The pyrolysis of cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, and ethylcyclohexane have been studied behind reflected shock waves at pressures of 5 and10 bar and at temperatures of 930-1550 K for 0.05%fuel diluted by Argon.A single-pulse shock tube(SPST)is used to perform the pyrolysis experiments at reaction times varying from 1.65 to 1.74 ms.Major products are obtained and quantified using gas chromatography analysis.A flame ionization detector and a thermal conductivity detector are used for species identification and quantification.Kinetic modeling has been performed using several detailed and lumped chemical kinetic mechanisms.Differences in modeling results among the kinetic models are described.Reaction path analysis and sensitivity analysis are performed to determine the important reactions controlling fuel pyrolysis and their influence on the predicted concentrations of reactant and product species profiles. The present work provides new fundamental knowledge in understating pyrolysis characteristics of cyclohexane compounds and additional data set for detailed kinetic mechanism development. 展开更多

The performance of combustion driver ignited by multi-spark plugs distributed along axial direction has been analysed and tested. An improved ignition method with three circumferential equidistributed ignitors at main diaphragm has been presented, by which the produced incident shock waves have higher repeatability, and better steadiness in the pressure, temperature and velocity fields of flow behind the incidence shock, and thus meets the requirements of aerodynamic experiment. The attachment of a damping section at the end of the driver can eliminate the high reflection pressure produced by detonation wave, and the backward detonation driver can be employed to generate high enthalpy and high density test flow. The incident shock wave produced by this method is well repeated and with weak attenuation. The reflection wave caused by the contracted section at the main diaphragm will weaken the unfavorable effect of rarefaction wave behind the detonation wave, which indicates that the forward detonation driver can be applied in the practice. For incident shock wave of identical strength, the initial pressure of the forward detonation driver is about 1 order of magnitude lower than that of backward detonation. 展开更多

An experimental study and a numerical simulation were conducted to investigate the mechanical and thermodynamic processes involved in the interaction between shock waves and low density foam. The experiment was done in a stainless shock tube (80 mm in inner diameter, 10 mm in wall thickness and 5 360 mm in length). The velocities of the incident and reflected compression waves in the foam were measured by using piezo-ceramic pressure sensors. The end-wall peak pressure behind the reflected wave in the foam was measured by using a crystal piezoelectric sensor. It is suggested that the high end-wall pressure may be caused by a rapid contact between the foam and the end-wall surface. Both open-cell and closed-cell foams with different length and density were tested. Through comparing the numerical and experimental end-wall pressure, the permeability coefficients α and β are quantitatively determined. 展开更多

This paper presents the electromagnetic wave propagation characteristics in plasma and the attenuation coefficients of the microwave in terms of the parameters n_e,v,ω,L,ω_b.The φ800 mm high temperature shock tube has been used to produce a uniform plasma. In order to get the attenuation of the electromagnetic wave through the plasma behind a shock wave, the microwave transmission has been used to measure the relative change of the wave power. The working frequency is f=(2~35)GHz(ω=2πf,wave length λ=15 cm~8 mm).The electron density in the plasma is n_e=(3×10^(10)~1×10^(14))cm^(-3).The collision frequency v=(1×10~8~6×10^(10))Hz.The thickness of the plasma layer L=(2~80)cm.The electron circular frequency ω_b=eBo/m_e,magnetic flux density B_0=(0~0.84)T.The experimental results show that when the plasma layer is thick (such as L/λ(?)10),the correlation between the attenuation coefficients of the electromagnetic waves and the parameters n_e,v,ω,L determined from the measurements are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of electromagnetic wave propagations in the uniform infinite plasma. When the plasma layer is thin(such as when both L and λ are of the same order),the theoretical results are only in a qualitative agreement with the experimental observations in the present parameter range, but the formula of the electromagnetic wave propagation theory in an uniform infinite plasma can not be used for quantitative computations of the correlation between the attenuation coefficients and the parameters n_e,v,ω,L.In fact,if ω<ω_p,v^2(?)ω~2,the power attenuations K of the electromagnetic waves obtained from the measurements in the thin-layer plasma are much smaller than those of the theoretical predictions. On the other hand,if ω>ω_p,v^2(?)ω~2(just v≈f),the measurements are much larger than the theoretical results. Also,we have measured the electromagnetic wave power attenuation value under the magnetic field and without a magnetic field. The result indicates that the value measured under the magnetic field shows a distinct improvement. 展开更多

