The safety and stability of high-speed maglev trains traveling on viaducts in crosswinds critically depend on their aerodynamic characteristics. Therefore, this paper uses an improved delayed detached eddy simulation(IDDES)method to investigate the aerodynamic features of high-speed maglev trains with different marshaling lengths under crosswinds. The effects of marshaling lengths(varying from 3-car to 8-car groups)on the train’s aerodynamic performance, surface pressure, and the flow field surrounding the train were investigated using the three-dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes(N-S)equations.The results showed that the marshaling lengths had minimal influence on the aerodynamic performance of the head and middle cars.Conversely, the marshaling lengths are negatively correlated with the time-average side force coefficient(CS)and time-average lift force coefficient(Cl)of the tail car.Compared to the tail car of the 3-car groups, the CS and Cl fell by 27.77%and 18.29%,respectively,for the tail car of the 8-car groups. It is essential to pay more attention to the operational safety of the head car,as it exhibits the highest time average CS.Additionally, the mean pressure difference between the two sides of the tail car body increased with the marshaling lengths, and the side force direction on the tail car was opposite to that of the head and middle cars.Furthermore, the turbulent kinetic energy of the wake structure on the windward side quickly decreased as marshaling lengths increased. 展开更多

Serviceability and running safety of the high-speed train on/through a bridge are of major concern in China. Due to the uncertainty chain of the train dynamic analysis in crosswinds originating mainly from the aerodynamic assessment, this paper primarily reviews five meaningful progresses on the aerodynamics of the train-bridge system done by Wind Tunnel Laboratory of Central South University in the past several years. Firstly, the flow around the train and the uncertainty origin of the aerodynamic assessment are described from the fluid mechanism point of view. After a brief introduction of the current aerodynamic assessment methods with their strengths and weaknesses, a new-developed TRAIN-INFRASTRUCTURE rig with the maximum launch speed of 35 m/s is introduced. Then, several benchmark studies are presented, including the statistic results of the characterized geometry parameters of the currently utilized bridge-decks, the aerodynamics of the train, and the aerodynamics of the flat box/truss bridge-decks. Upon compared with the foregoing mentioned benchmarks, this paper highlights the aerodynamic interference of the train-bridge system associated with its physical natures. Finally, a porosity-and orientation-adjustable novel wind barrier with its effects on the aerodynamics of the train-bridge system is discussed. 展开更多

In this study, experiments were carried out to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train on viaducts in turbulent crosswinds using a 1:25 scaled sectional model wind-tunnel testing. Pressure measurements of two typical sections, one train-head section and one train-body section, at the windward and leeward tracks were conducted under the smooth and turbulence flows with wind attack angles between-6° and 6°, and the corresponding aerodynamic force coefficients were also calculated using the integral method. The experimental results indicate that the track position affects the mean aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle, especially for the train-body section. The fluctuating pressure coefficients at the leeward track are more significantly affected by the bridge interference compared to those at the windward track. The effect of turbulence on the train-head section is less than that on the train-body section. Additionally, the mean aerodynamic force coefficients are almost negatively correlated to wind attack angles, which is more prominent for vehicles at the leeward track. Moreover, the lateral force plays a critical role in determining the corresponding overturning moment, especially on the train-body section. 展开更多

Two trains passing each other is controlling factor for the wind-vehicle-bridge systems. To test the aerodynamic characteristics of moving vehicles under crosswinds when two trains are passing each other,a wind tunnel test device, which has two moving tracks, was developed. The rationality of the test result was discussed, the effects of intersection mode, yaw angle and lane spacing on the aerodynamic coefficients of the leeward train were analyzed, and the difference of aerodynamic coefficients between the head vehicle and the tail vehicle was discussed. The results show that the proposed test device has good repeatability. The intersection modes have a certain effect on the aerodynamic force of the leeward train when two trains are passing each other, and the results should be more reasonable during the two trains dynamic passing each other. With the decrease of yaw angle, the sudden change of train aerodynamic coefficients is more obvious. The decrease of lane spacing will increase the sudden change of leeward vehicles. In the process of two trains passing each other, the aerodynamic coefficients of the head vehicle and tail vehicle are significantly different,so the coupling vibration analysis of wind-vehicle-bridge system should be considered separately. 展开更多

