The Character Construction of American TV Series and Its Enlightenment to Domestic TV——Taking the“Better Call Saul”as an Example

“Better Call Saul”is an excellent American television series.As a spin-off of“Breaking Bad”,it continues its excellent character design and intriguing plot development,giving audiences around the world a treat to talk about.However,while“Breaking Bad”has a huge audience and the film and television industry has done a lot of research on it,“Better Call Saul”has not been studied in domestic academic circles.This paper takes several main characters of the play as the research object,analyzes how their characters are designed,and how they complement each other with the dramatic conflict of the plot,so as to explore a new angle of character design.Through the study of the characters in this American drama,this paper can provide a reference for the Chinese film and television industry.The results show that Chinese TV dramas can learn from this American drama to improve the depth of character design and avoid designing stereotyped and labeled characters.This may ultimately improve their artistic literacy and bring more excellent works to Chinese audiences.

Effect of Anion on Adsorption of Rare Earth Elements on Kaolinite

For a better understanding the adsorption of rare earth elements(REEs) on minerals and its controlling factors, adsorption experiments were performed with kaolin in a matrix of various concentration of anion (Cl-, ClO4-, SO42-) in the pH 6.5. The adsorption of REEs onto the kaolin increase with increasing anion concentration, especially in the presence of SO42-, which is ascribe to the Na+ mass effect and anion complexation. furthermore, the heavy REEs are more adsorbed onto kaolin in presence of higher concentration of anion, especially for Cl-and SO42-, presumably due to the difference of anion complexation with light REE and heavy REEs.

Secured Framework for Assessment of Chronic Kidney Disease in Diabetic Patients

With the emergence of cloud technologies,the services of healthcare systems have grown.Simultaneously,machine learning systems have become important tools for developing matured and decision-making computer applications.Both cloud computing and machine learning technologies have contributed significantly to the success of healthcare services.However,in some areas,these technologies are needed to provide and decide the next course of action for patients suffering from diabetic kidney disease(DKD)while ensuring privacy preservation of the medical data.To address the cloud data privacy problem,we proposed a DKD prediction module in a framework using cloud computing services and a data control scheme.This framework can provide improved and early treatment before end-stage renal failure.For prediction purposes,we implemented the following machine learning algorithms:support vector machine(SVM),random forest(RF),decision tree(DT),naïve Bayes(NB),deep learning(DL),and k nearest neighbor(KNN).These classification techniques combined with the cloud computing services significantly improved the decision making in the progress of DKD patients.We applied these classifiers to the UCI Machine Learning Repository for chronic kidney disease using various clinical features,which are categorized as single,combination of selected features,and all features.During single clinical feature experiments,machine learning classifiers SVM,RF,and KNN outperformed the remaining classification techniques,whereas in combined clinical feature experiments,the maximum accuracy was achieved for the combination of DL and RF.All the feature experiments presented increased accuracy and increased F-measure metrics from SVM,DL,and RF.

Risk Assessment of Oxalis corymbosa DC. Invasion in Kunming City

The study conducted a field survey of the invasive plant Oxalis corymbosa DC. in Kunming and an invasion risk assessment was carried out. The results showed that the invasion risk of Oxalis corymbosa DC. in four districts of Kunming was 1.9 in Wuhua District, 2.05 in Panlong District, 0.6 in Xishan District, 1.45 in Guandu District and 0.6 in downtown area, among which Panlong District had the highest invasion risk. Schools(1.9) > Parks(1.45) > Residential communities(0.6). In addition, it was found in the survey that the Oxalis latifolia as a quarantine weed had a sporadic distribution in Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, so it is necessary to pay attention to prevention and control to avoid the harm caused by escape and spread.

Sino-Thai Relations in the Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties

This paper takes Thailand recorded in Chinese ancient texts during the Yuan,Ming and Qing dynasties(12th-19th centuries A.D.)as the main source of research,especially the interactions between China and countries in the Thai region as recorded in these ancient texts,namely Yuanshi,Xin Yuanshi,Daoyi Zhilüe,Mingshilu,and Qingshi Gao.The relationship between China and Thailand is studied in three aspects:(1)tribute relations;(2)folk commerce;and(3)Chinese immigration.

Application of Common Poisonous Garden Plants in Kunming City

This study made a survey and an analysis by taking 46 kinds of common poisonous garden plants in Kunming City as research objects.The results showed that 79.84%of the poisonous plants in Kunming were not used frequently,and the application area was concealed,or there were warning signs and 20.16%of the common poisonous plants were used frequently,and there were potential safety hazards.There are following suggestions:Adjusting the application sites of some garden plants with high ornamental value but poisonous according to their toxicity and setting up warning signs to better embody their ornamental value while ensuring people’s safety.

Subways and the Diffusion of Knowledge:Evidence from China

This paper aims to examine the role of the subway network,a typical form of transportation within urban areas,on innovation and knowledge diffusion.Applying the differece-in-diferences strategy and spatial analysis,we used 1,332 newly opened stations in China from 2000 to 2013 as a quasi-experiment to identify the local effects of subway expansions.Results suggested that by reducing communication costs and increasing opportunities for interaction,subway construction would bring growth at the district level.Knowledge dissemination would become more active after new stations open.Micro-level results showed that these positive impacts were highly localized;that is,only those firms located within lkm around stations benefited from the new subway.Moreover,new subways facilitated the flow of knowledge from station to station and assisted.firms in acquiring knowledge from more distant technology clusters conveniently.

International Students Experience Foreign Language Anxiety: Case data from galvanic skin response

This experiment utilized video clips and electrodermal activity(GSR) to explore the subject's foreign language anxiety during mathematical operations in two different languages. A single case multiple baseline design was performed with a postgraduate who used English as a foreign language. Physiological measures indicated that international students experienced foreign language anxiety intensely even though they were familiar with the knowledge being tested. And the independent-samples test shows that there exist significant differences in the two types of working memory capacity tasks involving mathematical contents. Further research could focus on individual differences, including demographic variables(the number of subjects, gender) and psychological variables(anxiety traits), to figure out what kind of ways may really suitable for international students' learning.

How Tests Enhance Learning and Some Suggestions for English Teaching

Based on results of researches done on testing,this paper discusses how tests enhance learning and what should be con⁃sidered when tests are used as learning assistant.Some suggestions are brought up as to how to better use tests to enhance learning,and these suggestions can be applied to English learning and teaching.
