Among them, the Tangjiashan Barrier Lake is the largest one. It faces very urgent risk of dam breaking when water level reaches the top and begins overflow in case of storm rainfalls and continually aftershocks, threatening already devastated cities and villages with about 1.5 million people downstream. The outburst of a similar barrier lake occurred in the Minjiang River in 1933, causing a catastrophic flood. Risk analysis indicates that not all barrier lakes are highly dangerous. Only those lakes with very high dams and water to be filled up in short period need to be dealt with immediately.展开更多

Characteristics of 10 barrier lakes were investigated and analyzed; procedure and methods for barrier lake treatment were brought forward. The dams of the barrier lakes can be classified as two classes: block rock in the south and loose deposit in the north. All the barrier dams were stable at the time of investigation, but water drainage channel needed to be constructed and to be protected from blockage or collapse. After the rain season of 2008, some dams needed to be consolidated, and change the barrier lakes to reservoirs.展开更多

These lakes are very rich in fresh water resource. This paper reports systematically geochemical features of some elements in water and sediment in crater and barrier lakes, and discusses the vertical changes, seasonal variation of some elemental concentrations in the lake water and the correlation and the moving coefficient of some elements in sediment. The result shows that the concentrations of Na, Rb, Cs, K, Be, W and F in the crater lake water are higher than those in the barrier lake water, the concentrations of Pb and La are higher and the concentrations of V, Co and Ba are lower in the crater lake sediment than in the barrier lake sediment. Moreover, the concentrations of elements in the lake water and sediment are effected strongly by the lithological characters of the catchment; on the other hand, the biogeochemical effect also acts as an important role.展开更多
