Universities across the globe are recognizing the need to implement sustainable landscaping practices in order to support wildlife, improve water quality and positively impact human health and wellbeing. Georgia Institute of Technology learned that such sustainable practices, when properly aligned with overarching campus goals, can also enable continuous, collaborative decision-making and student engagement. The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) is a leading research university situated on 426 acres of land in midtown Atlanta, Georgia, with a student population of 27,000 (Fall 2017). An urban oasis in the center of town, Georgia Tech’s campus offers 312.5 landscaped acres, 3.5 naturalized acres and 110 acres of buildings. The campus is also a level II certified arboretum boasting 12,000+ trees in its urban forest. Prior to the 1990s, Georgia Tech was commonly referred to as a concrete and brick campus with very little landscape. However, in 1999 all that changed when the Georgia Tech administration decided to invest in sustainable landscaping, including the recruitment of qualified staff with specific skill sets to take on this challenge. The Institute’s initial landscape master plan objectives were to reduce impervious surfaces such as surface parking lots, increase woodland coverage and enlarge the tree canopy. A significant amount of sustainable landscape practices and collaborative methods grew from these initial objectives. Establishing a plan with clear goals, having the support of executive leadership and employing the right team members enabled the Georgia Tech campus to be transformed from a concrete jungle to a forested, urban oasis in less than 20 years. 展开更多

This study emphasizes the connection between theory and practice in research frame. It is intended by this research using content analysis of UI GreenMetric, universities' websites and sustainability annual reports observing universities' practices related to sustainability to answer the research question, which is: How are university managements embedding sustainability-oriented practices in sustainability focused European universities as far as CORE system (Curriculum, Operations, Research, and Engagement) is considered? The employed research methodology mainly relies on content analysis of the studied universities from the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University assessment and ranking index. The UI GreenMetric Sustainable University assessment and ranking index was selected since it considers the Operations, Curriculum, Research, and Engagements (CORE system) of universities with indicators such as Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education. This covers the triple bottom line of sustainability (Environment, Economy, and Society) and other indexes like GASU, AASHE, STARS and others, focused mostly on operational Eco-efficiency. UI GreenMetric index is the first and the only ranking that measures each participating university's commitment in developing an "environmentally friendly" infrastructure. The total sample of the study observed and evaluated in this study are five (5) top European Sustainable Universities according to UI GreenMetric sustainable ranking index. The result shows a significant progress in Operational practices except in the area of Campus Setting and Infrastructure. There was a less significant progress in the Curriculum, Research, and Engagement practices of the CORE system of sustainability-oriented practices which are being integrated into the studied universities. This research provides a state of the art result regarding the embeddedness of sustainable practice in European universities. It has the potential to help any university to better integrate sustainability in their management system. 展开更多

Vietnam ranks as one of the largest rice exporters in the world. Two major deltas, the Mekong River Delta and the Red River Delta, contribute around 70%of the country’s rice production and 90%of its rice exports, while people in the mountainous areas of Central Vietnam still suffer from food shortage for three to four months per year.To combat this incongruous situation, the Foundation for International Development/Relief(FIDR),a Japan-based non-governmental organization(NGO),launched a project to introduce system of rice intensification(SRI)methods and developed the community-based dissemination(CBD)model. One of the difficulties that the government and aid agencies generally face is to create an effective and sustainable dissemination model, when the newly-introduced technology is totally unfamiliar to targeted region and residents.Vietnam consists of 54 ethnic groups, and 14%of the population is comprised of 53 ethnic minorities, mainly living in mountainous areas.Almost 50%of them still live below the poverty line and are threatened by food shortage.Within their cultural context,it is hard to adapt to the new concepts of farming, and they are not used to paddy rice cultivation yet.As the result of the project, the model successfully reduced the food shortage of 1.5 months less in average with more than 4,000 households involved. The model is now turned over to the local government as a case of sustainable management practices. This paper aimed to examine what made the model effectively function. 展开更多

We have the tools and the knowledge to create much healthier, economical, and ecologically responsible buildings at little or no incremental cost over that of conventional buildings.Unfortunately, both actual and perceived financial barriers are preventing widespread adoption of sustainable design, construction, and maintenance practices.Often organizations express a commitment to sustainable design and construction, but limit the actual implementation to only low-hanging fruit and ignore any significant investment. We need to be able to explain the benefits of sustainable design, construction, and facilities management in a more compelling fashion. In addition to talking about important features of green building, such as decreased use of energy, water, and other natural resources,we need to emphasize the benefits of green building in terms that resonate with key decision makers, such as higher net profits, increased asset values, enhanced image and reduced risk. This article provides useful information that could help you address some barriers to sustainable initiatives:•Every executive that you speak to is aware that data can be manipulated and may be skeptical of studies conducted by organizations that could benefit from a particular set of results. So I’ve included information on independent third-party studies.•In challenging economic times, people are particularly concerned about short-term cash flow.So I’ve included information on programs developed by the Building Owners and Management Association(BOMA)International to maximize asset values without sacrificing shorter-term profits.•Often people are risk-averse and feel more comfortable in the middle of the pack than on the cutting edge.So I’m including information on some potential risks of not going green, including decreased asset values and increased operating costs. Many aspects of sustainable design and construction are based upon proven technology and are being increasingly incorporated into best practices for the design and construction industries, which might lead to legal problems for those who do not include the more widely accepted sustainability measures in their projects. It can be difficult to find and navigate through existing incentives for energy efficiency. So I’m including information on a tool to help you find what initiatives are available and some expert advice on how to use this type of tool.•Often an executive may be far more concerned with the next quarter’s financial results than in the long-term profitability of an organization that he or she may very well not be working for in 20 years.Currently accepted financial accounting methods encourage this short-term focus. So I’m including information on the efforts of leaders in the finance sector to change accounting principles to accommodate considerations of long-term profitability.•Normally, people tend to accept the opinions of acknowledged leaders in their own fields. So I’m including examples of how sustainable initiatives are contributing to the bottom lines of several highly respected organizations.I’m also including information about efforts to create a globally accepted framework for accounting for sustainability that brings together financial, environmental, social, and governance information in a single integrated reporting format by a coalition including the Big Four accounting firms-PricewaterhouseCoopers,Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu,Ernst&Young and KPMG. 展开更多

