Participants in mixed-species bird flocks(MSFs)have been shown to associate with species that are similar in body size,diet,and evolutionary history,suggesting that facilitation structures these assemblages.In additio...Participants in mixed-species bird flocks(MSFs)have been shown to associate with species that are similar in body size,diet,and evolutionary history,suggesting that facilitation structures these assemblages.In addition,several studies have suggested that species in MsFs resemble each other in their plumage,but this question has not been systematically investigated for any MsF system.During the nonbreeding season of 2020 and 2021,we sampled 585 MSFs on 14 transects in 2 habitats of Tongbiguang Nature Reserve in western Yunnan Province,China.We performed social network analysis and the Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure to evaluate the effect of 4 species traits(body size,overall plumage color,distinctive plumage patterns,and diet)and evolutionary history on species association strength at the whole-MSF and within-MSF levels.All 41 significant relationships showed that species with stronger associations were more similar in their various traits.Body size had the strongest effect on association strength,followed by phylogeny,plumage patterns,and plumage color;diet had the weakest effect.Our results are consistent with the hypotheses that the benefits of associating with phenotypically similar species outweigh the potential costs of interspecific competition,and that trait matching can occur in plumage characteristics,albeit more weakly than in other traits.Several explanations exist as to why similarities in plumage may occur in MSFs,including that they could reduce predators'ability to target phenotypically"odd"individuals.Whether trait matching in plumage occurs through assortative processes in ecological time or is influenced by co-evolution requires furtherstudy.展开更多
In the last two decades,developments in the area of biomineralization has yielded promising results making it a potentially environmentally friendly technique for a wide range of applications in engineering and wastew...In the last two decades,developments in the area of biomineralization has yielded promising results making it a potentially environmentally friendly technique for a wide range of applications in engineering and wastewater/heavy metal remediation.Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation(MICP)has led to numerous patented applications ranging from novel strains and nutrient sources for the precipitation of biominerals.Studies are being constantly published to optimize the process to become a promising,cost effective,ecofriendly approach when compared with the existing traditional remediation technologies which are implemented to solve multiple contamination/pollution issues.Heavy metal pollution still poses a major threat towards compromising the ecosystem.The removal of heavy metals is of high importance due to their recalcitrance and persistence in the environment.In that perspective,this paper reviews the current and most significant discoveries and applications of MICP towards the conversion of heavy metals into heavy metal carbonates and removal of calcium from contaminated media such as polluted water.It is evident from the literature survey that although heavy metal carbonate research is very effective in removal,is still in its early stages but could serve as a solution if the microorganisms are stimulated directly in the heavy metal environment.展开更多
Background:China has ambitious to achieve significant reductions in HIV transmission and HIV-related mortality by adopting the World Health Organization's“Treat All”approach.Such a prevention strategy is needed ...Background:China has ambitious to achieve significant reductions in HIV transmission and HIV-related mortality by adopting the World Health Organization's“Treat All”approach.Such a prevention strategy is needed future study on regional scale.Methods:An observational cohort study of HIV epidemiology and treatment databases was used to study the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy on the transmission of HIV in serodiscordant couples in Guangxi of China.Results:A total of 7713 couples were entered into the cohort study analysis which included 1885 couples in the treatment-naive cohort and 5828 couples in the treated cohort.During the follow-up of 18985.29 person-years from 2003 to 2014,the average incidence of HIV was 2.4 per 100 person-years(95%CI 2.1e2.6).HIV seroincidence rate was significantly higher among the treatment naive group(4.2 per 100 person-years,3.7e4.8)compared with the on treatment group(1.6 per 100 person-years,1.3e1.8).An overall 45%reduction in risk of HIV transmission among serodiscordant couple was associated with ART treatment(adjusted Hazard Ratio[HR]0.55,95%Confidence Interval[CI]0.44e0.69).Treatment prevention had significantly effectiveness for most baseline characteristics of index partners,such as for male,female,age above 25 years,education below high school,farmer,infected by heterosexual intercourse.Conclusion:Treatment-as-prevention can be implemented in the real-world on a national or regional scale,but ART adherence and comprehensive harm reduction while implementing this strategy require further study.展开更多
Since the turn of the century,creative industries have displayed considerable power in transforming the social and economic landscapes of most global metropolises,including such Chinese mega-cities as Beijing and Shan...Since the turn of the century,creative industries have displayed considerable power in transforming the social and economic landscapes of most global metropolises,including such Chinese mega-cities as Beijing and Shanghai.However,the story of creative industries does not end there.Recent studies have focused on the role of creative sector in the countryside.It has been argued that the creative sector can effectively contribute to diversifying socio-economic development in rural areas by increasing employment,enhancing the quality of life,and promoting social inclusion and community development.With the aim to chart new paths for China’s rural revitalisation and address the country’s‘three rural issues’(i.e.agriculture,rural areas and farmers),this paper examines the potentials and challenges to developing the creative sector in rural China.It first reviews the academic debate about expanding the development of creative industries from urban to rural areas.Drawing on the research and classification of creative industries in rural Western Ireland,this study identifies industries characterised by‘content creation and production’and‘creative design services’,which would have potential in rural China.The major impediments to and crucial factors for developing rural creative industries in China are investigated and appraised within the framework of‘creative people,creative place,and creative support’.After analysing emerging practices in Jiangsu Province,this paper highlights the potential of abandoned industrial complexes in rural parts of China’s coastal regions,which can act as incubators for creative industries.Those former manufacturing plants are the remains of township-village enterprises(TVEs),which constituted part of China’s flagship policy for rural regeneration in the 1980s.Not only do they have special architectural attributes favourable for creative production,but also represent the socio-economic entity of the village collective and are the carriers of cultural meanings and memories.This paper concludes with a set of recommendations for both public and private sectors.It calls for a more proactive stance from governments to promote the creative sector in rural areas and revitalise rural economies and communities through the reuse or regeneration of former TVEs.展开更多
Semiotics has shed much light on both communication studies and cultural studies,and thus informed the investigations into intercultural communication,an area increasingly concerned in academic research.This paper inc...Semiotics has shed much light on both communication studies and cultural studies,and thus informed the investigations into intercultural communication,an area increasingly concerned in academic research.This paper incorporates our previous semiotic probes into intercultural communication,especially the semiotic model of the intercultural communication process,with the insights that have been recently highlighted in studies of edusemiotics and biosemiotics to further explore the detailed sign-relations embodied in intercultural communication contexts.Based on the conceptualizations of umwelt and semiosis and their interrelation which constitutes an umwelt-semiosis framework,we explore in depth the dynamic process of intercultural communication.Through an analytic of the mutual affection between the communicator’s umwelt as the functional cultural background of the communicators and semiosis as the act of communication,we explain in detail the dynamicity by which communicators’culturally embedded manners of thinking and behaving cannot only affect,but also be affected by the process of intercultural communication.Finally,we indicate that such dynamicity can be consciously manipulated by communicators should we reconceptualize communication following a triadic viewpoint instead of the dualistic one that has dominated sociological studies.展开更多
