This paper investigates the effect of drying environment, i.e. temperature and relative humidity, on the engineering properties and microscopic pore size distribution of an expansive soil. The shrinkage tests under different drying temperatures and relative humidity are carried out in a constant climate chamber. Then, the undisturbed samples, prepared in different drying environment, are used for the triaxial tests and mercury intrusion tests. It is found that the drying environment has noticeable influence on the engineering properties of expansive soils and it can be characterized by the drying rate. The linear shrinkage and strength increase with the decrease of the drying rate. The non-uniform deformation tends to happen in the high drying rate, which subsequently furthers the development of cracks. In addition, during the drying process, the variation of pores mainly focuses on the inter-aggregate pores and inter-particle pores. The lower drying rate leads to larger variation of pore size distribution. 展开更多

In this research, the use of borax sludge, which is generated in borax industry, as an additive in wall tile, was investigated. The wall tile samples were prepared by adding boron waste to the wall tile composition in the range of 2% - 10%. The effect of boron waste on the physical and mechanical properties of wall tile was determined. The results obtained were compared with the control tile and Turkish Standards (TS). The boron waste addition up to 8 wt.% was found to improve the water absorption and strength of wall tile. 展开更多

This paper describes the results of an experimental study on the undrained shear behaviour of loose sand collected from the location close to the epicenter of the recent Chlef (Algeria) Earthquake (October 10,1980).The study focuses on the effects of the mode of the soil deposition on the liquefaction resistance of the Chlef sand. For this purpose, the results of undrained monotonic triaxial compression tests performed on samples with initial density of 0.29 under initial confining pressures ranged from 50 kPa to 200 kPa are presented. The specimens were prepared by two depositional methods namely dry funnel pluviation and wet deposition. It was found that there was a marked difference in the undrained behaviour of sand in terms of maximal deviatoric stress, peak strength, residual strength and excess pore water pressure, even though the density and stress conditions were identical. The conclusion was that the soil fabric was responsible for this result. The results indicated also that at low confining pressures, the specimens reconstituted by the wet deposition method exhibited complete static liquefaction (zero effective confining pressure and zero stress difference). 展开更多