Shock tubes are devices which are used in the investigation of high speed and high temperature flow of compressible gas. lnside a shock tube, the interaction between the reflected shock wave and boundary layer leads to a complex flow phenomenon. Initially a normal shock wave is formed in the shock tube which migrates toward the closed end of the tube and that in turn leads to the reflection of shock. Due to the boundary layer interaction with the reflected shock, the bifurcation of shock wave takes place. The bifurcated shock wave then approaches the contact surface and shock train is generated. Till date only a few studies have been conducted to investigate this shock train phenomenon inside the shock tube. For the present study a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis has been performed on a two dimensional axi-symmetric model of a shock tube using unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. In order to investigate the detailed characteristics of shock train, parametric studies have been performed by varying different parameters such as the shock tube length, diameter, pressure ratio used inside the shock tube. 展开更多

The shock tubes with area change are used in the free piston shock tunnels, owing to its higher driver effect. For optimized operation of this kind of shock tube,a computer program for fast simulation of transient hypersonic flow is presented. The numerical modeling embodied within this code is based on a quasi-one-dimensional Lagrangian description of the gas dynamics. In this code,a mass-loss model is also applied by using Mirels′theory of shock attenuation. The simulation of particular condition for T4 free piston shock tunnel is conducted and compared with experimental measurements and numerical simulation. The results provide good estimate for shock speed and pressure obtained after shock reflection. 展开更多

Ignition delay times for n-decane/O2/Ar mixtures were measured behind reflected shock waves using endwall pressure and CH* emission measurements in a heated shock tube. The initial postshock conditions cover pressures of 0.09-0.26 MPa, temperatures of 1 227-1 536 K, and oxygen mole fractions of 3.9%-20.7% with an equivalence ratio of 1.0. The correlation formula of ignition delay dependence on pressure, temperature, and oxygen mole fraction was obtained. The current data are in good agreement with available low-pressure experimental data, and they are then compared with the prediction of a kinetic mechanism. The current measurements extend the kinetic modeling targets for the n-decane combustion at low pressures. 展开更多

In this study, 75% and 96% argon diluent conditions were selected to determine the ig- nition delay time of stoichiometric mixture of C2Ha/O2/Ar within a range of pressures (1.3-:3.0 arm) and temperatures (1092-1743 K). Results showed a logarithmic linear rela- tionship of the ignition delay time with the reciprocal of temperatures. Under both two diluent conditions, ignition delay time decreased with increased temperature. By multiple linear regression analysis, the ignition delay correlation was deduced. According to this correlation, the calculated ignition delay time in 96% diluent was found to be nearly five times that in 75% diluent. To explain this discrepancy, the hard-sphere collision theory was adopted, and the collision numbers of ethylene to oxygen were calculated. The total collision numbers of ethylene to oxygen were 5.99×10^30 s^-1cm^-3 in 75% diluent and 1.53×10^29 s^-1cm^-3 in 96% diluent (about 40 times that in 75% diluent). According to the discrepancy between ignition delay time and collision numbers, viz. 5 times corresponds to 40 times, the steric factor can 展开更多

The localized differential quadrature (LDQ) method is a numerical technique with high accuracy for solving most kinds of nonlinear problems in engineering and can overcome the difficulties of other methods (such as difference method) to numerically evaluate the derivatives of the functions. Its high efficiency and accuracy attract many engineers to apply the method to solve most of the numerical problems in engineering. However, difficulties can still be found in some particular problems. In the following study, the LDQ was applied to solve the Sod shock tube problem. This problem is a very particular kind of problem, which challenges many common numerical methods.Three different examples were given for testing the robustness and accuracy of the LDQ.In the first example,in which common initial conditions and solving methods were given, the numerical oscillations could be found dramatically;in the second example, the initial conditions were adjusted appropriately and the numerical oscillations were less dramatic than that in the first example;in the third example, the momentum equation of the Sod shock tube problem was corrected by adding artificial viscosity, causing the numerical oscillations to nearly disappear in the process of calculation. The numerical results presented demonstrate the detailed difficulties encountered in the calculations, which need to be improved in future work. However,in summary, the localized differential quadrature is shown to be a trustworthy method for solving most of the nonlinear problems in engineering. 展开更多

