Moreover, it examines students' initial perceptions and course performance regarding the introductory accounting course. Participants in this study were 120 students from Technological Educational Institute of Kavala, School of Business and Economics (3 departments), who were asked to complete a survey instrument. The instrument used eleven statements regarding students' perceptions (such as difficulty and motivation of the course) of the first accounting course. The main factors affect students' decisions to follow accounting and seem to be similar with other researchers' findings (Geiger & Ogilby, 2000). Future research could be used larger sample from different countries and the survey could also be used for a longer time period.展开更多

This debate presents a major challenge for FVA going forward and standard setters' push to extend FVA into other areas. In this article, we highlight three important issues as an attempt to make sense of the debate. First, much of the controversy results from confusion about what is new and different about FVA. Second, while there are legitimate concerns about marking to market (or pure FVA) in times of financial crisis, it is less clear that these problems apply to FVA as stipulated by the accounting standards, be it IFRS or U.S. GAAP. Third, historical cost accounting (HCA) is unlikely to be the remedy. There are a number of concerns about HCA as well and these problems could be larger than those with FVA.展开更多

While IFRS are supposed to improve international comparisons by harmonisation and definition of strong principles, Ball (2006) and Nobes (2006) were concerned about differences in the application of IFRS cross-countries and firms. Barth, Landsman & Lang (2008) stated that the flexibility of principles- based International Accounting Standards (IAS) could create incentives for firms to manage earnings. This paper contributes to analyse the impact of IFRS on accounting quality for European firms. The findings show that for firms in the European Union (EU) IFRS produce a negative effect on accounting quality that continues after 2005, when IFRS becomes mandatory. By contrast, for European firms which are not EU members the IFRS adoption increases accounting quality. These results support the concerns about IFRS application and flexibility and indicate that accounting quality does not improve just because the adoption of IFRS is mandatory.展开更多

On the one hand, as managerial accounting is one important branch of accounting(the other important branch is financial accounting), some of its characters should be closely connected with accounting. On the other hand, managers need managerial accounting information for enterprise operation(especially for internal management control) decisions, so, managerial accounting should also be in accordance with the enterprise's operation and its management control. Therefore, combined with the existed research of accounting(especially financial accounting research) and for the development requirement of Chinese enterprises, this paper will mainly discuss the relation between accounting objectives and managerial accounting's system and put forward an idea of constructing an applicable reporting system of managerial accounting based on the operation mode in Chinese modern enterprises. This study will develop the accounting reports research(including external reports and internal reports) both in the field of theory and that of practice.展开更多

We use farm yields, revenues and incomes as indicators of economic performance, and greenhouse gas emissions, and direct and indirect energy consumption as indicators of climate change effects. According to our data, farms with higher yields, revenues and income are responsible for a greater environmental impact, measured in total gigajoules of energy consumed and tons of carbon dioxide emitted, than farms with a lower economic performance. Results show that in our sample the achievement of higher yields is attributable to the greater use of chemical inputs and fossil fuels and not to innovative and sustainable farming practices. The results indicate that accounting for climate change effects is not only possible but also necessary to provide more accurate information on the overall costs and benefits of farming. Greater transparency in accounting information should serve to highlight which farming activities are better able to reduce climate change impacts.展开更多

As YU Xu-ying said, it not only embodies the concept of technology, also reflects the fixed concept of social culture. Viewing from the cultural point, this paper analyses the applying status quo of management accounting in China. Its main viewpoints are as follows: management accounting is originated from the West, and its appearance is built on the basis of the West thought of management, so, to a certain degree, it is influenced by the West culture. In fact, its application in China is in a new cultural circumstance so that it is certainly influenced by the Chinese culture, especially the Chinese traditional culture; thus one of the important reasons for the undesirable application of management accounting in China is the difference between the East culture and the West culture. Therefore, the special cultural factor of China should be considered in order to promote what is beneficial and to abolish what is harmful if management accounting is widely applied in China.展开更多

The reasons for the approval of these accounting regulations are presented in the approval diploma itself, the existence of a strong fragmentation and outdated accounting standardization for the public sector. This paper intends to analyze the public accounting reform in Portugal based on the SNC-AP and the impacts that it will determine in public institutions in terms of accounting in relation to the previous POC-P regime and sectoral plans as well as the resources involved in the Implementation. Bradshaw, et al. (2004), Gelos & WEI (2005) stated that financial reporting quality is fundamental for investors and it affects international capital movements. Following Schipper & Vicent (2003), the authors estimated accounting quality by abnormal accruals and earnings persistence. The authors' contribution consists of investigating a huge number of firms from 17 European countries using unbalanced panel data. The authors found evidence that economic conditions affect accounting quality: big firms and those with high current earnings exhibit better financial information. These results are robust because they do not depend on the accounting quality proxy, even when the authors estimated regression with economical and financial factors alone or together. Financial performance does not seem to affect accounting quality. However, this relation is not linear because in high leveraged firms, the capital structure becomes determinant.展开更多

In order to analyze the relevant theories of environmental accounting development at home and abroad, we use the historical measurement research and hierarchical division methods to systematiccally review the theoretical literatures and research progress. It is concluded that:(1) The development of foreign environmental accounting focuses on the formulation of industry norms, the interpretation of regulations and policies, and the organization of the overall structural framework. Relevant environmental costs, environmental accounting, uncertainties and environmental accounting information disclosure throughout the study of Western environmental accounting. The theory is applied to practice and tested in the free market.(2) Domestic related research is mostly based on comprehensive considerations. It started late. Although the overall environmental accounting framework is basically formed and related laws and regulations are gradually improved, there are still some: the environmental accounting subsystem is not clear, and the accounting standards are not unified. Through the combing of domestic and international environmental accounting theories and combining with China's actual national conditions, this paper proposes that in the field of environmental accounting, China needs to further improve relevant legal norms, improve the environmental accounting theory system, clarify the field of environmental accounting research, and determine environmental accounting requirements and methods.展开更多

One of the major purposes of accounting is to help investors provide reliable, comparable and accurate information. If accounting data are informative about fundamental values and changes in values, they should be correlated with stock price changes. This study provides theory and evidence showing how accounting variables explain stock returns and examines the relationship between the stock returns and accounting variables of listed non financial companies in ISE-100 Indice for 2006-2008 period by using panel data methodology. Empirical analysis consists of 192 observations of 64 companies in years 2006-2008 to examine the effects of inventory, accounts receivable, gross margin, operating expense, return on assets, cash flow, leverage, liquidity, price/earnings, return on equity on stock returns. The results of the study confirm that the predicted roles of fundamental factors and stock returns are significantly related to gross margin, cash flow, leverage and equity variables. The model explains about 13.35 % of the variation of annual stock returns with the leverage variable with most of the significant power.展开更多

Ten participants were interviewed. An analysis of their interview transcripts, using the constant comparative method, discloses the following reasons why they do not register as members: no added benefits to current employment, difficulty in filling in the application forms, high cost of membership and lack of ambition to become accountants. The findings of this study provide insights to the professional accounting bodies and academics on the accounting graduates' lack of interest to become accountants.展开更多

All the countries of economic integration in the world demand common accounting information so as to promote the multilateral effect. The new accounting standards in our country are carded out in complicated internal and external economic and political circumstances, which makes listed companies have to take a lot into consideration when they use them. This thesis mainly deals with the international and domestic accounting environment at present and how to treat the problems of the application of the new accounting standards that have appeared in the past one year. At the end of the paper, some suggestions and solutions to the problems are proposed for reference only.展开更多
