Tom Carter, editor of the book, was surprised that so many writers had agreed to contribute. The book contains beautiful and enlightening stories about China. Contributors include Simon Winchester (author of The River at the Center of the World), Peter Hessler (author of River Town), Susan Conley (author of The Foremost Good Fortune), and Alan Paul (author of Big in China). They illustrate the many sides of Chinese life; the weird, the fascinating and the appalling, and they share what it's like to live, learn and love -- as an outsider -- in a land unlike any other. As outsiders, they are able to experience, and find themselves in, outstanding situations. Carter says these privileges, more than anything, define the expat experience in China.展开更多

Does the level of difficulty increase if you are relocating with children, or if you are expecting a child? What joys and challenges do expats encounter as they raise their children in China? With such questions in mind, Women of China English Monthly hosted a readers' meeting in November.展开更多

For example, they must cope with a new language, new environment and new faces. So, they should have an easy time when they return home, right? Notnecessarily so! The transition was not so easy for Eva-Maria Johansson, from Sweden, and Alessandro Fatovic, from Italy. They recently explained to Women of China just how challenging it was when they returned home.展开更多
