In this paper,I criticize Joel Feinberg's argument of soft paternalism,which stands against hard paternalism,as being untenable.As assessing one's voluntariness is very difficult and controversial,paternalisti...In this paper,I criticize Joel Feinberg's argument of soft paternalism,which stands against hard paternalism,as being untenable.As assessing one's voluntariness is very difficult and controversial,paternalistic measures would be preferable to be implemented by hard paternalism rather than soft paternalism.I then examine four usual criticisms of hard paternalism from the perspective of utilitarianism and the principle of autonomy.I argue that these criticisms are unsound and unfounded,and I defend hard paternalism from the perspective of Confucian familism.I argue that as one's life and identity are inseparable from one's family,“self-regarding”actions,traditionally understood,do not only affect the self,but also one's family members.Thus,paternalistic measures to protect individuals from self-harming are also aimed to protect their family members which are indeed compatible with Mill's harm principle.展开更多
Charles Taylor criticizes many liberal theories based on a kind of atomism that assumes the individual self-sufficiency outside the polity.This not only causes soft-relativism and political fragmentation but also unde...Charles Taylor criticizes many liberal theories based on a kind of atomism that assumes the individual self-sufficiency outside the polity.This not only causes soft-relativism and political fragmentation but also undermines the solidarity of the community,that is,the very condition of the formation of autonomous citizens.Taylor thus argues for communitarian politics which protects certain cultural common goods for sustaining the solidarity of the community.However,Brenda Lyshaug criticizes Taylor’s communitarianism as suppressing plurality and enhancing hostility among cultural groups.In the face of such controversies,I argue for modern Confucian familism which emphasizes the family as a common good that provides a safe,stable,and nurturing environment for nurturing children and cultivating civility for future generations with a sense of community and autonomy.I also defend Confucian familism from four possible criticisms:insufficiency of familism,hierarchical relationship in the family,the danger of nepotism,and challenge from postmodern families.I argue that unlike traditional Confucianism,modern moderation of the Confucian family can greatly reduce the hierarchical problem;its emphasis on the family as one of the foundations of politics can avoid the danger of being atomistic liberalism and suppressive communitarianism.展开更多
Singapore started to tackle the challenges of an aging society in the 1980s after its fertility declined to sub-replacement levels.A core component of the city-state’s aging policy is to foster intergenerational supp...Singapore started to tackle the challenges of an aging society in the 1980s after its fertility declined to sub-replacement levels.A core component of the city-state’s aging policy is to foster intergenerational support,which is based on the value of filial piety,harmonious intergenerational relations,and the elderly as a resource.This paper introduces the concept of state familism to capture Singapore’s comprehensive efforts to strengthen the role of the family in old-age support while promoting mutual assistance across generations.The relevant policies range from the Central Provident Fund,housing,taxation,to old-age support packages.These efforts distinguish Singapore from other Asian countries where the role of the family is sometimes stressed more in rhetoric than in action.State familism in Singapore has drawn criticisms as it is perceived as an attempt to reduce the government’s responsibility.In the recent decade,the Singapore state significantly increased direct financial support for the elderly while keeping the policy of fostering intergenerational support in place.The paper concludes by discussing the implications of Singapore’s state familism for China and other countries.展开更多

In this study, the computational performance of the Finite-volume Atmospheric Mod...High computational performance is extremely important for climate system models, especially in ultra-high-resolution model development. In this study, the computational performance of the Finite-volume Atmospheric Model of the IAP/LASG (FAMIL) was comprehensively evaluated on Tianhe-2, which was the world's top-ranked supercomputer from June 2013 to May 2016. The standardized Atmospheric Model Inter-comparison Project (AMIP) type of experiment was carried out that focused on the computational performance of each node as well as the simulation year per day (SYPD), the running cost speedup, and the scalability of the FAMIL. The results indicated that (1) based on five indexes (CPU usage, percentage of CPU kernel mode that occupies CPU time and of message passing waiting time (CPU SW), code vectorization (VEC), average of Gflops (Gflops_ AVE), and peak of Gflops (Gflops_PK)), FAMIL shows excellent computational performance on every Tianhe-2 computing node; (2) considering SYPD and the cost speedup of FAMIL systematically, the optimal Message Passing Interface (MPI) numbers of processors (MNPs) choice appears when FAMIL use 384 and 1536 MNPs for C96 (100 km) and C384 (25 km), respectively; and (3) FAMIL shows positive scalability with increased threads to drive the model. Considering the fast network speed and acceleration card in the MIC architecture on Tianhe-2, there is still significant room to improve the computational performance of FAMIL.展开更多
This paper describes the model speed and model In/Out (I/O) efficiency of the high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model FAMIL (Finite- volume Atmospheric Model of IAP/LASG) at the National Supercompute...This paper describes the model speed and model In/Out (I/O) efficiency of the high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model FAMIL (Finite- volume Atmospheric Model of IAP/LASG) at the National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin, China, on its Tianhe-lA supercomputer platform. A series of three- model-day simulations were carried out with standard Aqua Planet Experiment (APE) designed within FAMIL to obtain the time stamp for the calculation of model speed, simulation cost, and model 1/O efficiency. The results of the simulation demonstrate that FAMIL has remarkable scalability below 3456 and 6144 cores, and the lowest simulation costs are 1536 and 3456 cores for 12.5 km and 6.25 krn resolutions, respectively. Furthermore, FAMIL has excellent I/O scalability and an efficiency of more than 80% on 6 I/Os and more than 99% on 1536 I/Os.展开更多

In this paper, through the literature studies, sociology investigation, market research, and comparative analysis of the traditional pastel industry in Jingdezhen, the making flows of famille rose decoration and color enamel are introduced plus the author's understanding of famille rose decoration and color enamel, and also the understanding and inheritance of Jingdezhen traditional famille rose decoration and color enamel craftsmanship as "intangible cultural heritage" are discussed. Therefore, theoretical basis and practice guidance are provided for famille rose decoration and color enamel craftsmanship to develop toward the cultural industry, and also a reference in theory and practice is available for the inheritance and development of the handmade ceramic products as "intangible cultural heritage".展开更多

This article examines the intense debates over the New Criminal Code of Great Qing(Da-Qing xin xinglü)in the National Assembly(Zizheng yuan)during the Qing empire’s New Policy Reform(1901–11).The focus is on th...This article examines the intense debates over the New Criminal Code of Great Qing(Da-Qing xin xinglü)in the National Assembly(Zizheng yuan)during the Qing empire’s New Policy Reform(1901–11).The focus is on the conflict between those who drafted and supported the new code and those who expressed reservations,especially over reform of the laws on filial piety and fornication.The issue of reconfiguring the family and social order through law was closely related to the overarching agenda of twentieth century legal reform in China—making an empire that“ruled through the principle of filial piety”into a modern nation-state that had direct relationships with its citizens.More importantly,an analysis of the late Qing debate over family law enables this article to problematize such concepts as“Chinese”and“Western”during this crucial moment of China’s empire-to-nation transformation.It showcases the paradox of China’s modern-era reforms—a contradiction between imposing Western-inspired order with a largely indigenous logic and maintaining existing sociopolitical order in the name of preserving national identity.展开更多
