Based on the researches of language transfer,contrastive analysis and error analysis,this paper tries to investigate the negative transfer of Chinese on Chinese students'English writings from the perspective of syntax.During one and a half months'teaching practice in Shannxi Hanzhong No.1 Middle School,the author lived through the real teaching process and found that there were lots of problems in students'English writings.The author makes a contrastive study of the different characteristics existing in Chinese and English languag es at the level of syntax,and analyses the typical syntactic errors appearing in the 60 students'English compositions collected from one or dinary class.These syntactic errors are caused by the negative transfer of Chinese.The purpose of the investigation is to study in what pat tern students have been influenced by Chinese in their English writings.Based on the findings and analysis of the mother tongue transfer on English writings,some implications are also provided in order to help minimize or eliminate the interference of negative transfer of the Chinese in students'English writings and improve the teaching and learning of English. 展开更多

These Western travelers tried to shape the image of China as a state of civilization and wisdom, a state of moral order, and a state of wealth and power. This study investigates the avoidance of relative clauses by high vocational college students and also explores the differences in the avoidance of the RCs by high-level students and low-level students in their English writings. The data used in this study have been collected from English writing tasks and analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS17.0). The major findings of this study are stated as follows: 1) There are significant differences in the production of the relative clauses in their English writings by Chinese higher vocational college students and English native speakers. Avoidance of relative clauses exists in the English writings of higher vocational college students. 2) High-level Chinese higher vocational college students display less of the avoidance phenomenon in their English writings than low-level students. 展开更多

Academic writings, whether they are BA dissertations or semester papers, are important carriers of one's ideas and findings of their own study and research spheres. In academic papers, the most important part is the choice of topics which determines the macro direction of the paper. Important as it is, it is difficult for the English majors to choose the most appropriate topics with idea-invested thesis statements instead of some factual statements. Therefore, in order to make clear of the status quo and underlying obstacles of topic choosing, this paper is to study on 98 samples from China University of Political Science and Law's junior English majors. By observing and analyzing their writings, the paper intends to fred out some possible and accessible methods to improve English majors' academic writing and offer some insights for teachers to make some adjustments in accordance with the status quo. 展开更多

The writers of this study are the Countess de Ségur,Louisa May Alcott and Maria Clarice Marinho Villac,from France,the United States and Brazil,respectively.It’s possible to identify a connection in their life trajectories―aristocratic and bourgeois families―and the ability to write their books.These publications address a specific audience,composed of children and young people,especially females.The representation of femininity in the narratives is related to the representation of family and religiosity,since it is up to the family to guide the girls in moral terms and this question is quite highlighted by religion.Analyzing the representation of femininity is due to the fact that the main books of female writers bring female protagonists,who exhibit a rebellious and mischievous behavior,which is observed and guided by adults.The representations of femininity is still valued and legitimized.For this reason,the narratives continue to be published and adapted to other languages,bringing to light these representations that remain until the 21st century in new clothing and updated vocabulary.Some adaptations for the Portuguese will also be analyzed,trying to identify longevity the works of these writers and their meaning in some epochs. 展开更多

This research investigates four categories of high-frequency grammatical errors from 45 students’academic writings via script analysis.A group of 36 students responded to a questionnaire focusing on their beliefs regarding these grammatical constructions.The participants are enrolled in an international school in Suzhou City.A total of 646 sentences were analyzed,among which295(45.7%)are inaccurate.Of the 364 errors found,most of them(64.0%)fall into the category of Subject-verb agreement,followed by subordinate clauses(28.6%);errors in English existential construction and the passive voice are a few.Also,the usage rate of subordinate clause is 42.7%,of which a large proportion was incorrect. 展开更多

This paper reports a study on a Chinese English major's argumentative English writings focusing on the development of her thinking capacities and factors that facilitate or constrain such development. The data came from three sources: her essays, reflective journals, and my semi-structured interviews with her. Major findings can be summed up as follows: 1) at the initial stage, the participant was weak in rational thinking; 2) as she had more writing practice, she made progress in ideas and organization of ideas but not in expression of ideas; and 3) factors facilitating or constraining her development primarily include language input, cultural identification, teacher feedback and motivation. 展开更多

This study explores how error feedback is practiced by Chinese tertiary EFL teachers with its focus on the extent and modes of error feedback, types of focused errors, feedback strategies, and perceptions and attitude... This study explores how error feedback is practiced by Chinese tertiary EFL teachers with its focus on the extent and modes of error feedback, types of focused errors, feedback strategies, and perceptions and attitudes of concern. Analysis of the data from questionnaires, interviews and sample writings indicates that error feedback was extensively practiced in both comprehensive and selective modes. When providing feedback, teachers tended to focus on diction problems and ill-formed sentences, and mainly used the strategies of "direct feedback" and "hinting at the location of errors". Despite their expectations on students to locate and correct errors, teachers were found more concerned with the immediate goal of helping students avoid making the same errors than helping them learn on their own. As for the students, they expected teachers to provide comprehensive error feedback and make frequent use of error codes. This paper finally points out that for more effective error feedback, various feedback strategies should be used by teachers and self-correction and peer review should be conducted by students. 展开更多