Detached eddy simulation has been widely applied to simulate the flow around trains in recent years. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)model for delayed detached eddy simulation(DDES)is an essential user input. The effect of the RANS model for DDES on the aerodynamic characteristics of a train in crosswinds is investigated in this study.Three different DDES models are used, based on the Spalart-Allmaras model(SA),the realizable k-εmodel(RKE),and the shear stress transport k-ωmodel(SST).Results show that all DDES models can give relatively accurate predictions of pressure coefficient on almost all surfaces. There are only some specific differences in the small vortices, while similar flow patterns around trains could be predicted. The SST based DDES model(SSTDDES)gives the most accurate numerical results among the three models for the surface pressure. The variations in pressure on the leeward face play a key role in the variation of the side force. 展开更多

The irregularities on trains bodies are normally ignored or greatly simplified in studies concerned with aerodynamics. However, surface roughness is known to affect the flow characteristics in the boundary layer near the wall, hence potentially influencing the aerodynamic performance of a train. This work investigates the effects of roughness on the overall aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train subjected to crosswinds. Both experimental work and numerical work have been conducted to simulate a typical high-speed train with a 90?yaw angle, with both a smooth and rough surface.Roughness is applied to the roof of the train surface in the form of longitudinal strips. Results reveal that the addition of roughness is able to reduce the surface pressure on the roof and leeside of the train.Numerical results agree well with experimental ones and confirm that an increase in the roughness relative size can effectively restrain flow separation and reduce surface pressure. Moreover, numerical simulation results show that side force coefficient and roll moment coefficient subjected to rough model significantly decreased compared with smooth model. The conclusions drawn in this study offer the chance to derive critical reference values for the optimization of the aerodynamic characteristics of high-speed trains. 展开更多

The aerodynamic noise of high-speed trains increases significantly under crosswinds.Researches have typically focused on the characteristics of aerodynamic loads and the corresponding safety issues, with less attention to flow-induced noise characteristics. In the present paper, the near-field unsteady flow behaviour around a pantograph was analysed using a large eddy simulation. The far-field aerodynamic noise from a pantograph was predicted using the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustic analogy. The results showed that asymmetric characteristics of the flow field could be observed using the turbulent kinetic energy and the instantaneous vortexes in crosswind conditions.Vortex shedding, flow separation and recombination around the pantograph were the key factors for aerodynamic noise generation. The directivity of the noise radiation was inclined towards the leeward side of the pantograph. The aerodynamic noise propagation pattern can be considered as a typical point source on spherical waves when the transverse distance from the pantograph geometrical centre is farther than 8 m.The sound pressure level grew approximately as the 6 th power of the pantograph speed. The peak frequency exhibited a linear relationship with the crosswind velocity. The numerical simulation results and wind tunnel experiments had high consistency in the full frequency domain, namely, the peak frequency distribution range, the main frequency amplitude and the spectral distribution shape. 展开更多

This study investigates the performance of a natural draft dry cooling tower group in crosswind conditions through numerical analysis.A comprehensive three-dimensional model is developed to analyze the steady-state and dynamic behavior of the towers. The impact of wind speed and direction on heat rejection capacity and flow patterns is examined. Results indicate that crosswinds negatively affect the overall heat transfer capacity, with higher crosswind speeds leading to decreased heat transfer.Notably, wind direction plays a significant role, particularly at 0°.Moreover,tower response time increases with higher crosswind speeds due to increased turbulence and the formation of vortices. The response times are generally similar for wind directions of 45°and 90°,but differ when facing 0,where the leeward tower exhibits a shorter response time compared to the windward tower. These findings provide valuable insights into the performance of natural draft dry cooling tower groups under crosswind conditions, which can inform the design and operation of similar systems in practical applications. 展开更多

