The incorporation of Bi into the catalysts lattice increased the surface area and lowered the overall V oxidation state. Profiles of temperature programmed reduction (TPR) in H2 show a significant shift of the maxima of major reduction peaks to lower temperatures for the Bi-promoted catalysts. A new peak was also observed at the low temperature region for the catalyst with 3% of Bi dopant. The addition of Bi also increased the total amount of oxygen removed from the catalysts. The reduction pattern and reactivity information provide fundamental insight into the catalytic properties of the catalysts. Bi-promoted catalysts were found to be highly active (71% and 81% conversion for 1% and 3% Bi promoted catalysts, respectively, at 703 K), as compared to the unpromoted material (47% conversion). The higher activity of the Bi-promoted catalysts is due to that these catalysts possess highly active and labile lattice oxygen. The better catalytic performance can also be attributed to the larger surface area.展开更多

This study aimed to establish an irrigation water quality index (IWQI) using a geostatistical model and multivariate indices in Gopalganj district, south-central Bangladesh. Groundwater samples were taken randomly (different depths) in two seasons (wet-monsoon and dry-monsoon). Hydrochemical analysis revealed groundwater in this area was neutral to slightly alkaline and dominating cations were Na^+, Mg^2+, and Ca^2+ along with major anions Cl^- and HCO3^-. Principal component analysis and Gibbs plot helped explain possible geochemical processes in the aquifer. The irrigation water evaluation indices showed: electrical conductivity (EC) 〉750 μS/cm, moderate to extreme saline; sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), excellent to doubtful; total hardness (TH), moderate to very hard; residual sodium bicarbonate, safe to marginal; Kelly's ratio 〉1; soluble sodium percentage (SSP), fair to poor; magnesium adsorption ratio, harmful for soil; and IWQI, moderate to suitable. In addition, the best fitted semivariogram for IWQI, EC, SAR, SSP, and TH confirmed that most parameters had strong spatial dependence and others had moderate to weak spatial dependence. This variation might be due to the different origin/sources of major contributing ions along with the influence of variable river flow and small anthropogenic contributions. Furthermore, the spatial distribution maps for IWQI, EC, SSP, and TH during both seasons confirmed the influence of salinity from the sea; low-flow in the major river system was the driving factor of overall groundwater quality in the study area. These findings may contribute to management of irrigation and/or drinking water in regions with similar groundwater problems.展开更多

The vegetation changed from bare ground (10 years after the eruptions) with little plant cover and poor soil to monotonic grassland dominated by Polygonum sachalinense with undeveloped soil (33 years) and then to deciduous broad-leaved forest dominated by Populus maximowiczii with diverse species composition and well-developed soil (100 years). At three chronosequential sites, we evaluated the compositions of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents and the isotope ratios of C (δ13C) and N (δ15N) in the litter of two dominant species, Polygonum sachalinense and Populus maximowiezii. The C/N ratio, δ13C and δ15N in the litter of these two species were higher in the forest than that in the bare ground and grassland. The PLFAs gradually increased from the bare ground to the forest, showing that microbial biomass increased with the development of the soil and/or vegetation. The fungi-to-bacteria ratio of PLFA was constant at 5.3 ± 1.4 in all three sites, suggesting that fungi were predominant. A canonical correspondence analysis suggested that the PLFA comoosition was related to the successional ages and the developing soil properties (P 〈 0.05, ANOSIM). The chrono- sequential analysis effectively detected the successional changes in both microbial and plant communities.展开更多

The catalysts produced by the above three methods were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and temperature programmed reduction (TPR). Catalytic evaluation for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA) was also carried out. The XRD patterns of all the Bi-doped catalysts showed the main peaks of pyrophosphate phase. Lower intensity peaks were observed for the mechanochemically treated Bi-doped catalyst (VPDBiMill) with two additional small peaks corresponding to the presence of a small amount of V5+ phase. The TPR profiles showed that the highest amount of active oxygen species, i.e, V4+–O- pair, responsible for n-butane activation, was removed from VPDBiMill. Furthermore, from the catalytic test results, the graph of selectivity to MA as a function of the conversion of n-butane demonstrated that VPDBiMill was the most selective catalyst. This suggests that the mechanochemical treatment of vanadium phosphate catalyst (VPDBiMill) is a potential method to improve the catalytic properties for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride.展开更多

