Introduction Advances in computer analysis of the English language have shown that lexical patterns are widespread in language use. Some researchers call them "lexical phrases" (Nattinger and DeCarrico,1992) or "lexical chunks" (Lewis, 1993); others use the term "multi-word chunks" or just "chunks"of language. Whatever the terms are, they are characteristic of language use and language acquisition and present advantages for language teaching and learning. The lexical approach to English teaching has received interest in recent years as an alternative to grammar-based approaches. Lexical chunk approach refers to using chunk theory to guide students to establish chunk awareness,and with the help of various teaching methods,to create various opportunities to help students properly use fixed or semi-fixed expressions in communication.Through empirical investigation,it is found that there are problems in College English translation teaching,such as single teaching mode,concepts to be updated,cultural differences and obstacles,etc.This paper conducts in-depth discussion of its impact on college students'ability to translate from Chinese to English.Chunk teaching is helpful in fluency,accuracy and decency of language output.Finally,the author puts forward suggestions such as enhancing the awareness of language blocks,strengthening the accumulation of language blocks,optimizing the design of language block exercises,and attaching importance to the cultivation of learning strategies,so as to effectively improve the translation level of college students. 展开更多

A Study on the Teaching of Lexical Phrases in Non-English Majors' Argumentative Writing

Compared structural approach with communicative approach, the former puts too much emphasis on linguistic knowledge and neglects the language application, while the latter lays too much emphasis on the communicative classroom activities and neglects the systematic study of linguistic knowledge. Both of them cannot meet the requirements of improving the non-English major students' argumentative writing scores. So based on the Lexical Approach theory, taking the College English Integrated Course 4 (LI, 2003) as the main teaching material and lexical phrases as teaching and learning units, this study explores the effectiveness of the Lexical Approach in improving non-English major students' argumentative writing through classroom activities of input, absorption, and output of lexical phrases. The results show that lexical phrases have more effects on students' English competence than single words. They can help to improve the argumentative writing scores and cultivate an interest in learning English independently. 展开更多
