Transplantation of the left lateral section(LLS)of the liver is now an established practice for treating advanced diffuse and unresectable focal liver diseases in children, with variants of the LLS primarily used in infants. However, the surgical challenge of matching the size of an adult donor's graft to the volume of a child's abdomen remains significant. This review explores historical developments, various approaches to measuring the required functional liver mass, and techniques to prevent complications associated with large-for-size grafts in infants. 展开更多

This article refers to the “Mathematics of Harmony” by Alexey Stakhov in 2009, a new interdisciplinary direction of modern science. The main goal of the article is to describe two modern scientific discoveries–New Geometric Theory of Phyllotaxis (Bodnar’s Geometry) and Hilbert’s Fourth Problem based on the Hyperbolic Fibonacci and Lucas Functions and “Golden” Fibonacci λ-Goniometry (λ > 0 is a given positive real number). Although these discoveries refer to different areas of science (mathematics and theoretical botany), however they are based on one and the same scientific ideas-the “golden mean,” which had been introduced by Euclid in his Elements, and its generalization—the “metallic means,” which have been studied recently by Argentinian mathematician Vera Spinadel. The article is a confirmation of interdisciplinary character of the “Mathematics of Harmony”, which originates from Euclid’s Elements. 展开更多

The study or pore characteristics is or great importance in reservoir evaluation, especially in deeply buried s andstone. It controls the storage mechanism and reservoir fluid properties of the permeable horizons. The first member of Eocene Shahejie Formation(Esl)sandstone is classified as feldspathic litharenite and lithic arkose. The present research investigates the pore characteristics and reservoir features of the deeply buried sandstone reservoir of Esl member of Shahejie Formation. The techniques including thin-section petrography, mercury injection capillary pressure(MICP),scanning electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscope images were used to demarcate the pores including primary intergranular pores and secondary intergranular, intragranular, dissolution and fracture pores.Mercury injection test and routine core analysis were led to demarcate the pore network characteristics of the studied reservoir.Pore size and pore throat size distribution are acquired from mercury injection test.Porosity values range from 0.5%to 30%,and permeability ranges 0.006-7000 mD.Pore radii of coarse-grained sandstone and fine-grained sandstone range from 0.2 to>4μm and 1 nm to 1.60μm,respectively,by MICP analysis. The mineral composition also plays an important role in protecting the pores with pressure from failure.Fractured sandstone and coarse-grained sandstone consist of large and interconnected pores that enhance the reservoir porosity and permeability, whereas fine-grained sandstone and siltstone consist of numerous pores but not well interconnected, and so they consist of high porosity with low permeability. 展开更多

To seek and describe the influence of bubble size on geometric and motion characteristics of the bubble, six nozzles with different outlet diameters were selected to inject air into water and to produce different bubble sizes.High-speed photography in conjunction with an in-house bubble image processing code was used.During the evolution of the bubble, bubble shape, traveling trajectory and the variation of bubble velocity were obtained.Bubble sizes acquired varied from0.25to8.69mm.The results show that after the bubble is separated from the nozzle, bubble shape sequentially experiences ellipsoidal shape, hat shape, mushroom shape and eventually the stable ellipsoidal shape. As the bubble size increases, the oscillation of the bubble surface is intensified. At the stabilization stage of bubble motion, bubble trajectories conform approximately to the sinusoidal function.Meanwhile, with the increase in bubble size, the bubble trajectory tends to be straightened and the influence of the horizontal bubble velocity component on the bubble trajectory attenuates. The present results explain the phenomena related to relatively large bubble size, which extends the existing relationship between the bubble terminal velocity and the equivalent bubble diameter. 展开更多