To clarify maintenance mechanisms, we studied the forest profile, water level, groundwater and precipitation chemistry, seedling establishment patterns in relation to microhabitats, and seed migration. The profile of groundwater level insufficiently explained the abrupt boundary formation, while the groundwater chemistry differed significantly between the two forests ; i.e., EC, Na^+, K^+, Mg^2+, Ca^2+ and Cl^- were higher in P. glehnii forest and pH was lower. Precipitation in P. glehnii forest contained richer Na+, Ca^2+ and Cl^-, indicating that the differences in surface-water chemistry were mostly derived from precipitation. Solar radiation was less than 2.2 MJ.m^-2.d^-1 on P. glehnii forest in late June, while that was patchily distributed in A.japonica forest with a range from 1.0 to 3.7 MJ'm^-2'd^-1. Moss cover on the soil surface, most of which were made of Sphagnum spp., was 60% in P. glehnii forest, but was 10% in A. japonica forest. Surface water chemistry represented by pH was considered to determine the development of Sphagnum moss. About 70% of P. glehnii seedlings 〈 1.3 m in height established on moss cover. Seed-sowing experiments suggested that seed germination and seedling survival for both species were significantly higher in P. glehnii forest. Therefore, the regeneration of P. glehnii in A. japonica forest was negligible, owing to the paucity of favorable microhabitats and low seedling establishment. A. japonica regenerated only by resprouting, and the seedlings were few in both forests. In addition, A. japonica seed migration into the P. glehnii forests was greatly restricted, and low solar radiation in the P. glehnii forest contributed to low seedling survival. Based on those results, we concluded that Picea glehnii and Alnusjaponica could develop distinct and selfish environments being unsuitable for the other species and inhibit natural afforestation of another species each other by excluding invasion.展开更多

The melt rate of ice is determined by the amount of heat conducted through debris material lying over the ice. This study presents the vertical temperature gradients, thermal properties in terms of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, and positive degree-day factors for the debris-covered portion of Lirung Glacier in Langtang Valley, Nepal Himalaya using field-based measurements from three different seasons.Field measurements include debris temperatures at different debris thicknesses, air temperature, and ice melt during the monsoon(2013), winter(2013), and pre-monsoon(2014) seasons. We used a thermal equation to estimate thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity, and degree-day factors(DDF) were calculated from cumulative positive temperature and ice melt of the measurement period. Our analysis of debris temperature profiles at different depths of debris show the daily linear gradients of-20.81 °C/m, 4.05 °C/m, and-7.79 °C/m in the monsoon, winter, and pre-monsoon seasons, respectively. The values of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity in the monsoon season were 10 times greater than in the winter season. The large difference in these values is attributed to surface temperature and moisture content within the debris. Similarly, we found higher values of DDFs at thinner debris for the pre-monsoon season than in the monsoon season although we observed less melting during the pre-monsoon season. This is attributed to higher cumulative temperature during the monsoon season than in the pre-monsoon season. Our study advances our understanding of heat conductivity through debris material in different seasons, which supports estimating ice melt and discharge from glacierized river basins with debris-covered glaciers in the Himalayan region.展开更多

The anomaly was extremely large in the Pacific sector. The sea level height in the Bering Sea vs. the Greenland Sea has been analyzed and compared with the current meter data through the Bering Strait. A recent peak existed as a consequence of atmospheric circulation and is considered to contribute to inflow of the Pacific Water into the Arctic Basin. The timing of the Pacific Water inflow matched with the sea ice reduction in the Pacific sector and suggests a significant increase in heat flux. This component should be included in the model prediction for answering the question when the Arctic sea ice becomes a seasonal ice cover.展开更多

