[Objective] The aim was to research drought resistance and adaptation mechanisms of Kaclsura coccinea under different drought stresses. [Method] The seedlings of Kadsura coccinea growing one year were taken as materials in order to investigate and analyze leaf SPAD value, relative water content (RWC), malonaldehyde (MAD), cell membrane permeability (RP), proline (PRO) and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD). [Result] As drought stress improved, leaf SPAD value and RWC were both diminishing and RWC fell remarkably; MAD, Pro, RP and SOD activity were increasing; MAD and RP grew significantly. [Conclusion] Kadsura coccinea is much sensitive to drought stress and will be affected if water loss is too much high. 展开更多

Objective:To evaluate the wound healing and antimicrobial activity of root extracts of Ixora coccinea(I.coccinea).Methods:To investigate the wound healing efficacy of root extract of I.coccinea Linn, five groups of animals were divided each containing six animals. Two wound models including incision and excision wound models were used in this study. The parameters studied were tensile strength on incision wound model and in terms of wound contraction for excision wound model were compared with standard Nitrofurazone(NFZ) ointment(0.2%w/w). Six extracts(ethanol.aqueous, petroleum ether, benzene, chloroform and ethyl acetate ) of I. coccinea were screened for in vitro growth inhibiting activity against different bacterial strains riz. Staphylococcia aureus.Bacillus pumilius,Enterococcus facialis.Escherichia coli,Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungi Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger were compared with the standard drugs ciprofloxacin and chloramphenicol for antibacterial and griscofulvin for antifungal screening. The serial dilution and cup(or) well plate methods were used for the antimicrobial study and MIC was determined. Results:The ethanolic extract showed significant (P【0.001) wound healing activity when compared to standard drug NFZ with respect to normal control group.Amongst all.ethanolic extract showed highly significant antibacterial activity against all bacterial strains used in this study when compared to standard. The aqueous extract showed moderate significant inhibition against all bacterial strains when compared to standard. All the extracts were shown negligible activity against the fungal strains used in this study. Conclusions:The ethanolic root extract of I.coccinea showed pronounced wound healing and antibacterial activity. The probable reason to heal the wound was that the external application of the extract prevented the microbes to invade through the wound thus the protection of wound occurs against the infection of the various organisms. 展开更多

[Objectives] To investigate the therapeutic effect of Kadsura coccinea on adjuvant arthritis( AA) rats and its mechanism from cytokine levels. [Methods] The complete Freund's adjuvant( CFA)-induced AA model of rats was used. The therapeutic effect of K. coccinea on AA rats was evaluated by the articular swelling, arthritis score, immune organ index and hematoxylin-eosin( HE) staining. The content of inflammatory factors TNF-α,IL-6,and IL-1β in the serum of AA rats was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay( ELISA) respectively. [Results]Compared with the model group, the total extract of K. coccinea( KCTE) could significantly inhibit the primary and secondary articular swelling of AA rats, lower the arthritis score and immune organ index, and improve the pathological state of ankles of AA rats. In the groups with a high and middle dosage of KCTE( KCTE-H and KCTE-M),KCTE could significantly reduce the content of TNF-α and IL-6 in the serum of rats, exhibiting a certain dose-effect relationship. [Conclusions]KCTE had significant therapeutic effect on the AA of rats, and the mechanism might be associated with the modulation of immune function and the decrease in the secretion of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6. 展开更多

Green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles using plant extract is a promising alternative to traditional method of chemical synthesis. In this paper, we report the synthesis of nanostructured zinc oxide particles by biological method. Highly stable and spherical zinc oxide nanoparticles are produced by using zinc acetate and Ixora coccinea leaf extract. Formation of zinc oxide nanoparticles has been confirmed by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Dynamic light scattering analysis (DLS), zetapotential study and Scanning Electron Microscope with the Energy Dispersive X-ray studies (EDX). Dynamic light scattering analysis shows average particle size of 145.1 nm whereas high zeta potential value confirms the stability of formed zinc oxide nanoparticles. The Scanning Electron Microscope reveals spherical morphology of nanoparticles and Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis confirms the formation of highly pure zinc oxide nanoparticles. The zinc oxide nanoparticles from Ixora coccinea leaves are expected to have applications in biomedical, cosmetic industries, biotechnology, sensors, medical, catalysis, optical device, coatings, drug delivery and water remediation, and also may be applied for electronic and magneto-electric devices. This new eco-friendly approach of synthesis is a novel, cheap, and convenient technique suitable for large scale commercial production. 展开更多

