Background: The difficulty with histopathology diagnosis is the presence of numerous benign reactive breast lesions with morphological features mimic malignant lesions. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess the merit of morphological patterns of elastic and reticular fibers in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast lesions. Methodology: Fifty biopsies were obtained from females with breast Lesions (25 breast carcinoma and 25 benign lesions), their ages ranging from 17 to 85 years with mean age of 39 years old. Morphologic demonstrations of elastic and reticular fibers were performed using conventional histochemical procedures. Results: Intense grades of elastic fiber staining were achieved with carcinoma tissues. Dwindled grades of elastic fiber staining were detected with fibrocystic changes. Elastic fibers in breast carcinoma are significantly increased compared to benign breast lesions P Conclusion: Histochemical quantifications of elastic and reticular fibers can assist in routine diagnosis of breast lesions. Elastic fibers significantly increase in breast carcinoma compared to benign breast lesions. 展开更多

Background: Continued exposure to sex hormones such as estrogen is a critical risk for subsequent breast cancer. Thus the present study aimed to assess the levels of knowledge towards hormonal related breast cancer risk factors in Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This descriptive study included 737 Saudi volunteers living in the city of Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia. For females, only those agreeing to participate in the breast self-examination workshop were included, and non-respondents were included in the questionnaire. Results: For the question apropos “Inheritance as a risk factor for BC,” 405/607 (66.7%) females signposted certainly “Yes,” as well as, 70/130 (54%) males signposted certainly “Yes.” The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were not statistically significant, but the level of knowledge was relatively higher among females OR (95% CI) = 1.4321 (0.9597 to 2.1370), P = 0.0786. “Are early puberty and late menopause risk factors for breast cancer?” No statistical significant differences were eminent between males and females, OR (95% CI) = 0.8878 (0.5932 to 1.3287), P = 0.5629. Conclusion: Saudi women are enthusiastically willing to raise their knowledge and awareness of breast cancer prevention and control. Although women have greater knowledge about breast cancer risk factors compared to men, still some gaps need to be filled. 展开更多

Background: The incidence of breast cancer is increasing in Saudi Arabia, chiefly in distant provinces with cases assigning advanced stages of the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge towards external exposure related to breast cancer risk factors in Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This descriptive study included 724 Saudi volunteers living in the city of Qurayyat, Northern Saudi Arabia. For females, only those agreeing to participate in the breast self-examination workshop were included and were further investigated for the presence of breast lumps. Results: In comparison of females vs. males, as for the point “Do you know food increases or decreases the risk of BC”, 92 (15%) women stated “Yes (Some prevented BC)” vs. 24 (24%) of the men;78 (12.5%) women stated “Yes (Some caused BC)” vs. 25 (25%) of the men. Referring to the socket “Overweight or obesity increases the risk of BC”, 290 (46.5%) women stated “Yes” vs. 53 (53%) of the men. As for the inquiry “Viruses can increase the risk of BC”, 370 (60%) women stated “Yes” vs. 49 (49%) of the men. Conclusion: There is a lack of breast cancer awareness in Northern Saudi Arabia with the existence of many women with undetected breast lumps. BSE is cost-effective, and it can be implemented in such inaccessible areas. 展开更多

Background: The precise histopathologic diagnosis of a breast lesion is the first step towards the most appropriate inclusive patient’s management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between histochemical patterns of connective tissue fibers and NORs in breast lesions. Methodology: Patients with breast cancer (n = 25) were ascertained as the case group, and those with benign breast lesions were ascertained as a control group (n = 25). Histochemical evaluations of elastic fibers, reticular fibers and mean AgNORs count were performed for all study subjects. Results: Elastic fibers intensity was brought into being lessening in benign lesions and upturns in the direction of malignant lesions. The intensity of elastic fibers was found to intensify with rises of neoplastic changes in breast cancer and this was found to be statistically significant P Conclusion: Demonstration of connective tissue fibers (particularly elastic fibers) can strength the diagnostic evidence for conventional histopathology diagnosis. Mean AgNORs count can merge as an important quantitative marker in breast cancer diagnosis. 展开更多

Objective: The objective of this study was to appraise the epidemiology and patterns of malignant lymphoma in Northern Saudi Arabia. Methodology: A full reportage of data regarding malignant lymphoma was retrieved from the King Khalid Hospital, Hail, Northern Saudi Arabia, comprising records of malignant lymphoma from 2009 to 2016. Results: A review of 120 blood cancers records revealed 47/120 (39.2%) cases of lymphomas, 39 (83%) were Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), 6 (12.8%) were HL and 2 (4.2%) B-cell lymphomas. The overall crude incidence rate CIR) of lymphomas (from 2009 to 2016) was 6.7 per 100,000 persons of the Hail region population. The mean CIR per year was 0.84 per 100,000 persons. Conclusion: The prevalence of malignant lymphoma is relatively higher in northern Saudi Arabia with predominance of NHL amongst elder population. 展开更多
