The Use and Restoration of Papers for Archival Preservation-Case Study of National Taiwan Library

Background. There is significant progress in preservation and restoration of archives in various countries worldwide. And associated management technology specifications had been established. Archives Act of Taiwan （R.O.C.） was issued on 25th Dec. 1999. It was a very important event for preservation and restoration of archives. The word “Preservation” denotes activity with respect to collection of library, archives, and museum. Workers of cultural relic preservation and restoration must realize the threat regarding the damage and deterioration of data from which library and archives are suffering.

Can We Manage Coastal Area? Will We?——The Institutional Change of the Coastal Area Management of Taiwan

The Coastal Zone Management Act was finally promulgated in 2015,while Ministry of the Interior was asked to draft a coastal management act in 1991 by Executive Yuan.It was until the government’s lifting of martial law in 1987,vigorous activities started prevailing on coastal areas.And relevant legal documents were on sea reclamation for development in the 1980’s by Council of Agriculture.The approval of“Taiwan Coastal Area Natural Environment Protection Plan”showed an era of environmental protection in 1980s.However,it was surely not market driven,similar to land development,but some efforts by the administration systems.Through all the years,the efforts were put on drafting plans and these efforts were not quite sounding.The coastal disasters and further climate change caught the attention of relevant NGOs,scholars,politicians,and the society.At the critical juncture the government was made to react to outside demands.And then the Coastal Zone Management Act was passed by Legislative Yuan,establishing an integrated coastal management system in Taiwan.As such,it is proposed to look into this long process of the attempt with the concept of institutional change in order to understand this coastal environmental preservation and protection issue in a broader scope.

CYP2C19 polymorphism has no influence on rabeprazole-based hybrid therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication

AIM To evaluate the impact of cytochrome P450 2C19(CYP2C19) and interleukin-1β(IL-1β) polymorphisms on the efficacy of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) eradication by using rabeprazole-based hybrid therapy.METHODS A total of 88 H. pylori-infected patients were recruited to receive 14-d of hybrid therapy from March 2013 to May 2014. Three patients were excluded from analysis because of incomplete compliance. Either a follow-up endoscopy or 13 C-urea test was performed to determine the results of H. pylori eradication therapy. The genotypes of CYP2C19 and IL-1β were analyzed to investigate the impact on treatment effect. RESULTS The total eradication rate of H. pylori was 92.94%(79/85). According to the CYP2C19 genotypes, the rates of H. pylori eradication were 89.19% in extensive metabolizers(EM) and 95.83% in non-EM. The H.pylori eradication rates regarding the IL-1β genotypes were 92.59% in the normal acid secretion group and 93.10% in the low acid secretion group. After multivariable logistic regression analysis, both the genotypes of CYP2C19 and IL-1β had no significant influences on the eradication rates of H. pylori.CONCLUSION The CYP2C19 and IL-1β polymorphisms are not significantly independent factors of H.pylori eradication using rabeprazole-based hybrid therapy.

Pathophysiological significance of gallbladder volume changes in gallstone diseases

AIM: To study the pathophysiological significance of gallbladder volume (GBV) and ejection fraction changes in gallstone patients.METHODS: The fasting GBV of gallstone patients with acute cholecystitis (n = 99), chronic cholecystitis (n = 85) and non-gallstone disease (n = 240) were measured by preoperative computed tomography. Direct saline injection measurements of GBV after cholecystectomy were also performed. The fasting and postprandial GBV of 65 patients with gallstones and chronic cholecystitis and 53 healthy subjects who received health examinations were measured by abdominal ultrasonography. Proper adjustments were made after the correction factors were calculated by comparing the preoperative and postoperative measurements. Pathological correlations between gallbladder changes in patients with acute calculous cholecystitis and the stages defined by the Tokyo International Consensus Meeting in 2007 were made. Unpaired Student's t tests were used. P < 0.05 was deemed statistically significant. RESULTS: The fasting GBV was larger in late stage than in early/second stage acute cholecystitis gallbladders (84.66 ± 26.32 cm 3 , n = 12, vs 53.19 ± 33.80 cm 3 , n = 87, P = 0.002). The fasting volume/ejection fraction of gallbladders in chronic cholecystitis were larger/lower than those of normal subjects (28.77 ± 15.00 cm 3 vs 6.77 ± 15.75 cm 3 , P < 0.0001)/(34.6% ± 10.6%, n = 65, vs 53.3% ± 24.9%, n = 53, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: GBV increases as acute cholecystitis progresses to gangrene and/or empyema. Gallstone formation is associated with poorer contractility and larger volume in gallbladders that contain stones.

