The Transmission of Huizhou Culture to Foreign Students in China-- Under the Context of Soft Power

Culture is an important aspect of soft power.Huizhou Culture is one of the best representations of traditional Chinese culture and has been attached great importance by scholars both at home and aboard.It's vitally important to spread Huizhou Cultural values around the world to improve China's soft power.Foreign students in China are potential advocators of Chinese Culture.The cultural information they get will be transmitted to their own countries.We should take some strategies to promote Huizhou Culture among foreign students so that the charm of Huizhou Culture can be noticed and recognized by many more people.

On the effectiveness of formal instruction in foreign language teaching and learning

Sometimes foreign language teachers find formal instructions unrewarding. This paper intends to find answers to the problems found in the English teaching classroom at university level in China by reviewing the SLA theories on formal instruction and some pedagogical implications drawn from the findings are discussed.

Motivation to Study a Second Foreign Language: A Case of Chinese University Learners of German

Not much research has been done on motivation to study a second,third or even fourth foreign language though learners of such languages have been increasing.To contribute to this,the present study examined German learning motivation of Chinese university students at different proficiency levels.A total of 297 German learners at three different proficiency levels at a university in Beijing filled in the questionnaires,of whom 191 answered the open-ended question and 50 were informally interviewed.Analyses of the data revealed the following major findings;(1)most respondents at cach proficiency level had limited access to and little chance to use German,liked the language,studied it(very)hard and did not think the language was difficult,(2)students at different proficiency levels studied German for similar reasons such as major study/research,further education,future career,interest in foreign language learning and German,and(3)students at higher proficiency levels perceived German to be more difficult and worked harder on it.Students at higher proficiency levels were both integratively and instrumentally more motivated to study German and had greater motivation intensity as well.It is clear that students at different proficiency levels were motivated to study German and that students at the advanced level tended to be more integratively motivated than those at the beginning level.Based on these findings,some suggestions are discussed.

A Comparative Analysis of Syntactic Complexity in Applied Linguistics Abstracts Written by Chinese Novice Writers and Native English Advanced Writers

The rhetorical structure of abstracts has been a widely discussed topic, as it can greatly enhance the abstract writing skills of second-language writers. This study aims to provide guidance on the syntactic features that L2 learners can employ, as well as suggest which features they should focus on in English academic writing. To achieve this, all samples were analyzed for rhetorical moves using Hyland’s five-rhetorical move model. Additionally, all sentences were evaluated for syntactic complexity, considering measures such as global, clausal and phrasal complexity. The findings reveal that expert writers exhibit a more balanced use of syntactic complexity across moves, effectively fulfilling the rhetorical objectives of abstracts. On the other hand, MA students tend to rely excessively on embedded structures and dependent clauses in an attempt to increase complexity. The implications of these findings for academic writing research, pedagogy, and assessment are thoroughly discussed.

Content validity is an important part of language testing.In this paper,the content validity of the CET-4 fast reading test is analyzed in terms of expected response and text input.The result of final research shows that the content validity of the fast reading test is high with some limitations proposed.

Analysis of Iconicity Base on Relevance Theory

Iconicity as one of the very important research items of cognitive linguistics refers to the natural, non-arbitrary rela?tionship between form and meaning. The study of iconicity has great significance of revealing the relationship between concept and cognition and can help people better understand the essence of language. This paper presents an analysis of the three iconicity principles- distance iconicity,quantity iconicity and sequencing iconicity-base on the relevance theory. The purpose of this pa?per is to offer a new dimension to iconicity analysis and finding more connections between the form of language and real mean?ing.

Impacts of Climatic Factors on Runoff Coefficients in Source Regions of the Huanghe River

Runoff coefficients of the source regions of the Huanghe River in 1956-2000 were analyzed in this paper. In the 1990s runoff of Tangnaihai Hydrologic Station of the Huanghe River experienced a serious decrease, which had attracted considerable attention. Climate changes have important impact on the water resources availability. From the view of water cycling, runoff coefficients are important indexes of water resources in a particular catchment. Kalinin baseflow separation technique was improved based on the characteristics of precipitation and streamflow. After the separation of runoff coefficient （R/P）, baseflow coefficient （Br/P） and direct runoff coefficient （Dr/P） were estimated. Statistic analyses were applied to assessing the impact of precipitation and temperature on runoff coefficients （including Dr/P, Br/P and R/P）. The results show that in the source regions of the Huanghe River, mean annual baseflow coefficient was higher than mean annual direct runoff coefficient. Annual runoff coefficients were in direct proportion to annual precipitation and in inverse proportion to annual mean temperature. The decrease of runoff coefficients in the 1990s was closely related to the decrease in precipitation and increase in temperature in the same period. Over different sub-basins of the source regions of the Huanghe River, runoff coefficients responded differently to precipitation and temperature. In the area above Jimai Hydrologic Station where annual mean temperature is -3.9℃, temperature is the main factor influencing the runoff coefficients. Runoff coefficients were in inverse relation to temperature, and precipitation had nearly no impact on runoff coefficients. In subbasin between Jimai and Maqu Hydrologic Station Dr/P was mainly affected by precipitation while R/P and Br/P were both significantly influenced by precipitation and temperature. In the area between Maqu and Tangnaihai hydrologic stations all the three runoff coefficients increased with the rising of annual precipitation, while direct runoff coefficient was inversely proportional to temperature. In the source regions of the Huanghe River with the increase of average annual temperature, the impacts of temperature on runoff coefficients become insignificant.

