Diagnosis of this syndrome, which can be summarized as the small intestine being surrounded by a fibrous capsule not containing the mesothelium, is difficult in the preoperative period. A 47-year-old male patient was referred to the emergency department with complaints of abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting for two days. The abdominal computed tomography examination detected dilated small intestinal loops containing air-fluid levels clustered in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen and surrounded by a thick, saclike, contrast-enhanced membrane. During exploratory surgery, a capsular structure was identified in the upper left quadrant with a regular surface that was solid-fibrous in nature. Ab-dominal cocoon syndrome is a rarely seen condition, for which the preoperative diagnosis is difficult. The combination of physical examination and radiological signs, and the knowledge of "recurrent characteristics of the complaints" that can be learned by a careful history, may be helpful in diagnosis.展开更多

Idiopathic ACS with abdominal cryptorchidism and greater omentum hypoplasia is even rarer clinically. We successfully treated a 26-year-old male case of small bowel obstruction with acute peritonitis. He was finally diagnosed with idiopathic ACS with unilateral abdominal cryptorchidism and greater omentum hypoplasia during exploratory laparotomy. The idiopathic cases of SEP, which lack any identifiable eti-ology according to clinical, radiological and histopatho-logical findings, are also reported under the designation of abdominal cocoon syndrome. The most frequent presenting symptoms of all SEP cases are nausea, vom-iting, abdominal distention and inability to defecate, all of which are associated with the underlying intestinal obstruction. In our experiments, we forced a silkworm caterpillar to spin two, three or four thin cocoons by taking it out from the cocoon being constructed. The mechanical properties of these cocoons were studied by static tensile tests and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Though external disturbances may cause the decrease in the total weight of silk spun by the silkworm, a gradual enhancement was interestingly found in the mechanical properties of these thin cocoons. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the fractured specimens of the cocoons showed that there exist several different energy dissipation mechanisms occurred simultaneously at macro-, meso-, and micro-scales, yielding a superior capacity of cocoons to adsorb the energy of possible attacks from the outside and to protect efficiently its pupa against damage. Through evolution of millions of years, therefore, the silkworm Bombyx mori seems to have gained the ability to adapt external disturbances and to redesign a new cocoon with optimized protective function when its first cocoon has been damaged for some reasons.展开更多

Standardized donmiance directions of direct effects on cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight were high positive values, but standardized domiance directieon of maternal effects on both of them were high negative values,it showed the two characters had larger heterosis in F1 generation and depressed in F2 generation.Sex-chromosome effect (Σi8=1Lii) on cocoon she11 ratio was high negative value, explaining that females usually have lower cocoon shell ratio than males.Standardized domiance directions of direct effect and maternal effect on cocoon shell ratio were not significant, predicting that the heterosis of cocoon shell ratio in F1 generation is not obvious comparing to cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight.展开更多

文摘Expression differences of flavonoid synthase I(BmFNS I)gene in the midgut, silk gland and fat body of the male and female Bombyx Mori with sex-identified fluorescent cocoon color were detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR.The result showed that the relative expression level of BmFNS I gene in midgut of Bombyx Mori was the highest, followed by that in fat body, and the expression level in silk gland was the lowest, indicating that BmFNS I gene played an important role in flavonoids anabolism in mulberry leaves, which was the food of silkworm. However, there was no significant difference in BmFNS I gene expression level between midguts of male and female Bombyx Mori species with sex-identified fluorescent cocoon color, suggesting that there was no difference in flavonoids anabolism of mulberry leaves between the male and female Bombyx Mori with sex-identified fluorescent cocoon color,at least no difference in flavonoids anabolism regulated by FSN I gene.
文摘1.Estimates of genetic variance and covariance for individual characters showed that cocoon weight was controlled by both gene direct effect and maternal effect;Cocoon shell weight was controlled by gene direct effect mainly;Cocoon shell ratio was mainly due to maternal effect and se x-linked effect.2.Estimates of genetic covariance components of each pair of ch aracters indicated that there were high significant positive relationships among most of genetic effects except maternal additive effect in cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight. There was a high positive relationship idirect effect between cocoon weight and cocoon shell ratio, but in cytop lasm effect and maternal effect were high negative relationships between them. Also there were high positive relationships in direct effect and maternal dominance between cocoon shell weight and cocoon shell ratio.3.Predictions of gene effects pointed out that sex-chromosome effects (Σi8=1Lii) on cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight both were lar ger positive values, that means cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight of females are generally higher than those of males in Silkworm. Standardized donmiance directions of direct effects on cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight were high positive values, but standardized domiance directieon of maternal effects on both of them were high negative values,it showed the two characters had larger heterosis in F1 generation and depressed in F2 generation.Sex-chromosome effect (Σi8=1Lii) on cocoon she11 ratio was high negative value, explaining that females usually have lower cocoon shell ratio than males.Standardized domiance directions of direct effect and maternal effect on cocoon shell ratio were not significant, predicting that the heterosis of cocoon shell ratio in F1 generation is not obvious comparing to cocoon weight and cocoon shell weight.
文摘BACKGROUND Abdominal cocoon or“encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis”(EPS)is an uncommon and rare cause of intestinal obstruction.Only a few cases have been reported in paediatric patients.Typically,EPS is described as the primary form in young adolescent girls from tropical and subtropical countries because of viral peritonitis due to retrograde menstruation or a history of peritoneal dialysis. Most patients are asymptomatic or present with abdominal pain, which is likely to occur secondary to subacute bowel obstruction.Findings at imaging, such as ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, are often nonspecific. When diagnosed,EPS is characterized by total or partial encasement of the bowel within a thick fibrocollagenous membrane that envelopes the small intestine in the form of a cocoon because of chronic intraabdominal fibroinflammatory processes. The membrane forms a fibrous tissue sheet that covers, fixes, and finely constricts the gut, compromising its motility.CASE SUMMARY We present a case of EPS in a 12-year-old boy 8 wk after primary surgery for resection of symptomatic jejunal angiodysplasia. There was no history of peritoneal dialysis or drug intake.CONCLUSION In this report,we sought to highlight the diagnostic, surgical, and histopathological characteristics and review the current literature on EPS in paediatric patients.