Pain treatment is one of the most challenging situations of the modern medicine. To overcome the actual limitations, new strategies should be developed and phytotherapy represents a promising alternative. <em>Boerhavia coccinea</em> is a medicinal plant used for the treatment of pain. The present work was undertaken to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of crude aqueous extract of the leaves of <em>Boerhavia coccinea</em> (AE) on acute pain and examine its mechanism of action. The analgesic effect of AE was evaluated at doses 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg using the formalin-induced nociception in mice. The specific analgesic effect of AE was verified by testing its effect of AE on the sleep induced by diazepam. The anti-inflammatory effects of AE were also tested <em>in vivo</em> (100 and 200 mg/kg) on CFA-induced inflammation and in vitro (1 to 300 <em>μ</em>g/ml) on the production of NO by non-activated or activated (LPS, 1 <em>μ</em>g/l) macrophages. The effect of AE in non-stimulated macrophages was evaluated in absence and in presence of L-NAME (100 <em>μ</em>g/ml) or dexathetasone (30 <em>μ</em>g/ml). AE administered orally significantly (<em>p</em> < 0.001) inhibited both neurogenic and inflammatory phases of the formalin pain with a maximum inhibition percentage of 81% at the 1st phase and 90% at the 2nd phase, but did not show any anti-inflammatory effect. AE at 50 mg/kg increased the latency to sleep and reduced sleep duration. AE drastically (<em>p</em> < 0.001) increased the NO production by non-activated or activated macrophages by up to 5654%. L-NAME and dexamethasone potentiated the activation effect of AE on NO production. In conclusion, AE possess potent antinociceptive effect that is not related to any anti-inflammatory activity. Instead, this extract increases the nitric oxide production by an unknown mechanism. 展开更多

It is essential to overcome this problem by the development of new drugs. Marine organisms as corals, sponges, seaweeds, and other are an incredible source of novel pharmacologically active compounds. Herein, the antimicrobial activity (extract/fractions) of the invasive stony coralTubastraea coccinea was evaluated by the disk diffusion method against 21 microbial strains (ATCC and clinical strains). Micro broth dilution was used to determinate the MIC of the fractions that showed antimicrobial activity by the disk diffusion method. Bioautography assay was also performed. Our results showed that the n-butanol (BF) and aqueous fractions (AF) showed activity against ATCC strains Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 31.25 and 250 μg/mL),Salmonella typhimurium (MIC 125 and 500 μg/mL), Escherichia coli (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC 62.5 and 500 μg/mL), respectively. Moreover, BF fraction was also effective against the clinical strains S. aureus(MIC 62.5 μg/mL), Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase—KPC (MIC 125 μg/mL), Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus—MRSA (MIC 125 μg/mL) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis—VRE (MIC 62.5 μg/mL). The ratio MBC/MIC reinforces the bactericidal profile of BF fraction. The bioautography assay of BF fraction showed the presence of antimicrobial components at Rf0.55. 展开更多

The present study was conducted to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of methanol extract of rachis of Ormosia coccinea (Aubl.) Jacks (MEOC) using animal models of nociception and inflammation. The antinociceptive activity of the extract was assessed using acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, hot-plate, and formalin tests. Oral administration of MEOC (500 mg/kg) produced significant (t7 〈 0.05) antinociceptive effects when tested in mice using acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing test and on the inflammatory phase of the formalin test. It was also demonstrated that MEOC had no significant effect on the response latency time to the heat stimulus in the thermal model of the hot plate test. The anti-inflammatory activity of the extract was assessed using carrageenan, histamine and serotonin induced oedema in rat paw. The oral administration of MEOC showed maximum inhibition (64.29%) at 1 h on carrageenan edema, but it did not modify the edema induced by histamine and serotonin. The present results suggest that MEOC has a peripheral antinoeiceptive and anti-inflammatory action. 展开更多

With enormous amounts of food being wasted at every level of consumption, the future of food security is in jeopardy. The confusion aroused due to“best before”or“use by”can be eliminated by intelligent colorimetric indicators which communicate the quality of food.pH indicators have gained their attention because they are simple and visually informative.Using natural pigments to fabricate pH indicators can help reducing use of carcinogenic chemicals in packaging. In this work, anthocyanins extracted from a novel flower source named Ipomoea coccinea(ICE)were added to polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and guar gum(GG)matrix in varying amounts and was applied as antioxidant and intelligent pH indicator film to monitor the freshness of chicken fillets and to visually communicate the quality of chicken. The pH indicator was characterized for halochromism, antioxidant activity, thermogravimetry, water solubility, water contact angle, surface morphology, colorimetry and X-ray diffractograms. The color change of the extract was observed from orange to red to yellow.Film with highest amount of anthocyanin extract has increased thickness of 150.5±17.86a(μm),decreased water vapor transmission rate of 4.95±0.29a(mg day􀀀1 cm^(-2))and has a crystallinity of 52.35%.Anthocyanins started to degrade at 65◦C according to thermogravimetric analysis. The film with 20%ICE showed an excellent color change in pH solutions and the highest antioxidant activity of~91%.The food study results suggested that the developed film has the potential to be employed as an active and intelligent visual indicator in poultry packaging. 展开更多

The stereochemistry of two 6, 9-oxygen bridge dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans from Kadsura coccinea, are difficult to separate and very unstable. The present study was designed to develop a high-performance liquid chromatography using circular dichroism detection for the analysis of the stereochemistry. A new 6, 9-oxygen bridge dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans named Kadsulignan Q was firstly found with an S-biphenyl configuration. The other compound was identified as Kadsulignan L with an R- biphenyl configuration. In order to obtain kinetic data on their reversible interconversion, the stability was measured at different deuterated solvents such as deuterated methanol, deuterated chloroform and deuterated dimethylsulfoxide. The lignans were more unstable and converted more easily in deuterated methanol than in deuterated chloroform and deuterated dimethylsulfoxide. 展开更多