RAPD Analysis of M_1 Generation of Gladiolus hybridus Hort Treated by EMS

Gladiolus hybridus Hort is one of the world＇s famous cutting flowers. It is very popular because of the big size, bright color, various shape, and long period of bloom. New species should be cultivated in order to meet the consumers＇ need of asking for the new. Among the technologies of cultivating new species of flowers, mutagenic breeding is a shortcut. This study treated corm bud of G. hybridus Hort with EMS of different consistency. Then M1 after treated was analyzed by RAPD. The result showed that EMS was a very effective mutagenic agent for the corm bud of G. hybridus Hort. With the increase of consistency, the mutagenic range increased first, then decreased, among which 0.6% EMS treatment had the biggest influence. However, with the same EMS consistency, there was not close relevancy between the amount of mutagenic agent and the divergence of plant＇s genomes, which offered a molecular basis for selecting plants with good mutation.

English Forum on Medical Humanities of SMMU:An interdisciplinary innovative teaching practice

To conform to the college English teaching reform from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the vital transfer era, the Foreign Language Department of Second Military Medical University (SMMU) launched an English for Medical Academic Purpose (EMAP) curriculum with English Forum on Medical Humanities (EFMH), a project-based teaching practice. Based on Rogers' learner-centered humanistic teaching approach which emphasizes students' involvement and experiences in learning, EFMH puts students and their practice in a central place. After four-year exploration and operation, the Forum has developed from a small-scaled embryo into an internationalized, standardized and professionalized event, having produced fruitful outcomes. It is expected that the success of EFMH will provide inspiring experiences and enlightenments for higher medical education in terms of academic English teaching and teachers' responsibilities to foster high-quality medical students.

Clinical study inpatient-reported outcomes after binocular implantation of aspheric intraocular lens of different negative spherical aberrations

Objective: To compare patient-reported outcomes after implantation of the ZA9003 intraocular lens(IOLs), or the MCX11 ASP IOLs or the spherical IOLs(HQ-201HEP). Methods: Prospective nonrandomized controlled trial was used. A total of 105 patients(210 eyes) were divided into three groups according to the type of IOLs: ZA9003(35 patients, 70 eyes), MCX11 ASP(35 patients, 70 eyes) or HQ-201HEP(35 patients, 70 eyes). The main outcome was scores of Catquest nine-item short-form questionnaire. Additional outcome was best corrected visual acuities, spherical aberration(SA) and total higher-order aberrations(HOAs). Results: The global score was significantly lower in the spherical IOL group than the aspherical IOL group of-020 μm SA(P < 0.05) and the aspherical IOL group of-027 μm SA(P < 0.05), and no significant difference was found in the global score between the aspherical IOL group of-020 μm SA than the aspherical IOL group of-027 μm SA(P > 0.05). Significant differences were also found in question 2, question 5, question 6 and question 8 between the spherical IOLs and the aspherical IOLs. Conclusion: Implantation of an aspherical IOL could improve vision-related quality of life compared with a spherical IOL. However, there were no statistically significant differences in vision-related quality of life between aspheric IOLs with different negative spherical aberrations.

INVESTIGATION ON STABILITY OF PZT/EPOXY PIEZOCOMPOSITE WITH PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE

With the universal test machine and temperature test chamber, the effect of pressure and temperature on the behavior of 1-3 and 1-3-2 piezocomposites prepared with PZT/epoxy in our lab has been investigated through electrical impedance and dielectric analysis. The permittivity, resonant frequency and dielectric loss of the composites have been measured under vertical stress and temperature, and the variety of the material properties under pressure and temperature could also be obtained. The pressure and temperature stability of the composites have been assessed through experiments. The data of these two types of composites indicated that the stability of 1-342 composite with pressure was better than that of 1-3 composite, and two composites have almost the same dielectric stability with temperature. However, 1-3-2 composite showed slower frequency variation than 1-3 composite.