The use of coral aggregate concrete(CAC)as a novel construction material has attracted significant attention for the construction of reef engineering structures. To investigate the static splitting-tensile behaviors of CAC under the influence of two factors, namely specimen geometry and bearing strip size,a three-dimensional(3D)mesoscale modeling approach with consideration for aggregate randomness in shape and distribution was adopted in this study. We established 12 different specimen models with two specimen shapes(i.e.,a cube with an edge length of 150 mm and a cylinder with dimensions ofφ150 mm×300 mm)and six strip widths(i.e.,6,9,12,15,18,and 20 mm)for calculation. The effects of specimen geometry and strip width on the splitting-tensile properties of CAC,such as failure processes, final failure patterns, and splitting-tensile strength(fst),are analyzed and discussed systematically. The results indicate the high reliability of the developed mesoscale modeling approach and reveal the optimal computational parameters for simulating and predicting the splitting-tensile properties of CAC.The fstvalues of CAC are associated with both the specimen geometry and width of the bearing strip. The fstvalues of the cube model are slightly higher than those of the cylinder model for the same bearing strip size, representing geometry effects that can be explained by differences in fracture area.Additionally, the fstvalue of CAC gradually increases with the relative width of the bearing strip ranging from 0.04 to 0.13.Based on the elastic solution theory, the variation area of CAC fstvalues with the relative width of the bearing strip was determined preliminarily, which has great significance for studying the tensile performance of CAC. 展开更多

The Bauschinger and size effects in the thinfilm plasticity theory arising from the defect-energy of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) are analytically investigated in this paper. Firstly, this defect-energy is deduced based on the elastic interactions of coupling dislocations (or pile-ups) moving on the closed neighboring slip plane. This energy is a quadratic function of the GNDs density, and includes an elastic interaction coefficient and an energetic length scale L. By incorporating it into the work- conjugate strain gradient plasticity theory of Gurtin, an energetic stress associated with this defect energy is obtained, which just plays the role of back stress in the kinematic hardening model. Then this back-stress hardening model is used to investigate the Bauschinger and size effects in the tension problem of single crystal Al films with passivation layers. The tension stress in the film shows a reverse dependence on the film thickness h. By comparing it with discrete-dislocation simulation results, the length scale L is determined, which is just several slip plane spacing, and accords well with our physical interpretation for the defect- energy. The Bauschinger effect after unloading is analyzed by combining this back-stress hardening model with a friction model. The effects of film thickness and pre-strain on the reversed plastic strain after unloading are quantified and qualitatively compared with experiment results. 展开更多

Most of the available methods for the calculation of the three dimensional(3D)grain size dis- tribution functions(SDF)are based on the S model and lead a grave systematical error. The origin is the basic supposition of spherical grains in the S model, which does not correspond with the feature of real grains.A new model called A model is developed based on the hypothe- sis of polvhedral grains. The probability functions of the A model and the method to calculate the 3D SDFs using the A model are given in the present paper. The theoretical analyses and experimental tests have demonstrated that the A model reduces the systematical error radical- ly.It is nearly as simple as the so far used S model, but gives much better results in repro- ducing of 3D SDFs from the measured ID or 2D SDFs. 展开更多

Brazilian pre-salt reservoirs are renowned for their intricate pore networks and vuggy nature, posing significant challenges in modeling and simulating fluid flow within these carbonate reservoirs.Despite possessing excellent petrophysical properties, such as high porosity and permeability, these reservoirs typically exhibit a notably low recovery factor, sometimes falling below 10%.Previous research has indicated that various enhanced oil recovery(EOR)methods, such as water alternating gas(WAG),can substantially augment the recovery factor in pre-salt reservoirs, resulting in improvements of up to 20%.Nevertheless,the fluid flow mechanism within Brazilian carbonate reservoirs, characterized by complex pore geometry, remains unclear. Our study examines the behavior of fluid flow in a similar heterogeneous porous material, utilizing a plug sample obtained from a vugular segment of a Brazilian stromatolite outcrop, known to share analogies with certain pre-salt reservoirs. We conducted single-phase and multi-phase core flooding experiments, complemented by medical-CT scanning,to generate flow streamlines and evaluate the efficiency of water flooding.Subsequently,micro-CT scanning of the core sample was performed, and two cross-sections from horizontal and vertical plates were constructed. These cross-sections were then employed as geometries in a numerical simulator, enabling us to investigate the impact of pore geometry on fluid flow.Analysis of the pore-scale modeling and experimental data unveiled that the presence of dead-end pores and vugs results in a significant portion of the fluid remaining stagnant within these regions.Consequently, the injected fluid exhibits channeling-like behavior, leading to rapid breakthrough and low areal swept efficiency.Additionally, the numerical simulation results demonstrated that, irrespective of the size of the dead-end regions, the pressure variation within the dead-end vugs and pores is negligible.Despite the stromatolite's favorable petrophysical properties, including relatively high porosity and permeability,as well as the presence of interconnected large vugs, the recovery factor during water flooding remained low due to early breakthrough. These findings align with field data obtained from pre-salt reservoirs, providing an explanation for the observed low recovery factor during water flooding in such reservoirs. 展开更多

