An energetic nano-fiber composite based on polystyrene and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane fabricated via electrospinning technique

Electrospinning is a simple technique used to fabricate polymeric nano-fibrous membranes.These nano-fibers have found a wide range of valuable applications in the biomedical field.However,it has not been utilized with solid high explosives yet.Herein,the electrospinning technique has been used to fabricate polystyrene(PS)/1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane(RDX)composite nanofibers.The governed electrospinning parameters,voltage,distance from the collector,flow rate,mandrel rotating speed,time,and solution concentration,that greatly affect the morphology of the obtained nanofibers were optimized.The fabricated PS/RDX nano-fibers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffractometer(XRD),and Fourier Transform Infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy.The impact and friction sensitivities of PS/RDX were also measured.The thermal behavior of the prepared composite and the pure materials were studied by the thermal gravimetric analysis technique(TGA).SEM results proved the fabrication of PS/RDX fibers in the nano-size via electrospinning.FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the existence of the characteristic functional groups of both PS and RDX in the composite nano-fibers.XRD sharp peaks showed the conversion of amorphous PS into crystalline shape via electrospinning and also confirmed the formation of PS/RDX composite.The PS fibers absorbed the heat and increased the onset decomposition of the pure RDX from 181.5 to 200.7℃in the case of PS/RDX fibers.Interestingly,PS/RDX nano-fibers showed the relatively low impact and friction sensitivities of 100 J and 360 N respectively.These results could introduce PS/RDX nanofibrous composite in the field of explosives detection with high levels of safety. 展开更多

Information about the forty nine nitraminic plastic bonded explosives(PBXs)and different nitramines were collected.Fillers of these PBXs are nitramines 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane(RDX)and β-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5-tetrazocane(β-HMX),cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitro-octahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole(bicyclo-HMX,BCHMX)and e-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane(e-HNIW,CL-20)which are bonded by polyfluoro-elastomers,polydimethyl-siloxane,poly-glycidyl azide,polyisobutylene,polystyrene-butadiene,poly-acrylonitrile-butadiene and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene in addition to a melt cast compositions based on 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.For thirty two of these PBXs the relationships are specified and analyzed between heats of their combustion and relative explosive strengths;by means of these relationships it might be possible to estimate,which groupings in the macromolecule of binder could be liable to their primary fission in the PBXs initiation.Similarly,for forty two of these explosives,the relationships are described and analyzed between their enthalpies of formation and impact sensitivities;here is especially attention paid to PBXs filled by BCHMX.Specific rate constants from Vacuum Stability Test(VST)of four nitramines and twenty PBXs are introduced into relationships with their enthalpies of formation.Regarding to all the mentioned cases,increasing of energy content of the studied explosives leads to increase of the relative explosive strength or initiation reactivity,respectively.Exception with the opposite trend,the outputs of VST are for BCHMX,where in PBXs are matrices with the esteric plasticizers or the energetic poly-glycidyl azide.Admixture of RDX or HMX,respectively,into the BCHX PBXs gives ternary PBXs whose thermal stability,in the sense of applied VST,is higher comparing to the original binary explosives. 展开更多

The effect of underwater shock wave on different target plates has been studied.An underwater shock wave generator(shock tube) was used to study the interactions between water and different constructed targets which act as shock wave mitigation.Target plates,composed of sandwich of two aluminum sheets with rubber and foam in between,were prepared and studied.For comparison,the target plates composed of triple aluminum sheets were tested.The study includes the testing of the selected plates in water under the effect of different peak pressures and the analysis of the results.The strain gauge data and displacement sensors results showed that the multi-layer plates have higher level of underwater shock wave mitigation than the triple aluminum plates with strain and deflection of nearly 50%. 展开更多

Due to the high energetic content of its molecule(deformation of valence angles) it has heat of formation higher than β-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane(β-HMX) by nearly three times. As a result, it has heat of explosion and relative explosive strength exceed that of β-HMX including their corresponding PBXs. However, penetration abilities of PBXs based on HMX are higher than those based on BCHMX. The relatively high initiation reactivity of BCHMX could be modified in a wide range by its incorporation in a suitable polymeric matrices. Regarding to the performance, coating of BCHMX crystals by 5 wt% Viton A produces the maximum performance while the mixture of BCHMX with polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) seems to be the optimum composition for the development of PBX with low sensitivity. 展开更多

This paper studies the shaped charge jet performance in terms of different liner shapes including conical,bell,hemispherical and bi-conical liners.The critical angles and the relevant flow velocities for the zir-conium liner material were calculated analytically and numerically using Autodyn hydro-code.The relationship between the critical collapse angle and the flow velocity was determined for the conditions of jet formation and coherency.Penetration tests according to the standard testing procedures of APL-RP34(Section-I1)were performed to validate the numerical predictions of the jet performance of the studied liners.It was found that the four shaped charge liners all produced coherent jets with different performances.The penetration depth of the shaped charges with the bell and the bi-conical liner shapesincreased by 10.3%and 22%,respectively,while the crater diameter of shaped charge with hemispherical liner increased by 85%representing the formation of an explosively-formed-projectile(EF),when they are compared with the corresponding jet characteristics of a conical liner shaped charge.nanоci 1cu. 展开更多

