From the early Taoist diagrams of the human body to the end of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,Taoists exaggerated and deformed the human spine in a shape-shifting manner. It is likely that medical practitioners were influenced by this style of representation, and there are also numerous diagrams of the human body with the curved spine in the lateral-view diagrams of viscera and Ming Tang Tu(明堂图Acupuncture and Moxibustion Chart),which constantly show the human torso in an elliptical“egg shape”.No later than the Ming dynasty, medical practitioners began to depict the actual physiological spinal curve of the human body.By the Qing dynasty, the depiction of the spinal curve in medical diagrams of the human figure showed a tendency to part ways with the Taoist freehand style of the previous generation.Although the representation of the curve of the spine was very crude, later medical images of the human body at least gradually straightened the spine and no longer depicted it in a shape-shifting manner. However, the curved spine in Taoist diagrams of the human body continued to exist, and the presentation of the curved spine never changed. This way of depicting its appearance, which is very different from reality,is shaped by Taoism's special way of perceiving and viewing the body, and may also contain another form of truth. 展开更多

Recent trends suggest that Chinese herbal medicine formulas(CHM formulas)are promising treatments for complex diseases. To characterize the precise syndromes, precise diseases and precise targets of the precise targets between complex diseases and CHM formulas,we developed an artificial intelligence-based quantitative predictive algorithm(DeepTCM).DeepTCM has gone through multilevel model calibration and validation against a comprehensive set of herb and disease data so that it accurately captures the complex cellular signaling, molecular and theoretical levels of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).As an example, our model simulated the optimal CHM formulas for the treatment of coronary heart disease(CHD)with depression, and through model sensitivity analysis,we calculated the balanced scoring of the formulas.Furthermore,we constructed a biological knowledge graph representing interactions by associating herb-target and gene-disease interactions. Finally,we experimentally confirmed the therapeutic effect and pharmacological mechanism of a novel model-predicted intervention in humans and mice. This novel multiscale model opened up a new avenue to combine“disease syndrome”and“macro micro”system modeling to facilitate translational research in CHM formulas. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese Medicine has played an important role in the prevention and treatment of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 epidemic. But in views of different TCM scholars there are different opinions about disease name, characteristic of etiology, law of pathogenesis about this epidemic.Based on related literatures, this article overviews of the characteristics of TCM etiology, law of pathogenesis and methods of syndrome differentiation, hoping to find research method that fit in with TCM clinical practice.Prerequisite of treatment is identifying the cause. The clinical manifestations of patients are important to TCM,and the etiological attributes can be inferred from the clinical manifestations.SARS-CoV-2 belongs to exogenous etiological factors, but there are different opinions about its characteristics of six pathogenic factors.Cold,Dampness,Warm,Dry,Toxin,Summer-heat,Wind,are all involved. Thus, different understanding of the pathogenesis and the law of transmission is caused.Such as cold and dampness hurt Yang, furthermore, consumed of Qi;dampness and toxin infected from external environment, turbid dampness produced inside the body;dryness affecting lungs and consume of Yin;warm-heat-turbid-toxin affected lungs, stomach and intestine;and then produced phlegm stagnation or blood stasis, furthermore consumed Qi and Yin.Based on those differences, methods of syndrome differentiation in treatment of COVID-19 are diverse, which contain pattern differentiation of zang-fu organs, pattern differentiation of Wei-defence,Qi,Ying nutrients and blood;pattern differentiation by the eight principles, and pattern differentiation of six meridians.Because of SARS-CoV-2 can spread to the whole country or even the whole world in a short period of time, its pathogenic nature should be roughly the same.So studying the treatment of COVID-19 based on clinical cases, refining the similarities and differences in the clinical presentation of patients with different subtypes during the epidemic, clarification of the etiologic attribution and evolutionary patterns of disease mechanisms, developing a comprehensive understanding of COVID-19 in Chinese medicine is needed.Furthermore, getting a full understanding of COVID-19,and providing reference for the prevention and treatment of unknown infectious diseases. 展开更多