The space of internal geometry of a model of a real crystal is supposed to be finite, closed, and with a constant Gaussian curvature equal to unity, permitting the realization of lattice systems in accordance with Fedorov groups of transformations. For visualizing computations, the interpretation of geometrical objects on a Clifford surface (SK) in Riemannian geometry with the help of a 2D torus in a Euclidean space is used. The F-algorithm ensures a computation of 2D sections of models of point systems arranged perpendicularly to the symmetry axes l3, l4, and l6. The results of modeling can be used for calculations of geometrical sizes of crystal structures, nanostructures, parameters of the cluster organization of oxides, as well as for the development of practical applications connected with improving the structural characteristics of crystalline materials. 展开更多

Pre-polymerized vinyl trimethoxy silane(PVTMS)@MWCNT nano-aerogel system was constructed via radical polymerization,sol-gel transition and supercritical CO_(2)drying.The fabricated organic-inorganic hybrid PVTMS@MWCNT aerogel structure shows nano-pore size(30-40 nm),high specific surface area(559 m^(2)g^(−1)),high void fraction(91.7%)and enhanced mechanical property:(1)the nano-pore size is beneficial for efficiently blocking thermal conduction and thermal convection via Knudsen effect(beneficial for infrared(IR)stealth);(2)the heterogeneous interface was beneficial for IR reflection(beneficial for IR stealth)and MWCNT polarization loss(beneficial for electromagnetic wave(EMW)attenuation);(3)the high void fraction was beneficial for enhancing thermal insulation(beneficial for IR stealth)and EMW impedance match(beneficial for EMW attenuation).Guided by the above theoretical design strategy,PVTMS@MWCNT nano-aerogel shows superior EMW absorption property(cover all Ku-band)and thermal IR stealth property(ΔT reached 60.7℃).Followed by a facial combination of the above nano-aerogel with graphene film of high electrical conductivity,an extremely high electromagnetic interference shielding material(66.5 dB,2.06 mm thickness)with superior absorption performance of an average absorption-to-reflection(A/R)coefficient ratio of 25.4 and a low reflection bandwidth of 4.1 GHz(A/R ratio more than 10)was experimentally obtained in this work. 展开更多

An artificial neural network(ANN)method is introduced to predict drop size in two kinds of pulsed columns with small-scale data sets. After training, the deviation between calculate and experimental results are 3.8%and 9.3%,respectively.Through ANN model, the influence of interfacial tension and pulsation intensity on the droplet diameter has been developed.Droplet size gradually increases with the increase of interfacial tension, and decreases with the increase of pulse intensity. It can be seen that the accuracy of ANN model in predicting droplet size outside the training set range is reach the same level as the accuracy of correlation obtained based on experiments within this range. For two kinds of columns, the drop size prediction deviations of ANN model are 9.6%and 18.5%and the deviations in correlations are 11%and 15%. 展开更多