The performances of high-speed trains in the presence of coupling effects with crosswind and rain have attracted great attention in recent years. The objective of the present paper was to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train under such conditions in the framework of an Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. An aerodynamic model of a high-speed train was first set up,and the side force coefficient obtained from numerical simulation was compared with that provided by wind tunnel experiments to verify the accuracy of the approach. Then, the effects of the yaw angle, the resultant wind speed, and the rainfall rate on aerodynamic coefficients were analyzed. The results indicate that the aerodynamic coefficients grow almost linearly with the rainfall rate, and increase with a decrease in the resultant wind speed.Due to the impact of raindrops on the train surface and the airflow, the pressure coefficients of windward and leeward side of the train become larger with the increase of the rainfall rate.Raindrops can accelerate the airflow and suppress the vortices detachment. Moreover, the flow velocity in regions surrounding the train increases with an increase in the rainfall rate. 展开更多

Based on the train-track coupling dynamics and high-speed train aerodynamics, this paper deals with an improved algorithm for fluid-structure interaction of high-speed trains. In the algorithm, the data communication between fluid solver and structure solver is avoided by inserting the program of train-track coupling dynamics into fluid dynamics program, and the relaxation factor concerning the load boundary of the fluid-structure interface is introduced to improve the fluctuation and convergence of aerodynamic forces. With this method, the fluid-structure dynamics of a highspeed train are simulated under the condition that the velocity of crosswind is 13.8 m/s and the train speed is 350 km/h. When the relaxation factor equals 0.5, the fluctuation of aerodynamic forces is lower and its convergence is faster than in other cases. The side force and lateral displacement of the head train are compared between off-line simulation and co-simulation. Simulation results show that the fluid-structure interaction has a significant influence on the aerodynam- ics and attitude of the head train under crosswind conditions. In addition, the security indexes of the head train worsen after the fluid-structure interaction calculation. Therefore, the fluid-structure interaction calculation is necessary for high-speed trains. 展开更多

Different wind models are being used for the operational safety evaluation of a high-speed train exposed to crosswinds. However, the methodology for simulating natural wind is of substantial importance in the wind-train system, and different simplified forms of natural wind result in different levels of accuracy. The purpose of the research in this paper is to investigate the effects of different wind models on the operational safety evaluation of high-speed trains. First, three wind models, namely, steady wind model, gust wind model, and turbulent wind model, are constructed. Following this, the algorithms for computing the aerodynamic loads using the wind models are described. A multi-body dynamic model of a vehicle is then set up using the commercial software "Simpack" for investigating the dynamic behavior of a railway vehicle exposed to wind loads. The rollover risks corresponding to each wind model are evaluated by applying the definition of characteristic wind curves (CWC). The results indicate that the CWC computed using the gust wind model is marginally higher than that computed using the turbulent wind model;the difference is less than 1%. With regard to the steady wind model, the assurance coefficient substantially affects the final CWC. A reasonable agreement of CWC between the steady wind model and turbulent wind model can be obtained by applying an "appropriate value" of the assurance coefficient. This study included a systematic analysis of the operational safety evaluation results using different wind models;the analysis can serve as a reference basis for different engineering accuracy requirements. 展开更多

Under the influence of crosswinds, the running safety of trains will decrease sharply,so it is necessary to optimize the suspension parameters of trains. This paper studies the dynamic performance of high-speed trains under cross-wind conditions, and optimizes the running safety of train.A computational fluid dynamics simulation was used to determine the aerodynamic loads and moments experienced by a train.A series of dynamic models of a train, with different dynamic parameters were constructed, and analyzed, with safety metrics for these being determined. Finally,a surrogate model was built and an optimization algorithm was used upon this surrogate model,to find the minimum possible values for:derailment coefficient, vertical wheel-rail contact force, wheel load reduction ratio, wheel lateral force and overturning coefficient. There were 9 design variables, all associated with the dynamic parameters of the bogie. When the train was running with the speed of 350 km/h,under a crosswind speed of 15 m/s,the benchmark dynamic model performed poorly. The derailment coefficient was 1.31.The vertical wheel-rail contact force was 133.30 kN.The wheel load reduction rate was 0.643.The wheel lateral force was 85.67 kN,and the overturning coefficient was 0.425.After optimization, under the same running conditions, the metrics of the train were 0.268,100.44 kN,0.474,34.36 kN,and 0.421,respectively.This paper show that by combining train aerodynamics, vehicle system dynamics and many-objective optimization theory,a train’s stability can be more comprehensively analyzed, with more safety metrics being considered. 展开更多

