Prediction on the coupled thermal-hydraulic fields of embankment and cutting slopes is essential to the assessment on evolution of melting zone and natural permafrost table, which is usually a key factor for permafrost embankment design in frozen ground regions. The prediction may be further complicated due to the inherent uncertainties of material properties. Hence, stochastic analyses should be conducted. Firstly, Karhunen-Loeve expansion is applied to attain the random fields for hydraulic and thermal conductions. Next, the mixed-form modified Richards equation for mass transfer (i.e., mass equation) and the heat transport equation for heat transient flow in a variably saturated frozen soil are combined into one equation with temperature unknown. Furthermore, the finite element formulation for the coupled thermal-hydraulic fields is derived. Based on the random fields, the stochastic finite element analyses on stability of embankment are carried out. Numerical results show that stochastic analyses of embankment stability may provide a more rational picture for the distribution of factors of safety (FOS), which is definitely useful for embankment design in frozen ground regions. 展开更多

For the purpose of enhancing air convection and controlling solar radiation, a new crushed-rock slope embankment design combined with a sun-shade measure is proposed. A newly designed embankment was constructed in the Tuotuohe section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and a field-testing experiment was carried out to determine its convection and temperature characteristics. The results show that distinct air convection occurred in the crushed-rock layer of the new embankment, especially in cold seasons, which was enhanced when it flowed upwards along the slope. This preliminarily indicated that the new design of the embankment slope was good for reinforcing air convection in the crushed-rock layer. The frequent fluctuations of the convection speed and the environmental wind speed were in good agreement, suggesting that the convection in the crushed rock primarily came from the ambient wind. It was also preliminarily determined that the new embankment had a better cooling effect and sun-shade effect for decreasing the temperature of the embankment slope compared with a traditional crushed-rock slope embankment, and the mean temperature difference between them was up to 1.7 °C. The mean annual temperature at the bottom boundary of the crushed-rock layer was obviously lower than that at the top boundary, and heat flux calculation showed that the shallow soil beneath the embankment slope was weakly releasing heat, all of which indicated that the new embankment slope design was beneficial to the thermal stability of the embankment. This study is helpful in providing some references for improved engineering design and maintenance of roadbeds in permafrost regions. 展开更多

In the numerical simulation of long-term subgrade temperature fields, the daily variation of soil temperature at a certain depth h is negligible. Such phenomenon is called the "boundary layer theory." Depth h is defined as the boundary layer thickness and the soil temperature at h is approximately equal to a temperature increment plus the average atmosphere temperature. In the past, the boundary layer thickness and temperature increment were usually extracted from monitored data in the field. In this paper, a method is proposed to determinate the boundary layer thickness and temperature incre- ment. Based on the typical designs of highway or railway, the theoretical solution of boundary layer thickness is inferred and listed. Further, the empirical equation and design chart for determining the temperature increment are given in which the following factors are addressed, including solar radiation, equivalent thermal diffusivity and convective heat-transfer coefficient. Using these equations or design charts, the boundary layer thickness and temperature increment can be easily determined and used in the simulation of long-term subgrade temperature fields. Finally, an example is conducted and used to verify the method. The result shows that the proposed method for determining the upper thermal boundary of subgrade is accurate and practical. 展开更多

Frost heave is one of the major complications in highway construction in cold regions. Laboratory experiments are im- portant in the study frost heave behavior of soils, and one-dimensional frost heave experiments are the easiest way to evaluate the soil frost heave potential. In a one dimensional frost heave test, the deformation in axial direction is non-uniform because of the confining effect of the cutting ring's sidewall. If the effect of confining boundary on soil de- formation is ignored, the deformation will be over-estimated. In this paper, the effect of confining boundary on soil de- formation is theoretically studied and a volume correction method is developed and applied to the frost heave test of a sulfite saline soil. Test results demonstrate that the sulfite saline soil will expand to a loose, low-density state after several freezing-thawing cycles under the condition of zero axial stress. 展开更多

Located in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, the Gonghe-Yushu high-grade highway was the first of its kind in plateau permafrost regions. Most of the road sections along the high-grade highway are unstable or extremely unstable warm permafrost with an average annual ground temperature above −1℃,which is vulnerable to global warming and human engineering activities. This paper describes permafrost characteristics, roadbed design, and operation of the Gonghe-Yushu high-grade highway in detail. It is found that thaw settlement of warm and ice-rich permafrost is the main cause of subgrade subsidence in permafrost sections of this highway due to insufficient permafrost survey and drainage design. It is recommended that the interception and drainage system's design be optimized, and the permafrost upper limit and the variation of ground temperature be further investigated to provide essential data for the treatment of highway distress. It should be emphasized that protecting permafrost soil environment and optimized engineering design are crucial to successful high-grade highway engineering in permafrost regions. 展开更多

Soil water content measurement is critical in practical engineering. The actively heated fiber Bragg grating optic sensor(FBGS)has great potential of multi-point measurement for soil water content measurement in field. In this study, the effect of heating time on the measurement accuracy is discussed, and modifications are made for actively heated fiber optic(AHFO)sensors. The results demonstrate that if an integration data analysis method is used, the accuracy and reliability of soil water content measurement with AHFO sensors will be improved. Both a short fiber length and a short-term heating pattern are effective and can help to reduce soil disturbance. With the proposed integration method,a short heating time is guaranteed for measuring the soil water content.Such improvements will reduce the thermal disturbance to soil sample and improve the reliability of measurement. 展开更多
