At present, heat tolerance research remains one of the least understood fields in wheat genetics and breeding and there is a lack of effective methods to quantify heat stress and heat tolerance in different wheat cultivars. The objective of this study was to use various wheat cultivars to evaluate stress intensity(δ) and a new method for quantification of heat tolerance and compare this technique with three other currently utilized methods. This new parameter for heat tolerance quantification is referred to as the heat tolerance index(HTI) and is an indicator of both yield potential and yield stability. Heat treatments were applied in a controlled setting when anthesis had been reached for 80% of the wheat. The stress intensity evaluation indicated heat shock was the main factor associated with kernel weight reduction while grain yield reduction was mainly associated with chronic high temperature. The methods evaluation showed that a temperature difference of 5°C from natural temperatures was a suitable heat treatment to compare to the untreated controls. HTI was positively correlated with yield under heat stress(r=0.8657, δ=0.15, in 2009–2010; r=0.8418, δ=0.20, in 2010–2011; P<0.01), and negatively correlated with yield reduction rate(r=–0.8344, in 2009–2010; r=–0.7158, in 2010–2011; P<0.01). The results of this study validated the use of HTI and temperature difference control for quantifying wheat heat tolerance that included the yield potential and the stability of different wheat cultivars under heat stress. Additionally, 10 wheat cultivars showed high HTI and should be further tested for their heat confirming characteristics for use in wheat heat tolerance breeding.展开更多

In thermodynamic calculation, starting decomposition temperatures of reactions were calculated, and saturated vapor pressures of Mo, S and Mo S2 were also analyzed. In AIMD, geometries of the Sn(n≤8), Mom(m≤8) and MomSn(m+n≤8) clusters have been optimized using density functional theory(DFT) with generalized gradient approximation(GGA). And these clusters were simulated in DFT with Cambridge Sequential Total Energy Package(CASTEP) code of Material Studio software. Structures and stabilities of these clusters before and after molecular dynamics simulations were discussed, and diffusion coefficients were also calculated. In vacuum decomposition experiments, relationship between heat preservation time and volatilization rate of Mo and S was obtained, while the constant temperature and chamber pressure were 1823 K and 5–35 Pa, respectively. The geometric and electronic properties of five BDT-M2+complexes(M = Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Co) have been investigated using density functional theory(DFT) at the B3 LYP/6-311 G(d,p) level with the GAUSSIAN 09 package program. The results show that BDT ligand exhibits alternative behaviors to different metal ions with the binding affinity in the order of Cu2+> Cd2+> Pb2+> Hg2+> Co2+. After adding the BDT-M2+complex into the GSH solution, the new S–S bonds can be formed, resulting with benzimidazole-metal ions(MBI-M2+) falling off into the GSH solution. Furthermore, the weak interaction between the new glutathione derivative(GSHD) and MBI-M2+were found. However, the strong chelation was detected between GSHD and MBI-M2+(M = Cu, Pb, Hg, Co) to hinder the adsorbed Cu2+, Pb2+and Hg2+, Co2+completely falling into the GSH solution, which suggests porous silicon composite modified by BDT has a certain selective pre-enrichment of Cd2+ion.展开更多

Meth...Objective: To analyze the effect of Chinese medicine (CM) on mortality and quality of life (QOL) of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients treated with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). Methods: A random sample of AIDS patients enrolled in the National Chinese Medicine Treatment Trial Program (NCMTP) that met the inclusion criteria was included in this study. NCMTP patients were included as the CM+cART group, and those not in the NCMTP were included as the cART group. Survival from September 2004 to September 2012 was analyzed by retrospective cohort study. QOL was analyzed by cross-sectional study. Results: The retrospective cohort study included 528 AIDS patients, 322 in the CM+cART group and 206 in the cART group. After 8 years, the mortality in the CM+cART group was 3.3/100 person-years, which was lower than the cART group of 5.3/100 person-years (P〈0.05). The hazard ratio (HR) for mortality in the cART group was 1.6 times that of the CM+cART group by Cox proportional hazard model analysis. After controlling for gender, age, marital status, education, and CD4+ T-cell count, the HR was 1.9 times higher in the cART group compared with the CM+cART group (P〈0.05). The cross-sectional study investigated 275 AIDS patients. The mean scores of all QOL domains except spirituality/personal beliefs were higher in the CM+cART group than in the cART group (P〈0.05). Conclusions: For AIDS patients, CM could help to prolong life, decrease mortality, and improve QOL. However, there were limitations in the study, so prospective studies should be carded out to confirm our primary results.展开更多