In this work, the theoretical analysis and experiment results investigating the influence of plasma-induced reflected wave variations on microwave transmission characterization are presented.Firstly,an analytical transmission line model for transmission characterization of plasma in shock tube is derived and validated against full-wave simulation. Then, the theoretical analysis of transmission characterization based on a time-dependent reconstruction algorithm that takes into account the variations of reflected wave is presented and the influence of reflection variations under various states of plasma is also investigated. The unusual increase in the amplitude of transmitted wave is theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated as well. Finally, the experiment results are also presented to illustrate the effects of reflected wave variations in practical microwave transmission characterization of supersonic plasma excited in shock tube. 展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to consider 1D Riemann shock tube to investigate the formation and propagation of compression waves leading to formation, propagation and reflection of 1D normal shocks using simplified mathematical models commonly used in the published work as well as using complete mathematical models based on Conservation and Balance Laws (CBL) of classical continuum mechanics and constitutive theories for compressible viscous medium derived using entropy inequality and representation theorem. This work is aimed at resolving compression waves, the shock structure, shock formation, propagation and reflection of fully formed shocks. Evolutions obtained from the mathematical models always satisfy differentiability requirements in space and time dictated by the highest order of the derivatives of the dependent variables in the mathematical models investigated. All solutions reported in this paper including boundary conditions and initial conditions are always analytic. Solutions of the mathematical models are obtained using the space-time finite element method in which the space-time integral forms are space-time variationally consistent ensuring unconditionally stable computations during the entire evolution. Solution for a space-time strip or slab is calculated and is time marched upon convergence to obtain complete evolution for the desired space-time domain, thus ensuring time accurate evolutions. The space-time local approximation over a space-time element of a space-time strip or slab is p-version hierarchical with higher-order global differentiability in space and time, i.e., we consider scalar product approximation spaces in which k = (k1, k2) are the order of the space in space and time and p = (p1, p2) are p-levels of the approximations in space and time. Model problem studies are presented for different mathematical models and are compared with solutions obtained from the complete mathematical model based on CBL and constitutive theories for viscous compressible medium to illustrate the deficiencies and shortcomings of the simplified and approximate models in simulating correct physics of normal shocks. 展开更多

Shock tubes create simulated blast waves which can be directed and measured lo study blast wave effects under laboratory conditions. It is desirable to increase available peak pressure from ~1 MPa to ~5 MPa to simulate closer blast sources and facilitate development and testing of personal and vehicle armors.Three methods are experimentally investigated to increase peak simulated blast pressure produced by an oxyacetylene driven shock tube while maintaining suitability for laboratory studies. The first method is the addition of a Shchelkin spiral priming section which supports a deflagration to detonation transition. This approach increases the average peak pressure from 1.17 MPa to 5.33 MPa while maintaining a relevant pressure-time curve(near Friedlander waveform). The second method is a bottleneck between the driving and driven sections.Coupling a 79 mm diameter driving section to a 53 mm driven section increases the peak pressure from 1.17 MPa to 2.25 MPa.A 103 mm driving section is used to increase peak pressure to 2.64 MPa.The third method, adding solid fuel to the driving section with the oxyacetylene, results in a peak pressure increasing to 1.70 MPa. 展开更多

