Numerous efforts have been made to develop tissue-engineered grafts or patches to repair focal chondral and osteochondral defects, and to date several researchers aim to implement clinical application of cell-based therapies for cartilage repair. A literature review was conducted on PubM ed, Scopus and Google Scholar using appropriate keywords, examining the current literature on the wellknown tissue engineering methods for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis.展开更多

Only patients with PD who were stable for at least 6-12 months prior to surgery were enrolled in this study. Preoperative assessment included a dynamic echo colour Doppler ultrasound scan to evaluate the degree of penile deformity and the peak systolic velocity in the cavernosal arteries and an assessment of erectile function with the administration of the International Index of Erectile Function 5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire. Stretched penile length was recorded pre- and postoperatively. Surgical complications, cosmesis and sexual function, patient satisfaction and postoperative erectile function were assessed postoperatively at 3 months, I year and 2 years, respectively. After a median follow-up period of 20 months (range: 12-24 months), we found that mild residual curvature (12%) and glans hypoesthesia (3%) were the only causes of partial dissatisfaction. No rejection of the graft was observed. All patients recovered their ability to penetrate with no difficulty. In addition, an intraoperative average increase of 2.5 cm (range: 1.7-4.1 cm) in stretched penile length was recorded, with all patients engaging in penetrative sexual intercourse. In conclusion, this procedure represents a safe and reproducible technique for the correction of penile curvature resulting from PD and yields excellent cosmetic and functional results.展开更多

Sixteen Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing between 120 and 200 gwere used in the present study. Tooth movement was induced by placing elastic bands between the maxillary first and second molars. The elastic bands were left in place for 12 (time T1) and 24 (time T2) hours. After rats’ euthanasia, maxillae were dissected free and the sections were exposed to a primary rabbit polyclonal anti-TRAIL anti-body. The staining status was identified as either negative or positive by using 3,3’-diaminobenzidine (DAB) to develop the immunoreaction. Data were analyzed using ANOVA test and a post-hoc Dunn’s Multiple Comparison test. P-values of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. The staining for TRAIL in the tension side appeared darker (intensity of staining = 2) than in the compressive side (intensity of staining = 1) 12 h after the tooth movement. The stainings of both sides of PDL were observed to be up-regulated 24 h after the application of the force (tension side = 3, compression side = 2;P 0.05). TRAIL is expressed in the periodontal ligament of rats’ molars during experimental tooth movement both in the compression and in the tension sides. The latter showed the highest amount of TRAIL immunolabeling.展开更多

Despite intense research efforts involving a variety of biological materials, such as skin, muscle aponeurosis, human dura mater, tunica vaginalis, and pericardium, engineered tunica albuginea suitable for graft use is yet to be obtained. The study investigates microsurgical tunica albuginea allotransplantation in an animal model with the purpose of creation of an organ-specific tissue bank to store penile tissue, from cadaveric donors and male-to-female trans-sexual surgery, for allogeneic transplantation. Materials were tunica albuginea tissue explanted from 15 donor rats, cryopreserved at -80~C, gamma-irradiated, and implanted in 15 recipient rats, of which three rats were used as controls. Penile grafts were explanted at different time intervals; after macroscopic evaluation of the organ, the grafts were processed to morphological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical examinations by light microscopy. Detection of pro-inflammatory cytokines was also performed. Examination of the tunica albuginea allografts collected 1, 3, or 6 months after surgery and of control tunica albuginea fragments showed that tunica albuginea implants achieved biointegration with adjacent tissue at all-time points. The integration of cryopreserved rat tunica albuginea allografts, documented by our study, encourages the exploration of tunica albuginea allotransplantation in humans. In conclusion, the effectiveness and reliability of the tunica albuginea conditioning protocol described here suggest the feasibility of setting up a tunica albuginea bank as a further tissue bank.展开更多