Many reports have revealed that histochemistry of DNA damage can be visualized using immunohistochemistry for the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase reaction in tissue sections. However, few reports have described quantification of DNA damage in tissues or cells. In this study, to estimate the degree of DNA damage, the confirmed method for histochemistry using biotinylated dUTP and deoxynucleotidyl transferase was applied to label the cleaved DNA ends caused by DNA damage in tissues or cells. After end-labeling, avidin-conjugated peroxidase was reacted. A significant correlation was observed between numbers of cleaved DNA ends and peroxidase activity after the reaction. The obtained signals for presented method showed higher than those for ordinary method, and correlate with degree of DNA damage caused by serum deprivation and chemical dose. In addition, DNA damage caused by apoptosis in cells treated with 6-hydroxydopamine or Cu and in the tissues of rats administered a diet containing no Zn could be evaluated quantitatively using the present method.展开更多

In general, in the developmental stages, the larger sex is more vulnerable to adverse environmental conditions because the larger sex requires more energy than the smaller sex. However, this may not hold true for birds with large brood sizes; the larger sex can acquire more food by suppressing the smaller sex. In addition, most previous studies have been experimental, such as by manipulating clutch size and ectoparasites, which may not reflect natural conditions. Methods: In the present study, we propose a general framework to assess sexual differences in environmental sensitivity in natural populations. Because environmental conditions change throughout the breeding season, seasonal changes of nestling SSD and sex ratio should reflect sexual differences in environmental sensitivity. We applied this approach to a large dataset(1555 nestlings over 5 years) of Japanese Tits(Parus minor). In this population, the male nestling is generally larger than the female(5% SSD in body weight). Results: We found that the magnitude of SSD(weight, tarsus, wing) and fledgling sex ratio increased both in the beginning and the end of the breeding season. Conclusion: Our study suggested that female nestlings are more valuable to poor environmental conditions in the relatively fecund species. This study underscores the importance of brood size on sexual differences in environmental stochasticity and our framework encourages comparative analysis among different bird species.展开更多

This study was conducted to investigate the influence of anionic surfactant, pH and electrolyte concentration on the dissolution of humic substances from a highly humic volcanic ash soil. The soil used in the experiment has a negative charge and the anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, has also the negative charge. The absorbance of supernatant of soil solution at different surfactant concentration and different electrolyte concentration (0.001 M, 0.01 M, 0.1 M & 0.5 M) of NaCl at pH 4.5 and 6.5 was measured at the wave-length of 400 nm;this corresponds to the relative concentration of dissolved humic substances. The surfactant adsorption and its equilibrium concentration under the same solution condition of the absorbance measurement were also measured in order to get their effect on dissolved humic substances. The zeta potential of soil particles was measured in order to evaluate the influence of electrostatic potential on dissolution of humic substances. The concentration of dissolved humic substances increased at higher surfactant concentration and adsorption, at higher pH and at lower electrolyte concentration, because the electrostatic repulsive force between the soil particles and the dissolving humic substances became larger. Therefore, surfactant concentration and adsorption, pH and electrolyte concentration are important when considering the fate of humic substances in soils.展开更多

Lakes larger than 0.1 ha were analyzed using Corona KH-4, KH-4A and KH-4B (1962-1968), Landsat ETM + (1999-2001), and ALOS/AVNIR-2 (2006-2007) satellite imagery. Between 1962 and 2007, the total number and area of lakes increased by +21% (347 to 420), and +7% (3680 ha to 3936 ha) in the continuous permafrost zone, respectively. These changes correspond to the appearance of 85 new lakes (166 ha) during the last 45 years. In contrast, lakes in the isolated permafrost zone have decreased by –42% (118 to 68) in number and –12% (422 ha to 371 ha) in area from 1962 to 2007. The changes in lake area and number are likely attributed to shifts in climate regimes and local permafrost conditions. Since 1962, the mean annual air temperature and potential evapotranspiration have increased significantly in the northern continuous permafrost zone compared to the southern isolated permafrost zone. Due to ongoing atmospheric warming without any significant trend in annual precipitation, patches of ice-rich subsurface have thawed, and the number and area of lakes have accordingly developed in the continuous permafrost zone. Shrinking of thermokarst lakes in the isolated permafrost zone may be due to disappearing permafrost, deepening of the active layer, and increased water loss through surface evaporation and subsurface drainage.展开更多