Gas flows through micro shock tubes are widely used in many engineering applications such as micro engines, particle delivery devices etc. Recently, few studies have been carried out to explore the shock wave excursions through micro shock tubes at very low Reynolds number and at rarefied gas condition. But these studies assumed centered shock and expansion waves, which are generally produced by instantaneous diaphragm rupture process. But in real scenario, the diaphragm ruptures with a finite rupture time and this phenomenon will significantly alter the shock wave propagation characteristics. In the present research, numerical simulations have been carried out on a two dimensional micro shock tube model to simulate the effect of finite diaphragm rupture process on the wave characteristics. The rarefaction effect was simulated using Maxwell’s slip wall equations. The results show that shock wave attenuates rapidly in micro shock tubes compared to conventional macro shock tubes. Finite diaphragm rupture causes the formation of non-centered shock wave at some distance ahead of the diaphragm. The shock propagation distance is also drastically reduced by the rupture effects. 展开更多

Ignition delay times of multi-component biomass synthesis gas (bio-syngas) diluted in argon were measured in a shock tube at elevated pressure (5, 10and 15 bar, 1 bar = 105 Pa), wide temperature ranges (1,100-1,700 K) and various equivalence ratios (0.5, 1.0, 2.0). Additionally, the effects of the variations of main constituents (H2:CO = 0.125-8) on ignition delays were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the ignition delay decreases as the pressure increases above certain temperature (around 1,200 K) and vice versa. The ignition delays were also found to rise as CO concentration increases, which is in good agreement with the literature. In addition, the ignition delays of bio-syngas were found increasing as the equivalence ratio rises. This behavior was primarily discussed in present work. Experimental results were also compared with numerical predictions of multiple chemical kinetic mechanisms and Li's mechanism was found having the best accuracy. The logarithmic ignition delays were found nonlinearly decrease with the H2 concentration under various conditions, and the effects of temperature, equivalence ratio and H2 concentration on the ignition delays are all remarkable. However, the effect of pressure is rela- tively smaller under current conditions. Sensitivity analysis and reaction pathway analysis of methane showed that R1 (H +O2= O -9 OH) is the most sensitive reaction promot- ing ignition and R13 (H +O2 (+M) = HO2 (+M)), R53(CH3+H (+M)= CH4 (+M)), R54 (CH4+H= CH3 + H2) as well as R56 (CH4 + OH = CH3 + H2O) are key reactions prohibiting ignition under current experimental conditions. Among them, R53 (CH3 + H (+M) = CH4 (+M)), R54 (CH4 + H = CH3 + H2) have the largest posi- tive sensitivities and the high contribution rate in rich mixture. The rate of production (ROP) of OH of R1 showed that OH ROP of R1 decreases sharply as the mixture turns rich. Therefore, the ignition delays become longer as the equiva- lence ratio increases. 展开更多

Recently micro shock tubes have been widely used in many engineering and industrial fields, but the characteristics of unsteady flow are not well known to date in micro shock tubes. Compared to conventional shock tubes with macro scales, flows related to shock waves in micro shock tubes are highly complicated. Stronger viscous and dissipative interactions make shock wave dynamic behaviors significantly different from theoretical predictions. In the present study, a CFD work was applied to the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations which were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The diaphragm pressure ratio and shock tube diameter were varied to investigate their effects on micro shock tube flows. Different wall boundary conditions were also performed to observe shock wave and contact surface propagation with no slip and slip walls. Detailed flow characteristics at the foot of shock wave and contact surface propagation were known from the present numerical simulations. 展开更多

We discussed the effects of the aspect ratio in the test models. Additionally the unsteady, two-dimensional, compressible Euler equations were solved for the NACA 0012 airfoil. Experiments were performed utilizing the conventional gas driven shock tube as the intermittent transonic wind tunnel. The aspect ratios of the models are about 0.86 and 1.5, respectively. The Mach numbers M 2 are about 0.84. The Reynolds numbers of the present experimental conditions were constant that Re based on chord length is about 4.0×10 5 . The results are as follows: in different aspect ratios, the difference of the shock wave location is confirmed though the Mach number and Reynolds number are same. It indicates the different correction Mach number by the effects of the side wall boundary layer though the nominal Mach number measured the same value. Also, on the difference of shock wave location for the effects of the aspect ratio, the tend of CFD shows the qualitative agreement with the result of an experiment. 展开更多
