Cocoa accounts for around a third of the country’s export earnings, but production is under threat from the swollen shoot virus, which is causing major yield reductions. The aim of the study is to establish a link between the chemical properties of the soil and the presence of the disease, in particular the levels of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and acidity (pH) in the soil. Specifically, soils from healthy plots were compared with soils from infested plots in six plantations in the Bouaflé and Kononfla sub-prefectures. The results show that soils from infested plots have lower phosphorus levels and near-neutral acidity in the 20 - 40 cm soil layer, while soils from healthy plots are slightly acidic and contain more calcium and phosphorus. These chemical differences seem to influence the prevalence of the virus. Low phosphorus levels appear to be a key factor in the vulnerability of cocoa trees to the disease. The study therefore suggests that any strategy to combat swollen shoot should include better soil management, incorporating factors such as soil depth and the availability of essential nutrients. In addition, an assessment of the micro-organisms present in the soil could provide further information on the interactions between the soil and the disease.展开更多

Serious damage occurs in the form of necrosis, putridity, cankers, swollen stems and discolored wood of trunks and branches of young and mature trees. Tests of allergic reaction, pathogenicity, culture characteristic, Gram stain and anaerobic culture revealed that the pathogen is Erwinia sp. Its occurrence depends mainly on the predisposing factors of the disease among which the susceptibility of poplars is the most important one. The disease becomes widespread in association with low-lying and high-humidity terrain, frost injury, node wounds, insect damage, and pruning and other mechanical wounds. Harmful factors promote the disease.展开更多

Conservative treatment was started with steroid infiltration. Besides his knee complaint reported a bilateral painless swollen calf muscle without traumatic cause, and also without any pain at night, fever or medical illness. On physical examination the soleus muscle had a swollen aspect in both calfs. The skin appeared normal without deformities and the arterial pulsations were intact. An X-ray did not show abnormalities in the tibia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the legs revealed bilateral multiple saccular intramuscular venous malformations involving the soleus muscle. Intramuscular venous malformations in skeletal muscles are rare, especially when the occurrence is bilateral. Bilateral venous malformations have the potential to be missed because of the intramuscular localization. Symptoms of intramuscular venous malformation can be often mild and overlap with nonexercise related compartment syndrome, claudication, lymphedema and post thrombotic syndrome or muscle strains.展开更多

He was examined at a military hospital where electromyoneurography showed the signs of distal sensory-motor polyneuropathy with axon demyelinization and weak myopathic changes, whereas histopathological examination of gastrocnemius muscle biopsy revealed some mild and nonspecific myopathy. Besides, he was found to have subcutaneous ankle tissue edemas and hypertransaminasemia. Due to these reasons, he was dismissed from the military service and examined at another hospital where bone osteodensitometry revealed low bone mineral density of the spine. However, his medical problems were not resolved and after the second discharge from hospital he was desperately seeing doctors from time to time. Finally, at our institution he was shown to have celiac disease (CD) by positive serology (antitissue transglutaminase and antiendomysial antibodies) and small bowel mucosal histopathological examination, which showed total small bowel villous atrophy. Three months after the initiation of gluten-free diet, his ankle edema disappeared, electromyoneurographic signs of polyneuropathy improved and liver aminotransferases normalized. Good knowledge of CD extraintestinal signs and serologic screening are essential for early CD recognition and therapy.展开更多

[Method] DSHSV hyperimmune sara were prepared in ducks and rabbits by inoculation with DSHSV XD strain and then purified using saturated ammonium sulfate and Sephadex G-150 column chromatography to obtain anti-DSHSV IgG. An indirect sandwich ELISA was developed using the purified duck anti-DSHSV IgG and rabbit anti-DSHSV IgG after reaction conditions were optimized. Its specificity, sensitivity and repeatability were evaluated, and its accuracy was confirmed by observation with immunoelectron microscopy. Then, distribution of DSHSV in tissues of challenged ducks was also detected. [Result] Through optimizing conditions, the ELISA was developed. Only DSHSV could be detected by the developed method, but other pathogens could not be detected. Compared with agar gel diffusion test, the developed method was more sensitive. The coefficient of variation was less than 10%, and the developed method had good repeatability. In addition, the ELISA-positive samples contained DSHSV, as confirmed by im- munoelectron microscopy. All heart, liver, lung and kidney collected from the DSHSV-challenged ducks were positive when they were detected by the developed ELISA. [ Conclusion] The developed ELISA method is rapid, simple, specific and sensitive, and it is suitable for large-scale quaran- tine of DSHS. Heart, liver, lunq and kidney should be selected preferentially as specimens for diaclnosis of DSHS.展开更多

A course of treatment included 3 times, and the efficacy was assessed after 2 courses. Results:After treatment, 30 clinical cases were cured, 4 improved, and 1 unhealed. The total effective rate was 97.1%.Conclusions:Significant therapeutic effect of the cutaneous region drainage was found in curing swollen boil.展开更多