To guide the illuminating design to improve the on-state performances of gallium arsenide(GaAs)photoconductive semiconductor switch(PCSS),the effect of spot size on the operation mode of GaAsPCSS based on a semi-insulating wafer with a thickness of 1 mm,triggered by a 1064-nm extrinsic laser beam with the rectangular spot, has been investigated experimentally. It is found that the variation of the spot size in length and width can act on the different parts of the output waveform integrating the characteristics of the linear and nonlinear modes, and then significantly boosts the PCSS toward different operation modes. On this basis,a two-channel model containing the active and passive parts is introduced to interpret the relevant influencing mechanisms. Results indicate that the increased spot length can peak the amplitude of static domains in the active part to enhance the development of the nonlinear switching, while the extended spot width can change the distribution of photogenerated carriers on both parts to facilitate the linear switching and weaken the nonlinear switching, which have been proved by comparing the domain evolutions under different spot sizes. 展开更多

The traditional standard wet sieving method uses steel sieves with aperture?0.063 mm and can only determine the particle size distribution(PSD)of gravel and sand in general soil. This paper extends the traditional method and presents an extended wet sieving method. The extended method uses both the steel sieves and the nylon filter cloth sieves. The apertures of the cloth sieves are smaller than 0.063 mm and equal 0.048 mm,0.038 mm,0.014 mm,0.012 mm,0.0063 mm,0.004 mm,0.003 mm,0.002 mm,and 0.001 mm,respectively. The extended method uses five steps to separate the general soil into many material sub-groups of gravel, sand, silt and clay with known particle size ranges. The complete PSD of the general soil is then calculated from the dry masses of the individual material sub-groups.The extended method is demonstrated with a general soil of completely decomposed granite(CDG)in Hong Kong,China. The silt and clay materials with different particle size ranges are further examined, checked and verified using stereomicroscopic observation, physical and chemical property tests. The results further confirm the correctness of the extended wet sieving method. 展开更多

This study takes a fractured rock mass in the Datengxia Hydropower Station,China as an example to analyze the size effects and determine the representative elementary sizes.A novel method considering geometric parameter distributions is proposed in this work. The proposed method can quickly and simply determine the size effects and representative elementary sizes.Specifically, geometric parameter distributions, including fracture frequency, size and orientation, are generated on the basis of the Bernoulli trial and Monte Carlo simulation. The distributions are assessed using the coefficient of variation(CV),and the acceptable variations for CV(5%,10%and 20%)are used to determine representative elementary sizes.Generally, the representative element of rock masses is the representative elementary volume(REV).The present study extends the representative element to other dimensions,i.e.representative elementary length(REL)and representative elementary area(REA)for one and two dimensions, respectively.REL and REA are useful in studying the size effects of one-(1D)and twodimensional(2D)characteristics of rock masses. The relationships among multi-dimensional representative elementary sizes are established. The representative elementary sizes reduce with the increase in the dimensions, and REA and REV can be deduced by REL.Therefore, the proposed method can quickly and simply determine REL and further estimate REA and REV,which considerably improves the efficiency of rock mass analysis. 展开更多

In order to improve the overall resilience of the urban infrastructures, it is required to conduct blast resistant design for important building structures in the city. For complex terrain in the city, it is recommended to determine the blast load on the structures via numerical simulation. Since the mesh size of the numerical model highly depends on the explosion scenario, there is no generally applicable approach for the mesh size selection. An efficient method to determine the mesh size of the numerical model of near-ground detonation based on explosion scenarios is proposed in this study. The effect of mesh size on the propagation of blast wave under different explosive weights was studied, and the correlations between the mesh size effect and the charge weight or the scaled distance was described. Based on the principle of the finite element method and Hopkinson-Cranz scaling law, a mesh size measurement unit related to the explosive weight was proposed as the criterion for determining the mesh size in the numerical simulation. Finally, the applicability of the method proposed in this paper was verified by comparing the results from numerical simulation and the explosion tests and was verified in AUTODYN. 展开更多
