A gonadotropin release inhibitory factor (GRIF) has been found in goldfish and common carp. Dopamine (DA) has GRIF activity in goldfish to block spontaneous release of gonadotropin (GtH) and modulate the action of GnRH. Thus, it is suggested that spontaneous ovulation of teleost entails the combination of reduction in GRIF action on the pituitary GtH cells and the stimulation of GtH release by endogenous GnRH.
