The capture, regeneration, and conversion of CO_(2) from ambient air and flue gas streams are critical aspects of mitigating global warming.Solid sorbents for CO_(2) absorption are very promising as they have high mass transfer areas without energy input and reduce emissions and minimize corrosion as compared to liquid sorbents. However, precisely tunable solid CO_(2) sorbents are difficult to produce. Here,we demonstrate the high-throughput production of hydrogel-based CO_(2)-absorbing particles via liquid jetting.By wrapping a liquid jet consisting of an aqueous solution of cross-linkable branched polyethylenimine(PEI)with a layer of suspension containing hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, monodisperse droplets with a silica nanoparticle coating layer was formed in the air.A stable Pickering emulsion containing PEI droplets was obtained after these ejected droplets were collected in a heated oil bath. The droplets turn into mm-sized particles after thermal curing in the bath. The diameter,PEI content, and silica content of the particles were systematically varied, and their CO_(2) absorption was measured as a function of time.Steam regeneration of the particles enabled cyclic testing, revealing a CO_(2) absorption capacity of 6.5±0.5 mol kg^(−1)solid PEI in pure CO_(2) environments and 0.7±0.3 mol kg^(−1)solid PEI for direct air capture.Several thousands of particles were produced per second at a rate of around 0.5 kg per hour, with a single nozzle. This process can be further scaled by parallelization. The complete toolbox for the design, fabrication, testing, and regeneration of functional hydrogel particles provides a powerful route toward novel solid sorbents for regenerative CO_(2) capture. 展开更多

The presented study deals with the investigation of nonlinear Bogoyavlenskii equations with conformable time-derivative which has great importance in plasma physics and non-inspectoral scattering problems.Travelling wave solutions of this nonlinear conformable model are constructed by utilizing two powerful analytical approaches, namely, the modified auxiliary equation method and the Sardar sub-equation method. Many novel soliton solutions are extracted using these methods.Furthermore,3D surface graphs, contour plots and parametric graphs are drawn to show dynamical behavior of some obtained solutions with the aid of symbolic software such as Mathematica. The constructed solutions will help to understand the dynamical framework of nonlinear Bogoyavlenskii equations in the related physical phenomena. 展开更多

This study presents the Chebyshev polynomials-based Ritz method to examine the thermal buckling and free vibration characteristics of metal foam beams. The analyses include three models for porosity distribution and two scenarios for thermal distribution. The material properties are assessed under two conditions,i.e.,temperature dependence and temperature independence. The theoretical framework for the beams is based on the higher-order shear deformation theory, which incorporates shear deformations with higher-order polynomials. The governing equations are established from the Lagrange equations, and the beam displacement fields are approximated by the Chebyshev polynomials.Numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the effects of thermal load, slenderness, boundary condition(BC),and porosity distribution on the buckling and vibration behaviors of metal foam beams. The findings highlight the significant influence of temperature-dependent(TD)material properties on metal foam beams'buckling and vibration responses. 展开更多

An analytical method for analyzing the thermal vibration of multi-directional functionally graded porous rectangular plates in fluid media with novel porosity patterns is developed in this study.Mechanical properties of MFG porous plates change according to the length, width, and thickness directions for various materials and the porosity distribution which can be widely applied in many fields of engineering and defence technology.Especially, new porous rules that depend on spatial coordinates and grading indexes are proposed in the present work.Applying Hamilton's principle and the refined higher-order shear deformation plate theory, the governing equation of motion of an MFG porous rectangular plate in a fluid medium(the fluid-plate system)is obtained. The fluid velocity potential is derived from the boundary conditions of the fluid-plate system and is used to compute the extra mass. The GalerkinVlasov solution is used to solve and give natural frequencies of MFG porous plates with various boundary conditions in a fluid medium. The validity and reliability of the suggested method are confirmed by comparing numerical results of the present work with those from available works in the literature. The effects of different parameters on the thermal vibration response of MFG porous rectangular plates are studied in detail. These findings demonstrate that the behavior of the structure within a liquid medium differs significantly from that within a vacuum medium.Thereby, they offer appropriate operational approaches for the structure when employed in various mediums. 展开更多

