The pattern for utilization of rural space is closely related to rural transformationdevelopment (RTD). The problem of rural space utilization is an important manifestation of theuncoordinated relationship between land use patterns and rural development status during atransformation period. Considering the rural space utilization issue, this article seeks to analyzethe interaction mechanisms between land use transition (LUT) and rural spatial governanceand then build a rural spatial governance analysis framework based on LUT. Also, thepaper explores the internal relationship between rural spatial governance and rural vitalizationand discusses the research prospective of the interaction. The study found that: (1) Ruralspace utilization has systemic problems such as limited development space, ill-defined ownershipand poor organization, which have become important obstacles for rural development.(2) The uncoordinated relationship between LUT and RTD is an important reason for the dilemmasurrounding rural space utilization. (3) The LUT provides a basis for determining thetiming of rural spatial governance, specifying spatial governance objectives, and clarifyingrural spatial governance methods. (4) The construction of a comprehensive analysis frameworkof “matter-ownership-organization” of rural space based on the LUT has created conditionsfor the orderly promotion of rural spatial governance. (5) Rural spatial governance whichfacilitates the integration of urban-rural development is an important foundation for rural vitalization.(6) Interaction analysis of LUT, RTD and rural spatial governance is conducive tofacilitating research on the operational mechanism of rural regional systems and to expandingthe research field of rural geography. 展开更多

The recent prevalence of property-led urban renewal in Chinese cities has generated problems such as"nail households"1 and the loss of public welfare. This paper begins with the theoretical framework of spatial governance in urban renewal and then discusses the problems of property-led urban renewal. From a perspective of spatial governance,it proposes the framework, process, and policy design for the transition of the urban renewal model characterized by"government leadership and self-renewal of village collectives."By taking an urban village within a large city in south China as a case study, this paper compares the profit distribution among each party between the property-led urban renewal model and the village collectives’self-renewal.It concludes with the significance of this new model for the establishment of a spatial governance system and highquality urban and rural development in China. 展开更多

Taking Beijing’s Songzhuang Art District as an example, this paper conducts an integrated evolutionary and multi-scalar governance analytical framework through participant’s observations, in-depth qualitative interviews, and extensive evaluations of policy documents. It aims to explore the transformation modes of art districts under the intervention of multi-scalar spatial governance and the roles of local governments in the course of development. The research places the spatial development into a wider theoretical context of local developmental state, local state corporatism, and entrepreneurial state, as well as to combine the socio-political objectives together with economic goals of the local government. The study argues that Songzhuang has witnessed a unique form of artistic urbanism, a process of rapid urbanization of villages in the art-led development. Local governments have competed for taking control of spatial governance through actions characterized by decentralization, alliance, and entrepreneurship, following the logic of performing an overall control over the socio-political, economic, and cultural aspects of art districts, and profiting from land market. 展开更多

The most crucial notion in built environment studies, space,is forced to undergo a reinterpretation due to the influence of numerous social phenomena and cultural movements, such as postmodernism, the information age,and globalization. The traditional concept of time subverts time division and space restriction, along with the changes brought on by contemporary urbanization and postmodernist cultural norms. As a result, the urban plaza area, which is a unique cultural space, begins to take shape. It brings together previously different places, such as“public and private,”“political and daily,”“working and leisure,”as well as“physical and virtual.”The urban plaza is a useful research subject since it is a public area where the majority of cultural traits associated with urbanization are found. The spatial politics of the urban plaza experience a historic shift from macro politics to micro politics under the influence of postmodernism.Premised on this notion, the purpose of this study is to investigate the specific space of today’s cities, which is the urban plaza,as well as the politics of space and the in-depth interpretation of space culture. This study uses techniques from many other fields that are related to spatial ideas, including philosophy, political science, cultural studies, and geography. This study expands the cultural space of post-modernist interpretation of cultural depth of character based on the theoretical paradigm in multidisciplinary cross-application in order to enhance individuals’awareness of urban plaza cultural forms and further their understanding of its political and cultural space power traits as well as underlying meaning. This paper examines the role and culture of urban plaza from the perspectives of numerous well-known spatial culture theories in the context of the analysis. In addition to identifying the nature of the cultural politics, this paper addresses the significance of spatial politics of urban plazas. 展开更多

With the focus of urban regeneration gradually shifting to the community level, community regeneration has become an important path for improving residents' quality of life and the governance of grassroots society. How to innovate the governance model and how to improve the community public space utilization efficiency become vital questions. From the perspective of property rights regime, this paper puts forward the theoretical framework of “property rights regime-governance model-space utilization,” and argues that the property rights regime can be adjusted through the subdivision of property rights, which can change the governance model of public space and affect the space utilization efficiency. Through an in-depth investigation of the community regeneration of Shanghai KIC Garden, this study finds that different property rights regimes affect the process and results of collective action in public space governance, and the monocentric governance model formed by the concentration of governmental power can easily lead to the governance dilemmas such as rent-seeking, ineffective supervision, and information asymmetry. By subdividing and decentralizing property rights, social organizations, and community residents can be introduced to participate in the process of spatial governance, so as to facilitate the sinking of governance centers to the grassroots level and form a polycentric governance model. Moreover, multiple stakeholders can be motivated to make full use of public space through the property rights regime adjustment, and the public space utilization efficiency can be enhanced as a result. 展开更多