The goals of this study are to assess the viability of waste tire-derived char(WTDC)as a sustainable,low-cost fine aggregate surrogate material for asphalt mixtures and to develop the statistically coupled neural network(SCNN)model for predicting volumetric and Marshall properties of asphalt mixtures modified with WTDC.The study is based on experimental data acquired from laboratory volumetric and Marshall properties testing on WTDCmodified asphalt mixtures(WTDC-MAM).The input variables comprised waste tire char content and asphalt binder content. The output variables comprised mixture unit weight, total voids, voids filled with asphalt,Marshall stability, and flow.Statistical coupled neural networks were utilized to predict the volumetric and Marshall properties of asphalt mixtures. For predictive modeling, the SCNN model is employed, incorporating a three-layer neural network and preprocessing techniques to enhance accuracy and reliability. The optimal network architecture, using the collected dataset, was a 2:6:5 structure, and the neural network was trained with 60%of the data, whereas the other 20%was used for cross-validation and testing respectively. The network employed a hyperbolic tangent(tanh)activation function and a feed-forward backpropagation.According to the results, the network model could accurately predict the volumetric and Marshall properties. The predicted accuracy of SCNN was found to be as high value>98%and low prediction errors for both volumetric and Marshall properties. This study demonstrates WTDC's potential as a low-cost,sustainable aggregate replacement. The SCNN-based predictive model proves its efficiency and versatility and promotes sustainable practices. 展开更多

This study investigates the multifaceted impacts of climate change on the Midwest region of the United States, particularly the rising temperatures and precipitation brought about by hot weather activities and technological advances since the 19th century. From 1900 to 2010, temperatures in the Midwest rose by an average of 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit, which would also lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Precipitation is also expected to increase due to increased storm activity and changes in regional weather patterns. This paper explores the impact of these changes on urban and agricultural areas. In urban areas such as the city of Chicago, runoff from the increasing impervious surface areas poses challenges to the drainage system, and agriculture areas are challenged by soil erosion, nutrient loss, and fewer planting days due to excessive rainfall. Sustainable solutions such as no-till agriculture and the creation of grassland zones are discussed. Using historical data, recent climate studies and projections, the paper Outlines ways to enhance the Midwest’s ecology and resilience to climate change. 展开更多

Background:Sustainable land management is considered as one of the useful approaches to combat the threat of various forms of land degradation in Ethiopia.Despite this, there is scant information regarding households’decision towards the implementation of sustainable land management practices. This paper, therefore, looks into the determinants for the continued use and choice of the sustainable land management practices by smallholder farmers and its productivity effect in three randomly chosen districts in Tigrai region,Ethiopia. The study uses data from household survey and key informant interviews. The paper employs a binary logit to analyze the determinants for the decision of continued use of sustainable land management practices, and a multivariate probit to analyze the simultaneous adoption decision of sustainable land management practices using cross sectional data collected from 230 randomly selected households. The impact of sustainable land management practices was also evaluated using propensity score matching. Results:Farming techniques, wealth status,agro-ecological variations, and plot level characteristics were found to be associated with the implementation decision of sustainable land management practices by rural households.Besides, institutional supports and access to basic infrastructures influenced the overall continued use of sustainable land management practices and the preference of households toward these practices. The study also finds that the value of crop production of sustainable land management users was on average 77–100%higher than that of nonusers. Conclusions:The results of the current study confirm that the implementation of various sustainable land management practices are influenced by farming technologies deployed by rural households,agro-ecological variations, plot characteristics, and institutional supports. The findings also affirm that most of the sustainable land management practices are complementary to one another, and implementing two or more sustainable land management practices on a given plot is highly associated with higher value of crop production.Such complementarity highlights that the productivity effect of a given sustainable land management practice is enhanced by the use of the other ones. 展开更多

Southern Malawi is continuously affected by tropical cyclone-related floods(TCRFs),which have negative consequences on households'livelihoods, thereby displacing most households to neighbouring communities of Mozambique. The TCRFs have further threatened national, regional, community, and household food security agenda, which is already constrained by poverty, poor agricultural practices, low use of improved varieties, unaffordable inorganic fertilizers, and fragmenting landholding sizes.Accordingly, households have indigenously engineered resilience-based Sustainable Landscape Management(SLM)practices, like intercropping, agroforestry, cover cropping, and soil and water conservation practices, against the adverse effects of TCRFs on-farm productivity.Hence, this study examines the effect of TCRFs and SLM adoption on-farm productivity. While using rigorous endogenous switching regression econometric tools, the study finds TCRFs reducing farm productivity by 27 percent. After SLM adoption, the study observes farm productivity enhancement by 29-126 percent when households adopt at least one SLM practices under varying degrees of TCRFs.Despite the highlighted advantages of SLM adoption, female farmers are less likely to adopt SLM practices because they do not have access to productive resources.Hence, the study proposes the need of gender targeted extension services, accompanied by some seed capital for SLM adoption.Besides, there is need to sensitize farmers on the complementarities between inorganic fertilizer and SLM practices.Lastly, future studies should assess the effect of sustained SLM adoption or dis-adoption and input intensification on farm productivity. 展开更多