The object of research of this paper is the DSA380 high-speed pantograph. The near-field unsteady flow around the pantograph was investigated using large eddy simulation(LES)while the far-field aerodynamic noise was analysed in the frame of the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings(FW-H)acoustic analogy.According to the results, the contact strip, base frame and knuckle are the main aerodynamic noise sources, with vortex shedding, flow separation and recombination around the pantograph being related key physical factors. The aerodynamic noise radiates outwards in the form of spherical waves when the distance of the noise receiving point is farther than 8 m.The sound pressure level(SPL)grows approximately as the 6th power of pantograph operating speed. The aerodynamic noise energy is mainly concentrated in the region of 400-1000 Hz,and the frequency band is wider with crosswind than without crosswind. The peak frequency displays a linear relationships with the operating speed and crosswind velocity, respectively. The aerodynamic and aeroacoustic generation from the knuckle-downstream orientation of the pantograph is superior to those of the knuckle-upstream orientation model. This finding may be used for the optimal design of future pantograph configurations in the presence of crosswind. 展开更多

Because of vehicle's external disturbances and model uncertainties, robust control algorithms have obtained popularity in vehicle stability control. The robust control usually gives up performance in order to guarantee the robustness of the control algorithm, therefore an improved robust internal model control(IMC) algorithm blending model tracking and internal model control is put forward for active steering system in order to reach high performance of yaw rate tracking with certain robustness. The proposed algorithm inherits the good model tracking ability of the IMC control and guarantees robustness to model uncertainties. In order to separate the design process of model tracking from the robustness design process, the improved 2 degree of freedom(DOF) robust internal model controller structure is given from the standard Youla parameterization.Simulations of double lane change maneuver and those of crosswind disturbances are conducted for evaluating the robust control algorithm,on the basis of a nonlinear vehicle simulation model with a magic tyre model. Results show that the established 2-DOF robust IMC method has better model tracking ability and a guaranteed level of robustness and robust performance, which can enhance the vehicle stability and handling, regardless of variations of the vehicle model parameters and the external crosswind interferences.Contradiction between performance and robustness of active steering control algorithm is solved and higher control performance with certain robustness to model uncertainties is obtained. 展开更多

The influence of ribs on the train aerodynamic performance was computed using detached eddy simulation(DES), and the transient iteration was solved by the dual-time step lower-upper symmetric Gauss-Seidel(LU-SGS) method. The results show that the ribs installed on the roof have a great effect on the train aerodynamic performance. Compared with trains without ribs, the lift force coefficient of the train with convex ribs changes from negative to positive, while the side force coefficient increases by 110%and 88%, respectively. Due to the combined effect of the lift force and side force, the overturning moment of the train with convex ribs and cutting ribs increases by 140% and 106%, respectively. There is larger negative pressure on the roof of the train without ribs than that with ribs. The ribs on the train would disturb the flow structure and contribute to the air separation, so the separation starts from the roof, while there is no air separation on the roof of the train without ribs. The ribs can also slow down the flow speed above the roof and make the air easily sucked back to the train surface. The vortices at the leeward side of the train without ribs are small and messy compared with those of the train with convex or cutting ribs. 展开更多

This article reports the findings on the adverse effect of the crosswind on the performance of natural draft cooling towers through numerical computation with the k-epsilon eddy-viscosity turbulence model. It is observed here that the cause of the adverse effect of the crosswind on the cooling towers call be attributed to the around flow effect which destroys the radial inflow into the cooling towers when the wind is absent. Hence, a significant deterioration in the heat transfer from the heat exchangers at lateral sides occurs. 展开更多