A well-known ternary plastic explosive,Czech Semtex 1H,contains a mixture of PETN and RDX softened by SBR.In this work,BCHMX was used to replace PETN in Semtex 1H to form Sem-BC+RDX.In addition,another mixture based on BCHMX and HMX as energetic fillers bonded by the polymeric matrix of Semtex 1H(Sem-BC+HMX)was studied.The particle size distribution of each individual explosive was determined to obtain the optimum mixing conditions.Friction and impact sensitivities were determined.The velocity of detonation was reported practically and the detonation properties were calculated by EXPLO5 code.The explosive strength of each sample was measured by the ballistic mortar test.The conclusion confirms that the velocity of detonation of Sem-BC+HMX was the highest in comparison with the prepared samples.Sem-BC+RDX has the least impact and frictions sensitivities.Sem-BC+RDX has higher detonation velocity,detonation properties and explosive strength than Semtex 1H.Addition of BCHMX in Semtex 1H as a replacement for PETN is the candidate to produce a high performance advanced Czech plastic explosive. 展开更多

Different GAP-based CSRP samples with different binder contents were prepared and compared with that of conventional HTPB propellant.The crosslinker mixture of trimethylol propane(TMP)and butane diol(BD)was used in the GAP matrix beside the addition of dibutyltin dilaurate(DBTDL)to ensure cross-linking and curing completion of the prepared CSRP.The viscosity and hardness of all prepared formulations were monitored continuously during the curing process.The mechanical characteristics of cured samples were tested.The burning rate at operating pressure and specific impulse were measured,while the theoretical specific impulse(I sp)was calculated by ICT code and compared with the measured results.According to the results,DOA was found to be a suitable plasticizer for GAP when using in propellant.The mechanical properties of CSRP with 25%GAP can produce the optimum mechanical behavior,which is close to that of HTPB-based CSRP.The optimum GAP-based formulation is one candidate to replace the traditional HTPB-based CSRP with high burning rate for some applications. 展开更多

The formula for the analytical calculations of the shaped charge jetting parameters exhibit an explicit dependence upon the Gurney velocity of an explosive material.Many attempts have been done to approximate the characteristic constant 2E^(1/2) and to make its use more efficient.It is shown herein that the characteristic Gurney velocity parameter depends on the ratio of the Chapman Jouguet-pressure to explosive impulse ratio by the formula:2E^(1/2)=0.2415(P_(CJ)/I_(SP)ρ_0)-970.76,where PCJis the Chapman Jouguet pressure(Pa),ISPis the specific impulse of the explosive used as a monopropellant(N·s/kg)andρois the explosive density(kg/m^3).The proposed empirical formula was found to be reasonable and quite accurate approximation that can be implemented over a wide range of explosives,where the maximum deviation between the measured and the calculated Gurney velocities was nearly 6%.Besides,the proposed approach has been used analytically to calculate the jet tip velocity of a small caliber shaped charge,which is measured experimentally.The difference between the measured and the calculated jet tip velocity was only 1.6%. 展开更多

Vacuum Stability Test(VST)was used to determine the thermal behavior and kinetic parameters of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine(HMX)and its mixture with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene(HTPB)as a binder coded as HMX/HTPB.Model fitting and isoconversional method were applied to determine the kinetic parameters based on VST results.For comparison,non-isothermal thermogravimetry analysis data(TGA)was also used to calculate the kinetic parameters by using Kissinger,OFW(Ozawa,Flynn,and Wall)and KAS(Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose)methods.Advanced Kinetics and Technology Solution(AKTS)software was also used to determine the decomposition kinetics of the studied samples.Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC)was employed to determine the decomposition heat flow properties of the studied samples.Results show that the activation energies obtained using VST results is 360.1kJ/mol for pure HMX and 186.9kJ/mol for HMX/HTPB.The activation energies obtained by the three different methods using TGA results are in the range of 360-368kJ/mol for pure HMX and 190-206kJ/mol for HMX/HTPB.It is concluded that values of kinetic parameters obtained by VST are close to that obtained by the different techniques using TG/DTG results.The onset decomposition peak of HMX/HTPB is lower than that of HMX where the HTPB binder has negative effect on the thermal stability of HMX.The results of all the applied techniques prove that HMX/HTPB has lower activation energy and heat release than the pure HMX.HTPB polymeric matrix has negative effect on the kinetic parameters of HMX. 展开更多

cis-1,3,4,6-Tetranitrooctahydroimidazo-[4,5 d]imidazole(BCHMX)is an advanced energetic compound that expected to spread worldwide in the near future.Since,no approved remote detection methods were reported in current ... cis-1,3,4,6-Tetranitrooctahydroimidazo-[4,5 d]imidazole(BCHMX)is an advanced energetic compound that expected to spread worldwide in the near future.Since,no approved remote detection methods were reported in current literature for this material,we performed hyper-spectral imaging and laser induced fluorescence(LIF)to a BCHMX sample under low laser fluence for determining the optimum laser wavelength used in any future BCHMX-LIF based remote detection systems.For this purpose,an experimental setup consisted of a sun spectrum lamp and hyper-spectral camera was built to illuminate and image white powder samples of BCHMX in comparison with the traditional explosives,HMX(1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane),RDX(1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane),PETN(2,2-Bis[(nitroxy)methyl]propane-1,3-diyldinitrate).The imaging reveals strong BCHMX sample absorption contrast among other samples at wavelength ranging from 400 to 410 nm.When light source was replaced by a 405 nm laser diode illuminator,a strong BCHMX sample LIF at the spectral range from 425 to 700 nm was observed under low laser fluence condition of 0.1 mJ/cm^(2).Finally,we demonstrated successfully the ability of the 405 nm LIF and the hyperspectral imaging technique to detect finger print traces of BCHMX on white cellulose fabric from a distance of 15 m and a detection limit of 1 mg/cm^(2). 展开更多
