In this investigation, the effect of time, percentage of copper and nickel on the hardness property of aluminum based powder metallurgy alloys were studied. A full factorial analysis with four levels for each factor was used. The samples were produced using powder metallurgy process, and then subjected to natural aging where heat treatment was conducted for all samples together at 550°C for 3 hours before quenching in water. Then, the samples were left at room temperature for 936 hours (39 days) to allow traces atoms to diffuse and form coherent phases which increase the hardness. It was found that the hardness was firstly increased with time for about 300 hours after the quenching time, and then it tends to remain constant after that. However, the hardness drop at overage stage was not observed until the end of 936 hours. To get a full analysis of the natural aging we used design of experiment tool to study the effect of %Cu, %Ni and aging time on the hardness. The results showed that the hardness was influenced significantly by all considered factors and interactions between them. 展开更多

Different factors play role in aging hardening of aluminum. In this study, the chosen factors were percentages of copper and nickel in aluminum alloys. The specimens were manufactured using casting process, and then heat treatment was carried out for all produced samples together at 550 °C for 3 h before quenching in water. Finally, the specimens were left at room temperature for 936 hours (39days) to allow solute atoms to defuse and form coherent phases to allow the age hardening to take place. The results show that the hardness increased with time in the first 300 hour after the quenching time, and then it remained constant for the rest of the 936 hours. Furthermore, the hardness did not drop until the end of 936 hours which means the over-aging status was not achieved. To get full analysis of the natural aging, design of experiment technique was used to study the effect of %Cu, %Ni and aging time. 展开更多

In this study, corrosion resistance of cast aluminum based alloys and composites reinforced with silicon carbide has been investigated. Different Al-Mg-Cu alloys and Al-4wt.%Mg-Cu/SiC composites reinforced with 5 or 10 vol.%SiC were subjected to corrosive media (acidic: 1.0M HCl and alkaline: 1.0M NaOH) using weight loss method to evaluate their corrosion resistance. The results show that introducing copper and silicon carbide have a negative effect on the corrosion resistance of monolithic aluminum;however, Al-based composites still being attractive materials to replace steel parts in automotive and aircraft industries and hence studying their corrosion resistance is of high importance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS) were used to show the degree of attack and of acidic and alkaline solution on the surface of the investigated materials. 展开更多
