The Essence and Implementation of Ideological and Political Education within College English Curricula: A Grounded Theory Analysis

This study adopts the grounded theory approach to critically examine the essence and implementation of Ideological and Political Education(IPE)within college English curricula at Chinese Universities.We analyzed a corpus of 80 award-winning lesson plans from the“Teaching Star Competition”held by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press to establish specific constituents that comprise IPE and identify the instructional methodologies incorporated in the teaching process.The research shows that IPE strategically merges language proficiency training with civic education,aiming to cultivate a strong national identity,solid cultural pride,and global competencies.To be more detailed,the core categories of IPE encapsulate critical thinking,professional ethics,and cross-cultural communication skills,which are based on the innovative use of technological resources and adaptive pedagogical strategies.IPE has also elaborated on the comprehensive assessment mechanisms to measure cognitive and affective outcomes,making it a multidimensional activity.Following a three-stage coding process,this study aims to contribute to this discussion regarding ideological and political education integrated into Chinese higher education institutions.The finding and conclusion in this study drawn for future curriculum developments and reformulation of educational policy suggest ways IPE could better serve in fostering well-rounded individuals capable of contributing to national and global contexts. 展开更多

Referring to the questionnaire survey and literature materials, this paper describes the current situation of college students' insufficient autonomous English learning ability and thefactors that influence this ability; it also suggests feasible suggestions under the network environment. Students (N= 178) from different grades, majors, universities and areas responded to a questionnaire survey, and the collected data were analyzed. The results indicate that complex external environment and insufficient internal subject cognition influence college students' autonomous English learning ability. Finally, this paper suggests that a good network environment is necessary for autonomous learners to enhance insufficient autonomous English learning ability and interaction, continuous thinking and cultural introduction are also indispensable to develop this ability. 展开更多

Referring to the questionnaire surveys and literature materials, this paper describes the current situation of college students' English oral expression ability, the reasons for lack of such ability and possible solutions. This research used a questionnaire survey to collect data from 146 college students from different grades, majors, universities and areas. The result shows that the deficiency in college students' English oral expression ability can be explained on two levels, spiritual level and oral level. Spiritual level shows that college students don't always have thoughts while others are communicating with them in English; oral level includes two aspects, one is that they always have no idea of how to express their thoughts well and the other is that they fail to always express themselves clearly and exactly. It is suggested that a good language environment is necessary for students to practice English pronunciation, understand culture from English speaking countries, and enhance listening skill to overcome language anxiety in communication. 展开更多

Recently,applying instructional videos to stimulate students’motivation for English acquisition has become increasingly widespread in China.Whether utilizing instructional video in EFL teaching is instructive or not remains a hot issue.On the basis of linguistic theory of employing instructional video in EFL teaching,the paper is focused on exploring the effects of utilizing authentic video in College oral English Classroom.According to the study and analysis,the writer concludes that instructional video is fairly effective in college oral English classroom,even though there have been some problems and obstacles.It is suggested that English professors in China should make full use of instructional video to create an authentic language teaching and learning context where students can acquire English language naturally and effectively.The results from this study will offer useful information for the utilization of instructional video in EFL teaching.It is also suggested that educators and scholars in China should do more researches and studies on how to facilitate EFL teaching and learning by applying with instructional video. 展开更多

The Association between Problematic Internet Use,Resilience,and Fatigue in First-Year Medical College Students in China:A Moderated Mediation Model

Background:Resilience is crucial for medical college students to thrive in the highly stressful environment of medical education.However,the prevalence of problematic internet use(PIU)in this population may negatively impact their resilience.This study investigated the influence of problematic online gaming(PG)and problematic social media use(PSMU)on the resilience of medical college students in China.Methods:A sample of 5075 first-year medical college students from four Chinese universities was studied.PG served as the independent variable,resilience as the dependent variable,fatigue as the mediator,and PSMU as the moderator.Structural equation modeling was conducted using LISREL 8.80.Additionally,a moderated mediation model was evaluated using the jAMM module in jamovi 2.6.13.Results:The study’s findings revealed significant negative correlations between resilience and the variables of PG,PSMU,and fatigue.Fatigue mediated the relationship between PG and resilience(B=−0.04,95%CI=[−0.05,−0.03]).PSMU moderated the direct relationship between PG and resilience with the interaction term PG×PSMU significant(B=−0.004,t=−6.501,p<0.001)and the first stage(PG→fatigue)of the mediation with PG×PSMU significant(B=0.055,t=8.351,p<0.001).The detrimental effects of PG on resilience were more pronounced among individuals with lower levels of PSMU.Conclusion:This study concluded that addressing PIU,particularly PG,is essential for fostering resilience in medical college students.While PSMU itself is maladaptive,the underlying social media engagement may serve a protective role through social support in mitigating the adverse effects of PG on resilience. 展开更多