Background:Rosa chinensis Jacq.and Rosa rugosa Thunb.are not only of ornamental value, but also edible flowers and the flower buds have been listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia as traditional medicines. The two plants have some differences in efficacy, but the flower buds are easily confused for similar traits. In addition,large-scale cultivation of ornamental rose flowers may lead to a decrease in the effective components of medicinal roses. Therefore,it is necessary to study the chemical composition and make quality evaluation of Rosae Chinensis Flos(Yueji)and Rosae Rugosae Flos(Meigui). Methods:In this study,40 batches of samples including Meigui and Yueji from different regions in China were collected to establish high-performance liquid chromatography fingerprints. Then, the fingerprints data was analyzed using principal component analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, and partial least squares discriminant analysis analysis chemometrics to obtain information on intergroup differences, and non-targeted metabolomic techniques were applied to identify and compare chemical compositions of samples which were chosen from groups with large differences.Differential compounds were screened by orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis and S-plot,and finally multi-component quantification was performed to comprehensively evaluate the quality of Yueji and Meigui. Results:The similarity between the fingerprints of 40 batches roses and the reference print R was 0.73 to 0.93,indicating that there were similarities and differences between the samples.Through principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis of fingerprints data, the samples from different origins and varieties were intuitively divided into four groups.Partial least-squares discriminant analysis analysis showed that Meigui and Yueji cluster into two categories and the model was reliable.A total of 89 compounds were identified by high resolution mass spectrometry, mainly were flavonoids and flavonoid glycosides,as well as phenolic acids.Eight differential components were screened out by orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis and S-plot analysis.Quantitative analyses of the eight compounds, including gallic acid, ellagic acid, hyperoside, isoquercitrin, etc.,showed that Yueji was generally richer in phenolic acids and flavonoids than Meigui, and the quality of Yueji from Shandong and Hebei was better. It is worth noting that Xinjiang rose is rich in various components, which is worth focusing on more in-depth research. Conclusion:In this study, the fingerprints of Meigui and Yueji were established. The chemical components information of roses was further improved based on non-targeted metabolomics and mass spectrometry technology. At the same time, eight differential components of Meigui and Yueji were screened out and quantitatively analyzed. The research results provided a scientific basis for the quality control and rational development and utilization of Rosae Chinensis Flos and Rosae Rugosae Flos, and also laid a foundation for the study of their pharmacodynamic material basis. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The most effective treatment for knee joint pain is total knee arthroplasty(TKA),but the risk of pain and swelling in patients after surgery is high.Ice application, ankle pump exercise and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers are the primary clinical treatments after surgery.However,long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers can easily cause gastrointestinal damage.Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)ointments and tuina therapy integrate TCM and manipulation, which effectively promotes the penetration of TCM into the skin lesions, improves local blood circulation and inflammatory reaction and has good long-term effects on patients.AIM To evaluate the efficacy of TCM ointment combined with tuina therapy in the treatment of pain and swelling after TKA.METHODS The randomized controlled clinical trial enrolled 80 patients who underwent TKA via the same procedure. The patients were randomly divided among the treatment group(n=40)and the control group(n=40).The control group was given an analgesia pump in addition to oral painkillers as the postoperative intervention. The treatment group received TCM ointment with tuina therapy in addition to the analgesia pump and oral painkillers in the postoperative period. The following variables were recorded 3 d before surgery and 3 d,7 d and 14 d after surgery:Visual analogue scale(VAS)score;skin temperature;circumferences at 15 cm above and below the patella;maximum active knee flexion angle;and the knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome score(KOOS).RESULTS After treatment,VAS was significantly lower in the treatment group than the control group at 7 d(t=7.536,P<0.001)and 14 d(t=8.563,P<0.001).The skin temperature of participants in the treatment group was significantly lower than that in the control group at 7 d(t=2.968,P=0.004)and 14 d(t=4.423,P<0.001).The circumference values of the two positions in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group at 7 d[t=2.315,P=0.023(above);t=2.121,P=0.037(below)]and 14 d[t=2.374,P=0.020(above);t=2.095,P=0.039(below)].After 14 d of treatment, the maximum active knee flexion angle and KOOS of the two groups were significantly improved but were significantly higher in the treatment group(P<0.05 for both).CONCLUSION TCM ointment and tuina therapy have significant advantages over standard care in the treatment of pain and swelling after TKA.This additional treatment may improve knee function but additional studies are needed to confirm our observations. 展开更多