Major function oriented zoning (MFOZ hereafter) is the guideline for optimizing the spatial pattern of regional development in China, which entails both theoretical and methodological innovation in the academic field of economic geography. This study analyzes the basic features of territorial function and puts forward a spatial equilibrium model for regional development for the first time. It argues that there exists a trend of regional convergence in the average value which indicates the comprehensive development status of any region. Based on this finding, the study illustrates that the formation of functional zone should be conducive to the narrowing of regional gap and that free flow of resources between regions is the prerequisite to spatial equilibrium. It also investigates the impact of territorial functional evolution on the process of spatial equilibrium and suggests that the maximization of benefits derived from zoning proposal is interrelative with the method of regional division and the degree of understanding towards the temporal changes of territorial function. Furthermore, this study goes on to examine the scientific foundation of several issues concerning the reconciliation between contradictory functions of development and protection, the selection of indicators and the spatial and temporal features of MFOZ. It is then probes into the rationality of achieving dual goals of efficiency and equality simultaneously through three-dimensional flow and spatial equilibrium. The paper ends with discussions on the position, implementation and coordination of MFOZ from the perspective of institutional arrangements of spatial governance including law, planning and government policy. 展开更多

Rural spatial governance has become an important part of the spatial governance system under the unified management of urban and rural spaces.In-depth theoretical and practical research on rural spatial governance in terms of promoting national spatial planning can help improve the planning and regulation system of rural space.Beginning with a description of rural spatial governance, this paper constructs a theoretical analysis framework of rural spatial governance based on the comprehensive perspective of spatial governance. The study also discusses the internal processes and feasible paths of rural spatial governance in territorial spatial planning and outlines the theoretical and practical research for enhancing rural spatial governance. The conclusions are as follows:(1)Rural spatial governance starts with the coordination theory of human-land relationships in the rural regional system.Through planning and negotiation, governance has effective regulation of rural space and allocates spatial rights in an orderly manner.Rural spatial governance highlights the comprehensive governance processes that combine"top-down"and"bottom-up"participation by multiple subjects.(2)Through the"action-efficiency-target"system,the comprehensive governance analysis framework of"matter-organization-ownership"in rural space provides an effective scheme for constructing rural spatial governance.Rural spatial governance is characterized by both rigidity and flexibility, the interaction between physical space and spatial relationships, and the superposition of spatial ownership and spatial organization.(3)The rural spatial governance features of interconnecting various scales(regional–village–plot)are conducive to improving the rural spatial governance system.(4)The governance means, participation modes, and value-sharing mechanisms of rural spatial governance help enrich the territorial spatial planning system, promote the integration of multiple regulations, refine the regulation of land use,and ensure good rural governance and ecological governance. 展开更多

Reasonable development and utilization of spatial resources in the coastal zone not only affects the development quality of the marine economy but also impacts the utilization efficiency of spatial resources, playing an important role in regional sustainable development.Depending on the natural, economic, and societal characteristics of a region, research topics such as using relevant methods to divide the coastline, proper spatial development of the coast, protecting coastal zones, and achieving higher spatial resource distribution efficiency have recently become hot topics in geographic research. Most of the scholars construct the evaluation index system from the perspective of economic and ecological factors and undertake some exploration of the division methods. However, the selection of indicators for a coastal zone needs a different and more scientific approach. There is a need for emphasizing the overall strategy of land-ocean integration in developing spatial resources in a coastal zone.Taking the coastal zone in Ningbo as an example, this paper develops a new evaluation framework and spatial function regionalization method that is used to divide the coastline and coastal zone.Based on the perspective of overall strategy for the land and ocean,we evaluate the suitability of coastline development. We then propose the spatial function regionalization of the coastal zone. Finally, based on the status quo of spatial development in Ningbo,we divide the coastal zone into ecological space, production space and living space, and propose adjustment directions and control requirements for the different types of spatial layouts. 展开更多

County-level administrative divisions and main functional areas are two basic governance systems that act concurrently on county-level geographical units. The administrative division governance focuses on local administration and regular social services, while the main functional area governance focuses on differentiated territorial space development. This paper summarizes the emerging trends and requirements of countylevel spatial governance in China and analyzes the coupling relationship of county-level administrative divisions and main functional areas. Then, the paper proposes to develop an interactive mechanism for the two systems, with administrative divisions focusing on local administration and social governance, and main functional areas focusing on strength complementation and differentiated development. In addition,it puts forward a new county-level spatial governance model featuring a coupling relationship of administrative and functional systems that is well matched with the coordination mechanism. It may provide a reference for improving administrative divisions, the main functional area policy system, and their dynamic adjustments. 展开更多
