Noodle-like mesoporous silica with a diameter of about 180 nm and a length of ca. 10 靘 was prepared through sol-gel process by using poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/ cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) complex as template. Parallel oriented regular mesopores with a diameter of around 24 nm are distributed along the wall of the particles, while the 搘orm-like?disordered mesopores can be found in the fringe part. This approach provides a new series of templates and a novel route to prepare inorganic mesoporous materials with special morphology. 展开更多

Comparison of zinc complexation properties of dissolved organic matter from surface waters and wastewater treatment plant effluents

Unlike natural organic matter(NOM), wastewater organic matter(WWOM) from wastewater treatment plant effluents has not been extensively studied with respect to complexation reactions with heavy metals such as copper or zinc. In this study, organic matter from surface waters and a wastewater treatment plant effluent were concentrated by reverse osmosis(RO) method. The samples were treated in the laboratory to remove trace metals and major cations. The zinc complexing properties of both NOM and the WWOM were studied by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry(SWASV). Experimental data were compared to predictions using the Windermere Humic Aqueous Model(WHAM) Version VI. We found that the zinc binding of WWOM was much stronger than that of NOM and not well predicted by WHAM. This suggests that in natural water bodies that receive wastewater treatment plant effluents the ratio of WWOM to NOM must be taken into account in order to accurately predict free zinc activities. 展开更多

Thickness and stability of films formed by different surfactants are studied by means of thin film balance (TFB) technique to observe the formation and stability of the films. It is demonstrated that stable Newton black films (NBFs) can be easily obtained with non-ionic surfactants (C12E5, C12G2) than ionic surfactants (C12TAB, C16TAB). Common black film (CBF) was obtained with C16TAB at 5×10-3 mol/L, while the film of C12TAB is unstable. It has been demonstrated that the horizontal forces should also be taken into consideration for explaining film stability. 展开更多
