As we all know, William Faulkner shows really concern for the Southern people, especially the Southern women who suffer the most. In Faulkner's works women characters play an important role, which is confirmed. After the theories of feminist literary come to understand Faulkner criticism, critics to Faulkner's novels drafting an encouraging response detect the author himself either as a pro-feminist or a misogynist. On analyzing the woman characters through Addie and Lena Grove—the women images in As I Lay Dying and Light in August, we found out that Faulkner is neither simple a pro-feminist nor a misogynist in the patriarchal society. 展开更多

Barn Burning is a short story written by William Faulkner, which first appeared in 1939 and has since been widely read. The story guides readers to observe the world through a 10-year-old boy, Sarty's point of view, at the same time, the continual intervening of omniscient narrator breaks through the restrictions of Sarty's subjective point of view. Faulkner's use of multiple points of view makes the novel hard to understand. In order to better appreciate Barn Burning, analysis of the use of multiple points of view with the help of Gerard Genette's focalization theory is necessary. Moreover, the application of Wayne Booth's ideas of implied author and discussion of Sarty's narrative reliability are also presented. Hopefully, it can help readers form a good habit of narrative thinking and understand the novel in a better way. 展开更多

The accession of an African-American Obama to the U.S. Presidency in 2008 is an epoch-making event. The thesis focuses on the current situation of the blacks in U.S. to highlight the prophetic nature of Faulkner, the Nobel Prize winning American novelist's exploration of the blacks throughout his career, namely, the miserable living states of the blacks, racial segregation against the blacks in the sphere of education and religion, racial discrimination against the blacks with regard to civil rights, racial persecution against the blacks in legal cases, and the dependency upon the black leadership to salvage the multi-ethnic nation and so on. The paper comes up with the conclusion that Faulkner is accurate in his prophecy that the savior of the nation, the blacks shall suffer and lead. 展开更多