This article presents an exhaustive comparative investigation into the accuracy of gender identification across diverse geographical regions, employing a deep learning classification algorithm for speech signal analysis. In this study, speech samples are categorized for both training and testing purposes based on their geographical origin.Category 1 comprises speech samples from speakers outside of India, whereas Category 2 comprises live-recorded speech samples from Indian speakers.Testing speech samples are likewise classified into four distinct sets, taking into consideration both geographical origin and the language spoken by the speakers.Significantly, the results indicate a noticeable difference in gender identification accuracy among speakers from different geographical areas.Indian speakers, utilizing 52 Hindi and 26 English phonemes in their speech, demonstrate a notably higher gender identification accuracy of 85.75%compared to those speakers who predominantly use 26 English phonemes in their conversations when the system is trained using speech samples from Indian speakers. The gender identification accuracy of the proposed model reaches 83.20%when the system is trained using speech samples from speakers outside of India. In the analysis of speech signals,Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients(MFCCs)serve as relevant features for the speech data. The deep learning classification algorithm utilized in this research is based on a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory(BiLSTM)architecture within a Recurrent Neural Network(RNN)model. 展开更多

For the first time, the isogeometric analysis(IGA) approach is used to model and analyze free and forced vibrations of doubly-curved magneto-electro-elastic(MEE) composite shallow shell resting on the visco-Pasternak foundation in a hygro-temperature environment. The doubly-curved MEE shallow shell types include spherical shallow shell, cylindrical shallow shell, saddle shallow shell, and elliptical shallow shell subjected to blast load are investigated. The Maxwell equation and electromagnetic boundary conditions are used to determine the vary of the electric and magnetic potentials. The MEE shallow shell's equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle and refined higher-order shear theory. Then, the IGA method is used to derive the laws of natural frequencies and dynamic responses of the shell under various boundary conditions. The accuracy of the model and method is verified through reliable numerical comparisons. Aside from this, the impact of the input parameters on the free and forced vibration of the doubly-curved MEE shallow shell is examined in detail. These results may be useful in the design and manufacture of military structures such as warships, fighter aircraft, drones and missiles. 展开更多

Given their numerous functional and architectural benefits, such as improved bearing capacity and increased resistance to elastic instability modes,cold-formed steel(CFS)built-up sections have become increasingly developed and used in recent years, particularly in the construction industry. This paper presents an analytical and numerical study of assembled CFS two single channel-shaped columns with different slenderness and configurations(backto-back,face-to-face,and box). These columns were joined by double-row rivets for the back-to-back and box configurations, whereas they were welded together for the face-to-face design. The built-up columns were filled with ordinary concrete of good strength.Finite element models were applied, using ABAQUS software,to assess mechanical performance and study the influence of assembly techniques on the behavior of cold-formed columns under axial compression.Analytical approaches based on Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 recommendations for un-filled and concrete-filled columns respectively were followed for the numerical analysis, and concrete confinement effects were also considered per American Concrete Institute(ACI)standards for face-to-face and box configurations. The obtained results indicated a good correlation between the numerical results and the proposed analytical methodology which did not exceed 8%.The failure modes showed that the columns failed due to instabilities such as local and global buckling. 展开更多

Background: Impurities are not expected in the final pharmaceutical products. All impurities should be regulated in both drug substances and drug products in accordance with pharmacopeias and ICH guidelines. Three different types of impurities are generally available in the pharmaceutical’s product specification: organic impurities, inorganic impurities, and residual solvents. Residual solvents are organic volatile chemicals used or generated during the manufacturing of drug substances or drug products. Purpose: The aim of this study is to develop a cost-effective gas chromatographic method for the identification and quantification of some commonly used solvents—methanol, acetone, isopropyl alcohol (IPA), methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran (THF), benzene, toluene, and pyridine—in pharmaceutical product manufacturing. This method will be able to identify and quantify the multiple solvents within a single gas chromatographic procedure. Method: A gas chromatography (GC) equipped with a headspace sampler and a flame ionization detector, and a column DB 624, 30-meter-long × 0.32-millimeter internal diameter, 1,8 μm-thick, Brand-Agilent was used to develop this method. The initial GC oven temperature was 40°C and held for 5 minutes. It was then increase to 80˚C at a rate of 2˚C per minute, followed by a further increase to 225˚C at a rate of 30˚C per minute, with a final hold at 225˚C for 10 minutes. Nitrogen was used as a carrier gas at a flow rate of 1.20 mL per minute. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was selected as sample solvent. Results: The developed method is precise and specific. The percent RSD for the areas of six replicate injections of this gas chromatographic method was within 10.0 and the recovery result found within 80.0% to 120.0%. 展开更多

