They collaborate and complement each other. Images enrich the meaning conveyed by words while words supplement and elucidate the images. Both are indispensable. As a specialized category of comics, popular science comics fully leverage the strengths of both images and words, playing a crucial role in disseminating scientific ideas and knowledge. Therefore, drawing upon theories such as Systemic Functional Linguistics and visual grammar, this paper explores multi-modal narratives in popular science comics. It explicates how words and images work together to construct conceptual, interpersonal, and textual meanings, thereby contributing insights to the development of multi-modal discourse analysis.展开更多