The important result of this study is estimate of the mean climatological sea surface height (SSH) that can be used as a reference for satellite altimetry sea level anomaly data in the Bering Sea region. Numerical experiments reveal that, when combined with satellite altimetry, the obtained reference SSH effectively constrains a realistic reconstruction of the Amukta Pass circulation.展开更多

文摘Bismuth-promoted (1% and 3%) vanadyl pyrophosphate catalysts were prepared by refluxing Bi(NO3)4.5H2O and VOPO4.2H2O in isobutanol. The better catalytic performance can also be attributed to the larger surface area.

文摘Southern Bangladesh's irrigation and drinking water is threatened by saline intrusion. These findings may contribute to management of irrigation and/or drinking water in regions with similar groundwater problems.
文摘Changes in the fungal and bacterial biomass and community structure in litter after the volcanic eruptions of Mount Usu, northern Japan were investigated using a chronosequence approach, which is widely used for analyzing vegetation succession. The chrono- sequential analysis effectively detected the successional changes in both microbial and plant communities.

文摘This study used Corona KH-4A and Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) PRISM images to generate digital terrain models (DTMs) of the distal part of Imja Glacier, where a few supraglacial ponds (~0.07 km 2) expanded into the large Imja Glacier Lake (Imja Tsho,~0.91 km 2) between 1964 and 2006.DTMs and subsequently derived topographical maps with contour intervals of 1 m were created from the high-resolution images (Corona in 1964 and ALOS in 2006) in the Leica Photogrammetric Suite (LPS) platform. The DTMs and topographic maps provided excellent representation of the elevation and micro-topography of the glacier surface, such as its supra-glacial ponds/lake,surface depressions, and moraine ridges, with an error of about +/-4 m (maximum). The DTMs produced from the Corona and ALOS PRISM images are suitable for use in studies of the surface change of glaciers. The topographical maps produced from the Corona data (1964) showed that part of the dead ice in the down-glacier area was even higher than the top of the lateral moraine ridges, while the glacier surface in the up-glacier area was noticeably lower than the moraine crests. This suggests more extensive melting of glacier ice in the up-glacier area before 1964.The average lowering of the glacier surface from 1964 to 2006 was 16.9 m for the dead-ice area west of the lake and 47.4 m for the glacier surface east of the lake;between 1964 and 2002,the lake surface lowered by 82.3 m.These figures represent average lowering rates of 0.4,1.1,and 2.2 m/year for the respective areas.
文摘In this study,NiO/SBA-15 was prepared by both direct and post synthesis methods.TEM images revealed that NiO particles aggregated in NiO/SBA-15 obtained with post synthesis method, regardless of NiO loading. However,NiO particles were monodispersed in NiO/SBA-15 with a NiO loading of less than 15 wt%by using the direct synthesis method. In this case,NiO particles aggregated when NiO loading was over 20 wt%.TPR analysis verified that with direct synthesis method the location boundary of NiO particles on outer and pore surface could be observed clearly, whereas that could not observed in the case of post synthesis method. This indicates that the type of synthesis method displays significant effect on the location of NiO particles dispersed into the SBA-15.Producer gas conversion was carried out using NiO/SBA-15 as catalysts, which were synthesized with different synthesis methods. The gas conversion including methanation occurred at low temperature(i.e.,300-400℃)and the reverse water gas shift(RWGS)reaction at hightemperature(i.e.,400-900℃).High temperatures facilitated CO conversion to CO with CO selectivity close to 100%,regardless of the synthesis method of the used catalyst. At low temperatures the dispersion type of NiO particles affectedthe CO,conversion reaction,i.e.,monodispersed Ni0 particles gave a CO selectivity of close to 100%,similar to thatobtained at high temperature. The aggregated NiO particles resuled in a CO selectivity of less than 100%owing to CH,formation, regardless of synthesis method of catalyst.Therefore,NiO/SBA-15 obtained with direct synthesis methodfavored RWGS reaction because of high CO selectivity.NiOSBA-15 obtained with post synthesis method is suited formethanation because of high CH selectivity, and the conversion of CO,to CHa through methanation increased withincreasing NiO loading.
文摘Three Bi-doped vanadyl pyrophosphate catalysts were prepared via dihydrate route (VPD method), which consisted of different preparation methods including mechanosynthesis, mechanochemical treatment, and the conventional reflux method. This suggests that the mechanochemical treatment of vanadium phosphate catalyst (VPDBiMill) is a potential method to improve the catalytic properties for the partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride.
文摘There is an abrupt boundary between two well-developed wetland forests, a stand consisting of a broad-leaved, nitrogen-fixer Alnusjaponica and a stand of the needle-leaved Picea glehnii Masters, in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Based on those results, we concluded that Picea glehnii and Alnusjaponica could develop distinct and selfish environments being unsuitable for the other species and inhibit natural afforestation of another species each other by excluding invasion.