Hybrid vs sequential therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Taiwan: a prospective randomized trial

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of sequential vs hybrid therapy in patients with Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection.METHODS: From March 2013 to May 2014,one hundred and seventy-five H. pylori infected patients who had not been treated for H. pylori before wererandomized to receive either sequential therapy(rabeprazole 20 mg and amoxicillin 1 g twice daily for 5 d,followed by rabeprazole 20 mg,clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for 5 d) or hybrid therapy(rabeprazole 20 mg and amoxicillin 1 g for 7 d,followed by rabeprazole 20 mg,amoxicillin 1 g,clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for 7 d). H. pylori status was confirmed by positive results of both rapid urease test and histology examination or a positive result of culture. Eradication efficacy was assessed by follow-up endoscopy with rapid urease test and histological examination 8 wk after the end of anti-H. pylori therapy,or 13C-urea breath test at least 4 wk after completion of treatment. The primary outcome was H. pylori eradication by intension-to-treat(ITT) and per-protocol(PP) analyses.RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-seven patients(83 patients in the sequential group and 84 patients in the hybrid group) completed the study. The compliance rates were 97.6% and 97.7% for the two groups,respectively. The eradication rate was 78.2% for the sequential group and 92% for the hybrid group by ITT analysis(P = 0.01). The eradication rate was 81.9% for the sequential group and 96.4% for the hybrid group by PP analysis(P = 0.01). Univariate analysis for the clinical and bacterial factors did not identify any risk factors associated with treatment failure. Severe adverse events were observed in 2.3% of patients in the sequential group and 2.4% of those in the hybrid group.CONCLUSION: Due to a grade A(> 95%) success rate for H. pylori eradication by PP analysis,similar compliance and adverse events,hybrid therapy seems to be an appropriate eradication regimen in Taiwan.

＂Some Things Must Be Left Unsaid!＂ On How Macherey Is Dialogically Engaged with Post-Marxism1

This paper aims to examine how Macherey is dialogically engaged with post-Marxism in formulating his reading strategy. First Macherey thinks that the author must have left something unsaid in his text. The unsaid or the narrative rupture is responsible for the multiplicity of the voices in the text, enabling the text to exist. Most of all, Macherey argues that a text, embedded in History, is where the author represents ideology inaccurately. And it is from this inaccuracy where the narrative rupture emerges. At this point, Macherey is dialogically correlated with several major post-Marxists, such as Althusser, Eagleton, and Jameson. First, all three of them give their own definitions to ideology, and they all define the relationship between the text, ideology, and History in a similar fashion. For Althusser, ideology is men＇s imaginary relation to History and is insufficiently reflected in the text, which perfectly corresponds to Macherey＇s claim. For Eagleton, a text absorbs ideology and puts it into contradiction, establishing its relationship with History. As Eagleton himself has stated, his so-called ＂ideological contradiction＂ is tantamount to Macherey＇s so-called ＂narrative rupture.＂ In Jameson＇s opinion, ideology is designed to repress social contradictions, and a text, a symbolic act, is supposed to offer imaginary solutions to them. Above all, they end up as the latent meanings of a text. As for History, it is the inaccessible Real. In speaking of ＂the latent meanings of a text,＂ Jameson literally echoes Machery＇s said/unsaid model. Thus, we can confirm how Macherey is dialogically engaged with post-Marxism.

In this article, we study the following initial value problem for the nonlinear equation {u″u（t）=c1＋c2u′（t）^2, c1≥0, c2≥0, u（0）=u0, u′（0）=u1. We are interested in properties of solutions of the above problem. We find the life-span, blow-up rate, blow-up constant and the regularity, null point, critical point, and asymptotic behavior at infinity of the solutions.

