with the pain.
文摘With quantitative method, this paper attempts to figure out in L2 motivation perspective the factors that affect the classroom oral participation of the teacher-learners in their further education. The findings obtained after a correlation study of the relationship between the learners' oral participation and the factors in the levels of language, learner and learning situation indicate that self-perceived competence and desire to communicate display greater correlation with participation. This paper also puts forwards some suggestions on how to improve learners' self-perceived competence and promote their desire to communicate in class.
