As an exquisite literary device that incarnates the repressed anxiety or fear of the self, which is often employed in Gothic or Romantic writings, the uncanny double works as a peculiar topos to belie and undermine the idea of modem subjectivity as an autonomous individual. Roxana deploys it with dexterity and power as a significant way to explore modem subjectivity. Amy largely plays the primitive double, while she also exhibits how the connotation of the double is historically altered. Susan as the uncanny double narcissism embodies Roxana's desire for a non-split self as well as self-fear, and her killing unavoidably leads to the suicidal destruction of Roxana herself.展开更多

While the concept of"The uncanny"is characterized by both strangeness and doubleness, to comprehend the uncanniness of The Woman Warrior more deeply, it is necessary to perceive the pervasively entailed doubleness in the story. Through analyzing the recurring images of ghost and silence, which stand for the source of the strangeness, we try to perceive the doubleness in the text from the perspective of the author's Chinese-American identity. We conclude that Kinston fabricates the multilayered uncanniness in the story through the entangled multi-doublness and constructed identity struggle.展开更多

The anonymous first-person narrator, preoccupied with the social and psychological correlations between the city and wandering crowd, interprets his perception of the crowd as an inexhaustible spectacle. As the narrator experiences different phases of spectatorship, he ultimately realizes the inscrutability and impenetrability of the city through his observation of the old man of the crowd. This paper suggests that the narrator’s failure in seeing and reading the old man of the crowd renders an uncanny effect of urban spectatorship.展开更多

In a silent film adaptation of "The Little Match Girl" the French filmmaker Jean Renoir transports us into an avant-garde world of consumerism and commodification that seems at odds with Andersen's original vision. Yet Renoir's film is remarkably resonant with Andersen's own pre-cinematic imagination even as it produces a different inflection of the uncanny. The match girl is turned into a femme enfant fatale and her illu- minated visions are redirected away from the comforts of home to a world of artifice and melodrama.展开更多