To explore the adoption of formative assessment in oral English test Validity study of oral test scores was performed in PhD candidates of 2011.Through linear relevance analysis,it is concluded that the relevance coefficient between oral score and overall score is 0.751 (P <0.001),the relevance coefficient between oral score and listening score is 0.530 (P <0.001),and the results indicate overall score and listening score have a positive relevancy with oral score.The result showed a positive correlation of oral test scores with written examination scores.Questionnaires modeled with the 5-point Likert Scale revealed a moderate supportive attitude of students on this formative assessment.The results are:80.1% of students indicated they feel satisfied and very satisfied with such oral English evaluation form,77.9% of students consider this oral score reflects their real oral English proficiency.This indicates that most students feel satisfied about the form and score in this oral exam.Through effective combination between formative evaluation method and summative evaluation method,it can effectively coordinate the relation between teaching and learning in oral English teaching practice,stimulate students'study initiative,and play a positive role in improving students'overall oral English proficiency. 展开更多

The adequacy of language education largely depends on the favorable and unfavorable emotions that teachers and students experience throughout the education process.Simply said,emotional factors play a key role in improving the quality of language teaching and learning.Furthermore,these emotional factors also promote the well-being of language teachers and learners and place them in a suitable mental condition.In view of the favorable impact of emotional factors on the mental health of language teachers and learners,many educational scholars around the world have studied these factors,their background,and their pedagogical consequences.Nonetheless,the majority of previous studies have employed traditional research methods in assessing these variables and their influences on language teachers’and learners’mental health.Because of the complex and dynamic quality of emotional factors,traditional research approaches often fail to evaluate these factors and their dynamic,non-linear connections with teachers’and learners’mental health and well-being.Accordingly,some novel research approaches are required to measure the dynamicity and complexity of emotional factors in language education settings.To address this call,the current state-of-the-art conceptual article seeks to provide new insights for investigating emotional factors and their potential impact on language teachers’and learners’mental states.This study also intends to offer a comprehensive list of emerging methods that take into account the complex and dynamic nature of emotional variables.Finally,the study outlines the potential implications of this review for educational researchers. 展开更多

Although investigating metaphors in advertising is gaining in popularity, there are still certain unresolved arguments, such as the interaction between elements of different modalities. This study,composed of three behavioral experiments, aims to identify how verbal anchoring(literal anchoring, metaphor anchoring and unrelated anchoring) influences the processing of pictorial metaphors in advertising, by observing the cognitive and affective indicators, advertising comprehension and advertising likeability. The results showed 1) that metaphors in pictorial modality were recognized more quickly than those in verbal modality, 2) that verbal anchoring facilitated participants ’ comprehending and appreciating of pictorial metaphors and 3) that literally-anchored metaphors with a moderate level of novelty yielded the most favorable cognitive responses. The study not only enriches the existing theoretical framework of multimodal metaphors in advertising, but also proposes an optimal match between pictorial metaphors and verbal elements, for advertisers and manufacturers to design effective multimodal advertisements. 展开更多

The proper vacuum drying process parameters: vacuum drying temperature is 80 to 100℃, drying time is 5 h and vacuum is 0.06 to 0.07MPa. Objective: To summarize the clinical experiences of 21 patients treated with tricuspid valve replacement (TVR) and investigate the surgical indications and methods. Methods: Data from 21 patients who underwent TVR from December 2002 to March 2009 were retrospectively collected and analyzed. The mean age was 48.86± 15.37 years (range: 20-72 years). The underlying disease of the patients was classified as rheumatic (n = 10), congenital (n = 8), endocarditis (n = 2) or chest trauma (n = 1). Previous cardiac surgery had been performed in 12 patients (57.14%). Results: In-hospital death occurred in two patients (9.52%). Postoperative morbidities included cardiac failure (n = 2), bleeding related re-operation (n = 1), and plural effusion (n = 2). Conclusion: The early outcomes of TVR were acceptable. At the present time TVR can be performed through optimal perioperative management. 展开更多

AIM: To develop an Arabic version of the ocular surface disease index(OSDI) and to assess its reliability and validity.METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out to validate the Arabic version of the OSDI questionnaire. Initially, forward-backward translation was used to translate the English version of OSDI into Arabic. The translated questionnaire was tested for equivalence and cultural adaptability. Totally 200 subjects were then recruited from a non-clinical population and asked to complete the Arabic version of the OSDI(ARB-OSDI). The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach’s-α. A subgroup of 30 participants was asked to complete the questionnaire on two occasions to test the test-retest reliability.RESULTS: A total of 200 participants were enrolled in the study. The average age of the study participants was 31.21±13.2 y and 57% were male. An acceptable internal consistency level for the ARB-OSDI questionnaire measured by Cronbach’s-α was revealed. All questions showed good internal consistency. Test-retest reliability analysis revealed good stability(interclass correlation coefficient, r=0.832, P<0.001). The construct validity for the questionnaire was also high.CONCLUSION: The ARB-OSDI questionnaire shows very good psychometric properties(acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability). That makes the questionnaire a valid potential tool to use in Arabic-speaking countries to monitor symptoms of dry eye disease in a larger population. 展开更多

The paper introduces initial notions on applying linguistic criteria as the basic ones in the process of creating ME textbooks. Through the historical development and under the influence of extra linguistic factors (globalization of the shipping industry, in particular), ME has accumulated and stored various resources being in current use: vocabulary, grammar and phonology, operational and semiotic systems, specific means of communication, functional models, patterns of narration and description, etc.. The proper linguistic analysis makes a secure foundation for methodology which can guarantee a better quality of ME course books for the 1st and 2nd year maritime students all over the world. 展开更多
