Research Data Management(RDM)has become increasingly important for more and more academic institutions.Using the Peking University Open Research Data Repository(PKU-ORDR)project as an example, this paper will review a library-based university-wide open research data repository project and related RDM services implementation process including project kickoff, needs assessment, partnerships establishment, software investigation and selection, software customization,as well as data curation services and training.Through the review, some issues revealed during the stages of the implementation process are also discussed and addressed in the paper such as awareness of research data, demands from data providers and users, data policies and requirements from home institution, requirements from funding agencies and publishers, the collaboration between administrative units and libraries, and concerns from data providers and users. The significance of the study is that the paper shows an example of creating an Open Data repository and RDM services for other Chinese academic libraries planning to implement their RDM services for their home institutions. The authors of the paper have also observed since the PKU-ORDR and RDM services implemented in 2015,the Peking University Library(PKUL)has helped numerous researchers to support the entire research life cycle and enhanced Open Science(OS)practices on campus,as well as impacted the national OS movement in China through various national events and activities hosted by the PKUL. 展开更多

Its mission is to improve the resource sharing for China's higher education. The framework of CADLIS is constructed to allow easy interconnection and interoperability. This paper presents an introduction to the portal, academic resources, bibliographic system, service network, digital library technical platform, standards and criteria of CADLIS as well. 展开更多

Purpose: China Academic Library & Information System(CALIS) planned to launch an institutional repository(IR) project to promote IR development and open access at colleges and universities in China. In order to get to know the current state of IRs in academic institutions, with the help of Peking University Library, CALIS Administrative Center conducted this survey.Design/methodology/approach: We conducted an online survey of CALIS member libraries.Findings: Firstly, the development of IRs at China's colleges and universities is still in its infancy. Secondly, the Chinese colleges and universities have reached a consensus on the objective for having an IR. Thirdly, they are having high expectations of IR functions. Fourthly, they prefer to establish a centralized IR system at a minimum cost. Finally, there are both similarities and differences between the Chinese academic institutions and their counterparts in other countries in the state of IR development.Research limitations: The questionnaire needs to be improved because there is a lack of enough questions for those who do not plan to build an IR. Comparatively lower rate of valid questionnaire return can affect the accuracy of the results. It is hard to go into an in-depth discussion only based on the data collected from this questionnaire survey, and consequently, the findings from the survey can hardly present an accurate and comprehensive picture of the current state of IR development in the academic sector in China.Practical implications: The survey results provide essential foundation for CALIS IR project, and meanwhile the research can serve as a reference source for the future studies of the development of IRs at China's colleges and universities.Originality/value: It is the first national survey focused on the development of IRs in academic institutions in China. 展开更多

Purpose: This study introduces an algorithm to construct tag trees that can be used as a userfriendly navigation tool for knowledge sharing and retrieval by solving two issues of previous studies, i.e. semantic drift and structural skew.Design/methodology/approach: Inspired by the generality based methods, this study builds tag trees from a co-occurrence tag network and uses the h-degree as a node generality metric. The proposed algorithm is characterized by the following four features:(1) the ancestors should be more representative than the descendants,(2) the semantic meaning along the ancestor-descendant paths needs to be coherent,(3) the children of one parent are collectively exhaustive and mutually exclusive in describing their parent, and(4) tags are roughly evenly distributed to their upper-level parents to avoid structural skew. Findings: The proposed algorithm has been compared with a well-established solution Heymann Tag Tree(HTT). The experimental results using a social tag dataset showed that the proposed algorithm with its default condition outperformed HTT in precision based on Open Directory Project(ODP) classification. It has been verified that h-degree can be applied as a better node generality metric compared with degree centrality.Research limitations: A thorough investigation into the evaluation methodology is needed, including user studies and a set of metrics for evaluating semantic coherence and navigation performance.Practical implications: The algorithm will benefit the use of digital resources by generating a flexible domain knowledge structure that is easy to navigate. It could be used to manage multiple resource collections even without social annotations since tags can be keywords created by authors or experts, as well as automatically extracted from text.Originality/value: Few previous studies paid attention to the issue of whether the tagging systems are easy to navigate for users. The contributions of this study are twofold:(1) an algorithm was developed to construct tag trees with consideration given to both semanticcoherence and structural balance and(2) the effectiveness of a node generality metric, h-degree, was investigated in a tag co-occurrence network. 展开更多

Reading program is an important way to cultivate children’s reading habits and interest. This study aims at exploring how to assess the effectiveness and impact of children’s reading programs held by public libraries. On the basis of related research, through applying the Delphi method and the analytic hierarchy process, this study constructs a multi-dimensional evaluation system for children’s reading programs from the perspectives of library, users and society. This system is characterized by covering criteria on input and output, outcomes and impact.Indicators on library input and the benefits for participants are considered more important. 展开更多
