Objective: To evaluate the reliability and accuracy of frozen section (FS) compared with final pathology and to determine whether they should be obligatory in every patient with atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH)....Objective: To evaluate the reliability and accuracy of frozen section (FS) compared with final pathology and to determine whether they should be obligatory in every patient with atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH). Methods: We retrospectively assessed the medical records of 192 patients whose endometrial biopsy results were endometrial hyperplasia and underwent hysterectomy at our center. Results: Twenty-two (11.4%) of the 192 patients in our study had concurrent endometrial carcinoma (EC). Of these, 21 (95.5%) were EC and 1 (4.5%) was non-endome- trioid. Of the 140 patients with AEH, 20 (14.3%) had concurrent EC. Overall, 157 patients had FS. Two (1%) patients’ EC was higher than grade 1B and needed lymphadenectomy. The positive and negative predictive value, specifity and sensitivity of FS were found to be 77.8%, 95.7%, 97% and 70%, respectively. Conclusion: Patients who have AEH without high-risk comorbidities do not have to be referred to oncology centers and can undergo hysterectomy in community hospitals without FS.展开更多

There is a wide clinical spectrum of presentation and behaviour ranging from a benign condition to an aggressive disease with a fatal outcome. We report a case of placental site trophoblastic tumor in 23-year-old women with irregular vaginal bleeding during postpartum lactation period. In addition to persistent low level β-hCG titers, ultrasound examination revealed a suspicious low-echoic area in the myometrium consistent with gestational trophoblastic disease. After histopathological examination of the specimen achieved by ultrasound-guided dilatation and curettage of the uterus, the placental site trophoblastic tumor diagnosis was made and subsequently total abdominal hysterectomy was performed. The patient had an uneventful recovery, and no recurrence was detected for 40 months in the follow-up period.展开更多

We report a case of adenomatoid tumor of the uterus that was found incidentally during treatment of cervical adenocarcinoma. Although adenomatoid tumors may cause a differential diagnostic problem, in our case the hematoxylin-eosin histological and immunhistochemical studies confirmed mesothelial phenotype of tumor and these also helped in differentiating an adenomatoid tumor from the carcinomatous myometrial invasion. Adenomatoid tumors are easily recognizable benign pathologies. An incidental finding of adenomatoid tumors accompanied by adenocarcinoma of the endometrium or cervix should always be considered.展开更多