In the articles “Newtons Law of Universal Gravitation Explained by the Theory of Informatons” and “The Gravitational Interaction between Moving Mass Particles Explained by the Theory of Informatons” the gravitational interaction has been explained by the hypothesis that information carried by informatons is the substance of gravitational fields, i.e. the medium that the interaction in question makes possible. From the idea that “information carried by informatons” is its substance, it has been deduced that—on the macroscopic level—a gravitational field manifests itself as a dual entity, always having a field- and an induction component (Egand Bg) simultaneously created by their common sources. In this article we will mathematically deduce the Maxwell-Heaviside equations from the kinematics of the informatons. These relations describe on the macroscopic level how a gravitational field (Eg, Bg) is generated by whether or not moving masses and how spatial and temporal changes of Egand Bgare related. We show that there is no causal link between Egand Bg. 展开更多

In this article we show that the description of the gravitational field as a cloud of g-information implies the phenomenon of “gravitomagnetic” or “gravitational waves”1 and that accelerated mass particles and radioactive decay are sources of such waves. It is also shown that a gravitomagnetic wave propagating in a certain direction can be understood as the macroscopic manifestation of a spatial sequence of informatons whose characteristic angle is fluctuating along that—with the speed of light—speeding “train”. Finally, it is shown that gravitomagnetic waves transport energy in the form of packages carried by informatons. These entities are called “gravitons”. 展开更多

In the context of classical physics, Newton’s law of universal gravitation describes the attraction between two mass particles separated in space. In the same context a vector field Eg, that is not associated with anything substantial, has been introduced as the entity that mediates in the gravitational interactions. In this article, we will show that Egis the mathematical quantity that—at the macroscopic level—fully characterizes the medium that makes the interaction between particles at rest possible. We identify that medium as “the gravitational field”. To define the nature of the gravitational field, we will start from the hypothesis that a material object manifests itself in space by the emission—at a rate proportional to its rest mass—of mass and energy less granular entities that—relative to an inertial reference frame—are rushing away with the speed of light and that are carriers of information referring to the position of their emitter (“g-information”). Because they transport nothing else than information, we call these entities “informatons”. We will show that the expanding cloud of g-information created by the continuous emission of informatons by a mass particle at rest can be fully characterized by the vector field Eg, which implies that that cloud can be identified as the gravitational field of the particle. We will also show that the gravitational interaction between mass particles can be explained as the response of a particle to the disturbance of the symmetry of its “proper” gravitational field by the field that, in its direct vicinity, is created and maintained by other mass particles. 展开更多

In the article “Newtons Law of Universal Gravitation Explained by the Theory of Informatons” the gravitational interaction between mass particles at rest has been explained by the hypothesis that g-information carried by informatons is the substance of the medium that the interaction in question makes possible. It has been showed that, on the macroscopic level, that medium—the “gravitational field”—manifests itself as the vector field Eg. In this article we will deduce from the postulate of the emission of informatons, that the informatons emitted by a moving mass particle carry not only information about the position (g-information) but also about the velocity (“β-information”) of their emitter. It follows that the gravitational field of a moving mass particle is a dual entity always having a field- and an induction-component (Egand Bg) simultaneously created by their common sources: time-variable masses and mass flows and that the gravitational interaction is the effect of the fact that an object in a gravitational field always tends to become “blind” for that field by accelerating according to a Lorentz-like law. 展开更多

In this paper,we consider a multi-crane scheduling problem in rail stations because their operations directly influence the throughput of the rail stations. In particular, the job is not only assigned to cranes but also the job sequencing is implemented for each crane to minimize the makespan of cranes.A dual cycle of cranes is used to minimize the number of working cycles of cranes. The rail crane scheduling problems in this study are based on the movement of containers. We consider not only the gantry moves, but also the trolley moves as well as the rehandle cases are also included.A mathematical model of multi-crane scheduling is developed. The traditional and parallel simulated annealing(SA)are adapted to determine the optimal scheduling solutions.Numerical examples are conducted to evaluate the applicability of the proposed algorithms.Verification of the proposed parallel SA is done by comparing it to existing previous works. Results of numerical computation highlighted that the parallel SA algorithm outperformed the SA and gave better solutions than other considered algorithms. 展开更多