Learning Association Rules and Tracking the Changing Concepts on Webpages:An Effective Pornographic Websites Filtering Approach

We applied the decision tree algorithm to learn association rules between webpage’s category(pornographic or normal) and the critical features.Based on these rules, we proposed an efficient method of filtering pornographic webpages with the following major advantages: 1) a weighted window-based technique was proposed to estimate for the condition of concept drift for the keywords found recently in pornographic webpages; 2) checking only contexts of webpages without scanning pictures; 3) an incremental learning mechanism was designed to incrementally update the pornographic keyword database.

An Exploratory Study on the Meaning of Using Community Psychiatric Rehabilitation among Persons with Psychiatric Disabilities

This study explores the meaning of the use of community psychiatric rehabilitation(CPR)services to gain knowledge to improve services and shed more light on how to facilitate recovery.The topics explored included:the motivation for participation,perception and expectation towards CPR,the interactions with professionals in the CPR Center,and the feelings towards activities.A qualitative approach was adopted,and 30 consumers were interviewed face-to-face by using semi-structured interview guide.Data were analyzed using the open coding method of grounded theory.The consumer accounts provided information on the eight aspects of CPR services.The findings revealed that the CPR Center created a lifeworld,a friendly place similar to home with structure and activities.Professional relationship was the key change agent for rehabilitation.Most professionals adopted recovery-oriented approach to empower participants by giving opportunities and choices.The essential ingredients of this lifeworld covered rehabilitation goals,physical exercises,psychological impact,social interactions,learning,and economic gains.The services were venues for interpersonal interactions and provided structure for daily life,which helped consumers reach their rehabilitation goals and brought existential meaning to their lives.Yet,the accounts also revealed negative phenomena in the CPR center.Suggestions were made to improve services.

Upside and downside correlated jump risk premia of currency options and expected returns

This research explores upside and downside jumps in the dynamic processes of three rates:domestic interest rates,foreign interest rates,and exchange rates.To fill the gap between the asymmetric jump in the currency market and the current models,a correlated asymmetric jump model is proposed to capture the co-movement of the correlated jump risks for the three rates and identify the correlated jump risk premia.The likelihood ratio test results show that the new model performs best in 1-,3-,6-,and 12-month maturities.The in-and out-of-sample test results indicate that the new model can capture more risk factors with relatively small pricing errors.Finally,the risk factors captured by the new model can explain the exchange rate fluctuations for various economic events.

South China Sea-A Conflict-Prone Place?

A military escalation between China and the United States in the South China Sea(SCS)is staged which resembles the Cold War crisis in Europe in the 1950’s and 1960’s.The PRC has reclaimed and fortified its holdings in the SCS since 2013;in 2017,the US has declared an“Indo-Pacific Strategy”to contain China.Due to differences of interest of the relevant countries,it will be difficult to create an effective united front against China in the near future.It remains to be seen whether armed conflict between China and the US be avoided.

Collective Action as a New Approach to Rural Rejuvenation:Exploring Mobilization of Indigenous Community in Eastern Taiwan

The“Rural Rejuvenation Act”was legislated on 4th August,2010 by the government,which was designed to revitalize the overall development of rural areas in Taiwan.As rural decline fell into a vicious circle,problems such as rural migration,aging,lower education,lower average labor productivity,and overall low levels of public service,the government would like to actively solve the so-called“declining industry”.It is enacted to establish a rural rejuvenation fund and hope to take care of the farmers and fishermen in rural areas.The aim of this fund is to make the rural community filling with“vitality,health,and happiness”.To implement rural rejuvenation policy,besides top-down integrating strategies,the bottom-up promoting strategies are also considered as an important method.The Amis indigenous community in Eastern Taiwan was encouraged to apply Empowerment Program.According to the rejuvenation course rule,once organizations which make their farmers or residents finish four stages of course(including beginner’s course,advanced course,core course,and rejuvenation course)are qualified to propose a Rural Rejuvenation Plan.The indigenous community was very happy about the four-year project which was approved by the government.However,whether the mobilization of whole community to execute Rural Rejuvenation Plan and achieve their rejuvenated goal of community development is needed to be investigated deliberatively.We propose an analytical framework to understand the role of collective action based on the interaction of two dimensions:group characteristics of the indigenous community and external environment which is depended on external support by government and non-government organizations.The implementation of the project depends on financial and non-financial support,such as subsidy to verification fees of organic farming or training and empowering farmers with specific knowledge.This study finds that:(1)The community did retain Amis culture;the leaders have been directly involved in strengthening operational capacity;(2)Leaders’efforts of mobilizing the whole community to implement the project collectively resulted in rational ignorance of the villagers and even resource centralization;(3)The central and local government were lack of coordination;the inequality of resource allocation may hinder the indigenous community development.Our findings reveal that collective action is not a panacea to mobilize the villagers to attend community-oriented project.