The two-factor model of evaluating mining rights of coal resources based on options

MRCR could be regarded as a multi-stage compounding real option,based on option theory,assuming the convenience yield of coal reserves to be constant,built a one-factor model of valuating MRCR with the stochastic value of coal reserves.On the basis of our one-factor model,set up a two-factor model of evaluating MRCR assuming the convenience yield follows the mean-reverting process.When applied to valuate the MRCR of a coalmine,this model gives higher values than the one-factor model and the NPV.This is because the increase of convenience yield can improve the executive oppor- tunity of MRCR.

Concerning the detailed analysis of the theoretical system of"One Belt and One Road",there lacks a universal theoretical framework and the foundation of the Chinese philosophy and literature."One Belt and One Road"is not only a new developmental strategy,but also a new proposition for reconstruction of our cultural status.

Investigations and thoughts of the ethics in genetic discrimination

A questionnaire research in ethics was conducted to get the view of students of medical universities in Shanghai on genomics and genetic discrimination. We find that 66% respondents indicated their willingness to understand the genetic information and 79% of respondents mind their own genetic information be aware of by other people. In contrast, 77% of the respondents believe that medical organization are not able to protect personal genetic information from disclose. Hence, it is significant to take some measures to preserve citizen's genetic information privacy. Depending on our results, we put forward our suggestion to this problem.

Grice＇s theory of conversational implicature

Understanding an utterance is far from proposition analysis and literal meaning interpretation. It is the unity of what is said and what is implicated. Grice＇s theory of conversational implicature provides some explicit account of how it is possible to mean more than what is literally expressed by the conventional sense of the linguistic expressions uttered. Using this theory, we can infer the speaker＇s real attention, appreciate figure of speech in literary work, and improve our communicative competence.

How to lead foreign students into Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is becoming much more international and widely accepted. More and more foreign students come to China's Mainland to study this great yet mysterious discipline. However, the current teaching methods are far from satisfaction. This paper analyzes some existing problems and contradictions present in the teaching practices and suggests some measures for improvement.

The Limitation and Development of Elizabeth Gaskell＇s Social Vision

Gaskell, for all her sympathy for the lower orders, responds to questions posed by differences of class with a conciliatory spirit. She writes like a social realist, but when she is confronted with taking a position, she often opts for reconciliation or even escapism. Gaskell＇s ambivalent attitude towards social classes is brought to the forefront in Mary Barton （1847）, which she originally entitled John Barton. The change of the title has led to critical argument that the novel is an artistic failure, and the shift from a political novel with a clear social purpose to a domestic romance which covers up social discontent is too unprepared and comes across as a fantasy on the part of the novelist. This peculiar structure of the novel reveals the limitation of Gaskell＇s social vision as a novelist. In North and South （1852）, Gaskell presents the precarious situation of workers and their tense relations with industrialists in a more balanced way by giving more attention to the thinking and perspective of the employers, a narrative perspective far different from her treatment in Mary Barton which adopts the view of the working poor. The on-going social mobility and the shift of social gravity from the aristocracy to the mercantile, a historical reality which Matthew Arnold clearly delineates in Culture and Anarchy, are truthfully observed and represented by Gaskell and her representation of this new ruler class marks her progressive social view, expressing her optimistic belief in England＇s progress towards an industrial future. In an interval of seven years between the publications of the two novels in question, Gaskell＇s social vision had matured into critical realism.

The relationship between depth of vocabulary knowledge and Iranian EFL learners＇ lexical inferencing strategy use and success

This study was an attempt to examine the relationship between Iranian EFL （English as Foreign Language） learners＇ depth of vocabulary knowledge and their lexical inferencing strategy use and success. The participants in this study were 32 intermediate senior students of Shiraz Azad University majoring in English translation. The Word Associates Test （WAT） （Read, 1993） was used to measure their depth of vocabulary knowledge and lexical inferencing strategy questionnaire which was part of Schmitt （1997）, vocabulary learning strategies as well as a reading passage （Haastrup, 1999）, cited in Nassaji （2004）, were used to determine their lexical inferencing strategy use and success. Results indicate that： （1） Those who have stronger depth of vocabulary knowledge use certain strategies more frequently than those who have weaker depth of vocabulary knowledge; （2） The students with stronger depth of vocabulary knowledge make more effective use of certain types of lexical inferencing strategies. These findings support the importance of depth dimension of vocabulary knowledge and the role it plays in guessing the meaning of unknown words.

Constructing a Harmonious World——Linguistic Studies on the Analects of Confucius

Following Halliday’s view that "if a text is to be described at all,then it should be described properly;and this means by the theories and methods developed in linguistics"(Halliday,2002),we use the theoretical framework and methods developed in Systemic-Functional linguistics to explore "the socio-historical and ideological environment" for the "engendering" (ibid.) of the Analects,the particular contextual features of this great work,the hierarchical structure of Confucius’ main teachings,and also the ways of realizing his ideas in this book by the lexico-grammatical choices.We also discuss the implication and relevance of Confucianism to China and the present world.