Fenton and ozone treatment was investigated at laboratory scale for the degradation of aqueous solutions of nitrobenzene (NB). Effects of reactants concentration (O3, H2O2, and Fe(Ⅱ)), temperature, and pH on NB degradation were monitored. Reaction kinetic of these processes was also assessed. A rapid reaction took place for Fenton process at higher initial concentration of H2O2, higher temperatures, and more acidic conditions (pH 3). Similarly, ozonation reaction exhibited rapid rates for higher ozone dose, higher temperatures, and more basic conditions (pH 11). Complete NB degradation in 65 min was achieved using Fenton process. The conditions of complete elimination of 100 mg/L of initial NB concentration, were 250 mg/L of H202 concentration, pH 3, and 10 mg/L of Fe(Ⅱ) concentration. Under these conditions, 55% organic carbon elimination was achieved. Total organic carbon mineralization was attained in 240 rain reaction time by Fenton process with 900 mg/L of H202 concentration, and 30 mg/L of Fe(Ⅱ) concentration. Fenton reaction showed a pseudo-first order kinetic; the reaction rate constant was ranged from 0.0226 to 0.0658 min^-1. Complete NB degradation was also achieved for an ozone dose of the order of 2.5 g/L. The ozonation was studied at different ozone doses, different initial pH (7-11) and at different temperatures (15-35℃). NB ozonation kinetic was represented by a bi-molecular kinetic model which was reduced to pseudo-first order kinetic. The pseudo-first order reaction rate constant was determined to increase at 20℃ from 0.004 to 0.020 min^-1 as the used ozone increased from 0.4 to 1.9 g/L. 展开更多

As underground excavations are getting deeper and field stresses increase, the behavior of intact rock blocks plays an increasingly important role in understanding and estimating the overall rock mass strength. To model the brittle behavior of intact rock blocks, the stress–strain curve is usually idealized considering a linear strength mobilization approach(cohesion-weakening-friction-strengthening, CWFS),however, it is well recognized that rock presents a nonlinear behavior in terms of the confining stress. This study extends the strength mobilization in brittle failure of rock using nonlinear criteria. To determine the model parameters, a standard statistical method that uses the complete laboratory stress–strain curves of the intact rock is employed. Several hypotheses of linear and nonlinear models are statistically compared for different types of rock and confining stress levels. Results demonstrate that the best approach to model the brittle failure of rock is to consider a nonlinear strength envelope, such as the Hoek-Brown criterion assuming a residual uniaxial compressive strength different from zero and a mi parameter that increases, both with simultaneous mobilization. This model helps to recreate highconfining conditions and a more realistic transition between peak and post-peak strength. The obtained parameters are discussed and compared with literature values to verify the validity and to develop guidelines for the estimation of parameters, providing an objective mobilization criterion. Finally, the nonlinear model was applied to a finite element code and extended to a tunnel scale in the brittle rock under high-stress conditions. A reasonable fit between the simulations and the in-situ overbreak measurements was found. 展开更多

Design of a robust production facility layout with minimum handling cost (MHC) presents an appropriate approach to tackle facility layout problems in a dynamic volatile environment, in which product demands randomly change in each planning period. The objective of the design is to find the robust facility layout with minimum total material handling cost over the entire multiperiod planning horizon. This paper proposes a new mathematical model for designing robust machine layout in the stochastic dynamic environment of manufacturing systems using quadratic assignment problem (QAP) formulation. In this investigation, product demands are assumed to be normally distributed random variables with known expected value, variance, and covariance that randomly change from period to period. The proposed model was verified and validated using randomly generated numerical data and benchmark examples. The effect of dependent product demands and varying interest rate on the total cost function of the proposed model has also been investigated. Sensitivity analysis on the proposed model has been performed. Dynamic programming and simulated annealing optimization algorithms were used in solving the modeled example problems. 展开更多