The Dynamic Relationship of Brain Networks Across Time Windows During Product-Based Creative Thinking

Consensus of creativity research suggests that the measurement of both originality and valuableness is necessary when designing creativity tasks.However,few studies have emphasized valuableness when exploring underlying neural substrates of creative thinking.The present study employs product-based creativity tasks that measure both originality and valuableness in an exploration of the dynamic relationship between the default mode(DMN),executive control(ECN),and salience(SN)networks through time windows.This methodology highlights relevance,or valuableness,in creativity evaluation as opposed to divergent thinking tasks solely measuring originality.The researchers identified seven brain regions belonging to the ECN,DMN,and SN as regions of interest(ROIs),as well as four representative seeds to analyze functional connectivity in 25 college student participants.Results showed that all of the identified ROIs were involved during the creative task.The insula,precuneus,and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex(vlPFC)remained active across all stages of product-based creative thinking.Moreover,the connectivity analyses revealed varied interaction patterns of DMN,ECN,and SN at different thinking stages.The integrated findings of the whole brain,ROI,and connectivity analyses suggest a trend that the DMN and SN(which relate to bottom-up thinking)attenuate as time proceeds,whereas the vlPFC(which relates to top-down thinking)gets stronger at later stages;these findings reflect the nature of our creativity tasks and decision-making of valuableness in later stages.Based on brain region activation throughout execution of the task,we propose that product-based creative process may include three stages:exploration and association,incubation and insight,and finally,evaluation and decision making.This model provides a thinking frame for further research and classroom instruction.

＂From a Utopia to a Dystopia＂ On Mark Twain＇s Compliance with and Deviation from Heterotopology in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur＇s Court

In this paper, the author intends to parallelize Mark Twain＇s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur＇s Court with Foucault＇s theorizations about heterotopia, or heterotopology. For Foucault, heterotopia is a paradox because it is paces that are both real and placeless. Twain＇s novel is a time travel story, which juxtaposes the temporalities of the 6th and 19th centuries. In the story, Hank, the hero, is allowed access to Camelot, King Arthur＇s court. Above all, he has introduced to it quite a few elements of modem technology and civilization. So far Twain seems to have complied with Foucault＇s heterotopology. That is, there is a textual heterotopia created in his novel. However, the last principle of Foucault＇s heterotopology states that a heterotopia can be comparable to a utopia because of its contrastive function. A typical time travel story has the same contrastive function as well. That is, in either case there should be a utopia, a dystopia, or a mixture of them. However, Twain＇s novel fails to contrast the 6th century with the 19th century simply because the heterotopia Hank has created leaps from a utopia to a dystopia. It is at this point where Twain has deviated from heterotopology. The shifting nature of this heterotopia not only disables its contrastive mechanism but also jeopardizes its thematic clarity. Most of all, it indicates that Twain has a considerably ambivalent attitude towards the industrial civilization, and that as a consequence, he is indecisive about the direction of this novel.

Applying Gamification for Digital Transformation to a Platform-Based Business

The study conducts a single case study and inductive approach to explore how a famous hairdressing chain in Taiwan transforms its business to a platform-centric enterprise in the digital era. In order to deal with its employee resistance to digital transformation resulting from path dependence and increase its employee’s engagement in driving digital transformation, gamification is deployed. As a result, the company has reshaped five domains of its business strategy—customer, competition, data, innovation, and value to build a platform. The platform is the key enabler in facilitating interactions among hairdressers and customers. The co-created hairstyle designs will be the resource of this two-sided market formed by hairdressers and customers in this sharing economy.