文摘The extensive debris that covers glaciers in the ablation zone of the Himalayan region plays an important part in regulating ablation rates and water availability for the downstream region. Our study advances our understanding of heat conductivity through debris material in different seasons, which supports estimating ice melt and discharge from glacierized river basins with debris-covered glaciers in the Himalayan region.

文摘The sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean has been reducing and hit the low record in the summer of 2007. This component should be included in the model prediction for answering the question when the Arctic sea ice becomes a seasonal ice cover.
文摘An improved terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase- mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling method for the quantification of DNA damage in tissues and cultured cells was developed. In addition, DNA damage caused by apoptosis in cells treated with 6-hydroxydopamine or Cu and in the tissues of rats administered a diet containing no Zn could be evaluated quantitatively using the present method.

文摘The study focuses on the dynamics and biomass production (g·m-2) of understory (herbaceous) plant community under broad-leaf forests consisting of Quercus leucotrichophora (Banj-oak), Quercus floribunda (Tilonj-oak) and Quercus semicarpifolia (Kharsu-oak), respectively in central Himalaya, India. With increasing altitudes, the den-sity and biomass decreased significantly across the three types of forests. Banj-oak forest harboured the maximum density and biomass among the other sampling sites. The mean density of herb species in two contrasting orientation differed significantly (p0.05), showing relatively higher density on slope orientation (west). Across the sites, total production declined significantly with increasing altitude of the sites (p0.05), and Banj-oak forest presented the highest production.
文摘Background: Sexual size dimorphism(SSD) occurs in a wide range of species in birds and other animals, but the magnitude of SSD often varies with environmental conditions. This study underscores the importance of brood size on sexual differences in environmental stochasticity and our framework encourages comparative analysis among different bird species.
文摘Dissolved humic substances separated from soils play an important role in the material cycle because they adsorb nutrients and contaminants and move with water. Therefore, surfactant concentration and adsorption, pH and electrolyte concentration are important when considering the fate of humic substances in soils.
文摘This study presents thermokarst lake changes at seven different sites in the continuous and isolated permafrost zones in Mongolia. Shrinking of thermokarst lakes in the isolated permafrost zone may be due to disappearing permafrost, deepening of the active layer, and increased water loss through surface evaporation and subsurface drainage.

文摘The Bering Sea circulation is derived as a variational inverse of hydrographic profiles( temperature and salinity) , atmospheric climatologies and historical observation of ocean curents. The important result of this study is estimate of the mean climatological sea surface height (SSH) that can be used as a reference for satellite altimetry sea level anomaly data in the Bering Sea region. Numerical experiments reveal that, when combined with satellite altimetry, the obtained reference SSH effectively constrains a realistic reconstruction of the Amukta Pass circulation.