Reinforced concrete(RC)structures are generally designed to carry quasi-static gravity loads through almost indispensable components namely slab, however,it may be subjected to high intense loads induced from the impact of projectiles generated by the tornado, falling construction equipment, and also from accidental explosions during their construction and service lifespan.Impacts due to rock/boulder falls do occur on the structures located especially in hilly areas.Such loadings are not predictable but may cause severe damage to the slab/structure.It stimulates structural engineers and researchers to investigate and understand the dynamic response of RC structures under such impulsive loading. This research work first investigates the performance of 1000×1000×75 mm^(3)conventionally reinforced two-way spanning normal strength concrete slab with only tension reinforcement(0.88%)under the concentric impact load(1035 N)using the finite element method based computer code,ABAQUS/Explicit-v.6.15.The impact load is delivered to the centroid of the slab using a solid-steel cylindroconical impactor(drop weight)with a flat nose of diameter 40 mm,having a total mass of 105 kg released from a fixed height of 2500 mm.Two popular concrete constitutive models in ABAQUS namely;Holmquist-Johnson-Cook(HJC)and Concrete Damage Plasticity(CDP),with strain rate effects as per fib MODEL CODE 2010,are used to model the concrete material behavior to impact loading and to simulate the damage to the slab. The slab response using these two models is analyzed and compared with the impact test results. The strain rate effect on the reinforcing steel bars has been incorporated in the analysis using the Malvar and Crawford(1998)approach.A classical elastoplastic kinematic idealization is considered to model the steel impactor and support system. Results reveal that the HJC model gives a little overestimation of peak displacement, maximum acceleration, and damage of the slab while the predictions given by the CDP model are in reasonable agreement with the experimental test results/observations available in the open literature.Following the validation of the numerical model, analyses have been extended to further investigate the damage response of the slab under eccentric impact loadings. In addition to the concentric location(P1)of the impacting device, five locations on a quarter of the slab i.e.,two along the diagonal(P2&P3),the other two along the mid-span(P4&P5),and the last one(P6)between P3 and P5,covering the entire slab, are considered.Computational results have been discussed and compared, and the evaluation of the most damaging location(s)of the impact is investigated. It has been found that the most critical location of the impact is not the centroid of the slab but the eccentric one with the eccentricity of 1/6th of the span from the centroid along the mid-span section. 展开更多

Carbon sequestration in unmineable coal seams has been proposed as one of the most attractive technologies to mitigate carbon dioxide(CO_(2))emissions in which CO_(2)is stored in the microporous structure of the coal matrix in an adsorbed state. The CO_(2)adsorption process is hence considered one of the more efective methodologies in environmental sciences. Thus, adsorption isotherm measurements and modelling are key important scientifc measures required in understanding the adsorption system, mechanism, and process optimization in coalbeds. In this paper, three renowned and reliable adsorption isotherm models were employed including Langmuir,Freundlich, and Temkin for pure CO_(2)adsorption data, and the extended-Langmuir model for multicomponent, such as fue gas mixture-adsorption data as investigated in this research work. Also, signifcant thermodynamics properties including the standard enthalpy change(ΔH°),entropy change(ΔS°),and Gibbs free energy(ΔG°)were assessed using the van’t Hof equation. The statistical evaluation of the goodness-of-ft was done using three(3)statistical data analysis methods including correlation coefcient(R^(2)),standard deviation(σ),and standard error(SE).The Langmuir isotherm model accurately represent the pure CO_(2)adsorption on the coals than Freundlich and Temkin. The extended Langmuir gives best experimental data ft for the fue gas.The thermodynamic evaluations revealed that CO_(2)adsorption on the South African coals is feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic;and the adsorption mechanism is a combined physical and chemical interaction between the adsorbate and the adsorbent. 展开更多

Single crystal silicon carbide(SiC)is widely used for optoelectronics applications.Due to the anisotropic characteristics of single crystal materials, the C face and Si face of single crystal SiC have different physical properties, which may fit for particular application purposes. This paper presents an investigation of the material removal and associated subsurface defects in a set of scratching tests on the C face and Si face of 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC materials using molecular dynamics simulations. The investigation reveals that the sample material deformation consists of plastic, amorphous transformations and dislocation slips that may be prone to brittle split. The results showed that the material removal at the C face is more effective with less amorphous deformation than that at the Si face.Such a phenomenon in scratching relates to the dislocations on the basal plane(0001)of the SiC crystal.Subsurface defects were reduced by applying scratching cut depths equal to integer multiples of a half molecular lattice thickness, which formed a foundation for selecting machining control parameters for the best surface quality. 展开更多

In this paper, two numerical methods are proposed for solving distributed-order fractional Bagley-Torvik equation. This equation is used in modeling the motion of a rigid plate immersed in a Newtonian fluid with respect to the nonnegative density function. Using the composite Boole's rule the distributedorder Bagley-Torvik equation is approximated by a multi-term time-fractional equation, which is then solved by the GrunwaldLetnikov method(GLM) and the fractional differential transform method(FDTM). Finally, we compared our results with the exact results of some cases and show the excellent agreement between the approximate result and the exact solution. 展开更多
