The present paper makes an introduction to the current situation of researches on the Xiongnu culture(3rdBC to AD3rd centuries) existing in Mongolia.Among the international research institutions participating in Xiong...The present paper makes an introduction to the current situation of researches on the Xiongnu culture(3rdBC to AD3rd centuries) existing in Mongolia.Among the international research institutions participating in Xiongnu archaeological excavations,the Franco-Mongolian Collaborative Archaeological Team drew great attention for its excavation and study of the Gaolemaodu aristocratic graveyard.By analyzing the natural environments,tombs and important funeral objects of the graveyard,the authors try their best to find out the character of the tomb-owners’ status and the continuity developed in steppe tradition,including even the evidence of close relations between the Xiongnu tribes and the Han Empire.The grave goods characteristic of Xiongnu aristocracy can be divided into three groups:bronze mirrors and tokens of authority,coffin ornaments,and horse-and-chariot trappings.Of them the especially notable finds are two different chariots buried in Tomb 20,and the dang lu bridle ornaments and round plaques with a single-horned mythical animal surround by cloud pattern,which have no counterparts among the previous findings.This tomb and other large-sized graves reflect the condition of upper social stratum and the then social organization able to mobilize manpower and material resources for various purposes.展开更多
